Michigan: trash tier state - 9/8/2021

Ready to throw in the towel with this state. I would recommend looking elsewhere to move, if that’s what brings you to this forum. Frankly that’s what I am in the process of doing. I’ve spent my whole life here—if life in Michigan is as good as it gets, then God must be playing a rude joke on us. To start off, as recent graduate, I had to hustle pretty hard to get a job paying a living wage. How hard does it have to be? As far as economic opportunity, this state is the pits. If you find a job paying enough to cover your rent, its because you’re probably working for someone evil. My father spent his whole life jumping from job to job because of layoffs. I never felt secure and our family internalized that sense of economic instability. Housing is not California expensive, but it is NOT affordable. We have miles and miles of boring suburbs, devastated inner cities, boojy McMansion towns, and rural no mans lands. Our so called affordable housing is uninhabitable. Look into what it’s like living in Flint or Detroit. Our state has failed them badly. We have a tremendous amount of segregation in Wayne County alone. To be frank, it is a region with f*cked energy. Moreover, I have to disagree with the pablum about our four lovely seasons. There are 2-3 seasons and winter is about 5 months long. Fall can be nice. However, it is normal for humidity to be in the 50s-90s year round. Whenever I leave the state, I feel less sweaty and don’t have daily sinus headaches. Be prepared to feel suffocated if you want to live here. Detroit is cool—if you’re into music it’s the place to be. Great venues and it’s a city with a real vibe. However it is also the place where business and govt fails it’s residents with inhumanity and impunity. Maybe you heard about our state government diverting funding to Detroit public schools, in order to subsidize the billionaire Illich family’s business ventures. Don’t fall for the comeback stuff too much either, the residents of Detroit have been struggling and stressed by exploitation for decades. Nothing ever got better out here, and it probably never will. We have lots of coastline, and a gorgeous natural setting in our UP, but for many people never enough money to get there and enjoy it. Frankly, if you’re okay with having no economic opportunity your whole life, you might as well do it somewhere where the weather is more comfortable, like Texas or California .

Can’t wait to leave - 9/3/2020

Michigan is so overrated; Michiganders are in love with this state, and I don’t get it. You can sit and have a two hour conversation about how crappy things are here and they’ll agree, but there’s nothing you could say to make them dislike this state; what are they holding onto? -It’s so boring. There’s nothing to do unless you have land or water access, or you like winter sports. Not even entertainers like to come here. - The winters are BRUTAL and they never end. For like 8 months out of the year, it’s just miserable, gray, depressing, cold and wet. It’s hell on your home and car. - The infrastructure has to be among the worst in the country. There’s no easy way to get anywhere, you’re sometimes going 20-30 extra miles out of the way to get from A to B. The roads look like they’re in a 3rd world. I don’t even know how many my tires have been claimed by potholes. There’s always construction repairing things that don’t need repairing, while neglecting real issues. - The state and local governments are infamously corrupt and incompetent. Bunch of snooty democrats, wasting all of the tax dollars, making reckless decisions that ruin cities like Detroit and Flint. Remember Kwame Kilpatrick? Or look at Whitmer right now, putting COVID restrictions on everything so all businesses are failing and no one is employed, over a virus that a 113 year old woman just survived. So fiscally irresponsible. - Michigan is the meth capital of the world. - Michigan has two of the country’s top murder capitals. - Theres not a whole lot of business opportunities. - Housing is ridiculous. You’ll pay upwards of $300,000 for a house that’s 70 years old, with foundation issues, mold, trees ripping through pipes, etc. For what?? In this crappy state? No thanks. You can pay the same amount in, say, Texas and get a brand new and bigger house. - People here are just generally *******s. - Taxes are high and it all gets wasted. - Insurance is INSANE, and there’s all kinds of high tertiary fees so you’re always just hemorrhaging money.

small town - 4/9/2017

Belleville MI is a small town, they have a couple good fast food places and a few small diners and such, but the cost of living is kind of ridiculous. i have a one bedroom apartment, on the lake mind you, for 900$ a month. the town is kind of boring and its mainly just old folks here, which theres nothing wrong with that, unless youre a young adult like me, looking for excitement. i suggest moving else where. although! it is close to ann arbor and such places, so thats a small plus.

