#LoveMyPuyallup - 8/2/2022

I moved here from FL a year and a half ago and I love Puyallup. The only other review was from someone who clearly wishes they were still in Colorado. It also seems they were unfairly rating Puyallup based on South Hill. Puyallup is a wonderful community. There is a thriving downtown with local shops and tons of great NON-chain restaurants. I wake up every morning to bird song outside my window and there are parks everywhere. The Puyallup Main Street Association hosts multiple fun family events throughout the year. The weekly Farmer’s Market right downtown at Pioneer Park is a prime example and shouldn’t be missed. #LoveMyPuyallup

Not what I expected- It could be worse I guess... - 12/10/2018

I just moved here from Colorado due to my job and it's definitely not what I had hoped for. It doesn't seem like a completely horrible place to live like Tacoma or other big cities, but it has been a culture shock for me. I'm used to wide open spaces, challenging mountain trails, abundant wildlife, clean air, organic food, book stores, and locally owned businesses. Puyallup really doesn't offer anything like that. The only restaurants I'm finding are chain restaurants and fast food restaurants so I just make everything by scratch. There are a couple of local ones, but you have to really search. I also can't find organic hand made artisan bread anywhere. The bakeries only serve cupcakes and the bread I do find still has a few preservatives thrown in. The closest grocery store that offers organic selections are in Olympia and Tacoma. People also don't really seem to take care of their health here nor do they exercise. Besides food options, if you like to physical activity such as hiking and backpacking, this is not the place for you. The only trail that I found besides the trails at Mt. Rainier are only 5 miles long and it's not challenging. There are sewer drains, trash, and hobos in the parks/trails and I do not feel safe. You have to drive at least an hour to find anything mediocre. The overall atmosphere feels depressing and dangerous to me. I refuse to walk outside alone. On most nights, we have at least a few cop cars fly past our residence or someone screaming down the road. There is no wildlife and I don't have birds visit my feeder anymore. All I hear is the constant roar of traffic and engines. If you open the windows you just smell exhaust. Also the traffic is horrendous and it will take you forever to go anywhere. Also, there is trash and litter everywhere. I've never seen anything like it. It lines the highways and I'm constantly picking up trash that I see in parks when I do go. I don't know why others don't seem to notice. I guess they're just used to it and don't know how different it is in other places. It's not the classiest of places. My husband and I make it a point to leave this place every weekend and spend it elsewhere. We're both counting down the days until we are able to leave and never look back. The only plus to Puyallup is it's location to everything else. Otherwise, if I could leave now I would.

Puyallup, WA - 12/26/2014

Lived in the south Puget Sound area all my life and wouldn't live any where else. I've been to other states but this is it! Love being so close to the mountains, ocean and lakes. It rains a little but there are no tornadoes, earthquakes, and winters are mild with the right amount of snow (very little). Spring and summer time are absolutely beautiful!

Public transportation - 3/27/2010

Most people who live here commute the 35 miles to Seattle in order to get decent paying jobs. The Sounder train has a stop right here in Puyallup and its runs are increasing as commuters turn to it more and more. It's a very comfortable ride and only takes about 45 minutes to get to Seattle. In the past, taking the bus south to Tacoma and then over to Puyallup has taken as long as 2 hours and a few times as long as 4 (with accidents slowing things down). People not familiar with our area should be aware that Western Washington is a commuter area. The majority of jobs are in Seattle, Bellevue and Tacoma. Many people don't want to live in the city or can't afford to, so they live quite a distance away and commute. Many choose Puyallup because of its relative nearness to Seattle, but it's still just outside of the expensive King County tax area.

Moving to Washington from Chicago - 10/3/2008

Getting discouraged, But I still want to move to Washington State? I am a African American female with 4 kids (aging from 16 female, 11 female, 9 male, 7 female) and I have a husband. I have section 8 and ready to relocate to Washington from Chicago in April of 2009. What is making discourage is finding a nice area with good to excellent schools. I haven't been to Washington in about 17 years so I was not there long to enough to get to know the State. But my friend is there and she is suggesting that I live in nice area that she think is nice but being on different sites I am finding that it really not so nice. I don't want to relocate to put my kids in crappy school or to live in unsafe neighborhoods if that's the case I might as well stay in Illinois. But what cities are Black and white (that have mix race) friendly and not prejudice also with good paying jobs. Not mention safety for me and my children. My husband does have skills like grave digging and rehabbing houses and I am a C.N.A until I am done with school but we want a new start before I am done because it is hard out here in Illinois and I know I can stay and remain focus somewhere else. I have a friend that is there and she also mention that Washington have a lot of prejudice and shady folks.Basically in certain areas you can not have nice things because people would think you think you are all that and would try to take your stuff I want to stay away from those areas. But what areas to live in for families with section 8, African American, low crime rates. Also, because I am on section 8 that don't mean I want live in the dumps.

Too many grey days - 10/17/2007

From fall to spring the weather here is a real downer. I call it prozac grey. When the sun shines everyone wants to skip work or school and roll around in it. I love the green grass, the rivers, lakes, puget sound and the snow capped mountains. I just hate all the grey.

Quality of life - 7/3/2007

The quality of life here in South Pugent Sound though a little expensive is very good. There are many things to do and see and the weather contrary to popular belief is really rather pleasant.

Traffic Sucks - 5/13/2006

Nice town. Growing like crazy. Traffic sucks because roads were not built for this much traffic. Too many Seattlites moving down and raising the house prices.
