Perfect to raise a family - 6/10/2022

Recently moved here from Texas and we’re loving it so far. It reminds us of old Georgetown, Tx, where we grew up. We love small, close knit towns and McAlester is just that. Great place to raise a family! I’m sure the natives would disagree but that’s true for any town/city. ??

Cost of Living & Populastion - 9/24/2009

Having lived in McAlester in the early 50's, I find it interesting that the population of the City of McAlester is about the same as it was suring the 50's and the population in the Metro areasaround 44,000. I would like to know what the Metro area includes. And the cost of living being 27.85 % lower than the U.S. average seems somewhat lower than I would have guessed. I assume this is in part due to lack on industry in that area. And the average cost of homes indicates the same. I justthought this was interesting, thanks.

Living in McAlester - 7/31/2007

My family moved here last year when my husband got a job with an oil technology firm. The housing market is great here. You can find a nice house for an affordable price. The town itself is littered with Craftsman style homes that many people are buying and renovating. It's a Craftsman lovers dream! The people are friendly and caring and you feel safe here. We are in the foothills of the Ozark mountains so there are beautiful views all around. The only thing really lacking in this town is a good selection of stores to shop in, esp.grocery stores, and restaurants. There are some fast food names you'd recognize here but no national chains of restaurants (like Applebees, Chili's, Outback, etc). There is a Starbucks that is about to open so I guess we're headed up in the world now. LOL! Overall, I love living in McAlester. It's a growing city that is retaining it's small town atmosphere.