Lived here my entire life...ready to move - 6/10/2016

Ok, so I've lived in Suburbs of Michigan my entire life. Let me start with the good: -Lots of lakes big and small -Good employment opportunities in the larger metro areas -Lots of metro parks Let me list the not so good: -Highest auto insurance rates in the country -High license fees -Very aggressive and rude drivers -Roads in either A) bad condition or B) under construction -Traffic bad in Metro Detroit (Southeast Michigan) -Very short summers (if you like any kind of outdoor activities) -Very long winters (If you live in Upper Peninsula, even longer with more snow) -Driving in winter weather, along with lots of stupid drivers, can be very treacherous -Unions (auto and teachers) have huge lobby in Lansing (state capital) -Lots of fees and taxes Summary: Michigan is like California, nice place maybe to vacation, but not to live. I will be moving out of Michigan within the next year...

employers are the worse - 6/10/2015

Grew up in michigan and moved back here 10 years ago. Worse decision we ever made. Employers in northern michigan pay poorly and treat employees like animals. Cost of living up here is expensive and most people have to work 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet. Beautiful state and lots to do all year if you like the outdoors. Wages are bad the local saying is "view of the bay is worth half the pay." Sad isn't it.

Michigan is a great place to live. You will experience all 4 seasons and have an opportunity to enjoy the great attractions. One of the best main places to experience culture and night life is Downtown Detroit. The festivals are amazing; I love the various cultures, cuisine, River Walk, and convenient access to Canada.

Micigan Sucks - 2/11/2015

I hate it here. I HATE IT. Ypsi, Detroit, ann arbor, Dearborn, inkster, Belleville Washtenaw county, wayne county lansing I lived there or visited. And I have family here. The old newspaper articles are a witness to crime in various cities that cops do not notice or how about the many bikers with liquor bottles, drugs that book bags just do not trick you to believe they are students. You will see crime happen and the police do to and ...ya both watch. Or how about police cars parked at the back of drug dealers homes. Unfortunately it is the only reason that I stayed. I did miss out on my life. There are all mental ill released patients, developmentally disturbed, allot of students and LOADS AND LOADS OF EXCONVICTS and CRIMINALs. The drug dealers enlarge their sales to the suburbs clientele with no problem of projecting new areas and larger sales of crack and heroin. The people are so mean IT IS DYSFUNCTIONAL AND CORRUPT...the police and judicial system too and I work for the judicial system. The Bisexuals, gays and lesbians love it here. It s a dark hell here in Michigan. I have stayed because I am income dependent like I make allot of money and of my family BUT I HATE IT HERE. The homosexuals are aggressive and the men well Men in Detroit are known for putting their dates in porn without their knowledge or consent. They are also known to bring you a old packed bologna sandwich for a date and that's if they have enough decency to have a date or know how and what the word date means with all the woman giving it away alone or with their gf to the man. The woman are known to ride around with their nude bottoms or tops out the car on beautiful fall argumentative days. Did I say I hate it here?

Michigan - 11/18/2014

Michigan is a wonderful place to live if you love the four seasons and all the activities and festivities that come along with those seasons. It's a state for nature lover's where you may enjoy Camping, Hicking, Fishing, Canoeing, Kayakers, and even Skiing, Snowboarding and Ice Skating just to name a few. There's so much to explore with all the beautiful Crystal Lakes. In fact there are many Michiganders who have never seen the wonderous beauty of Michigan themselves. Want to know more about Michigan. Can't Wait To Retire, I'm OUT of Here - 5/25/2014

I am not a good reviewer of Michigan (Flint area). I hate it here. I hate the cold, the long winters, the icy roads, and I hate the muggy summers. I am retiring as soon as I can and leaving.

Huron-Clinton Metroparks - 3/15/2014

Metroparks in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area are the best. There are winter and summer activities all the time. There is golf, disc golf, bicycle paths, kayaking on the Huron River, picnicking, hiking, and cross country skiiing. Anything you can do outdoors in nature is there. They have fun educational outdoor activities for the whole family.

Michigan is a wonderful state for the outdoors. The beaches are amazing. The rivers and lakes are excellent for weekend trips and camping/canoe/kayaking/hunting/fishing. I have spent 30 yrs hear and if it weren't for the cold winters, I wouldn't think of leaving. If you love the outdoors, this is a great place to be.
