Student per Teacher Ratio - 5/23/2015

As of the last few years, with education spending cuts, our student to teacher ratio is now somewhere near 31-32 students per classroom. The only exception is our special education students, Malcolm High School(which is an alternative high school) and classrooms that have a para-pro helping out with special education students who are in the mainstream classrooms. A para-pro is not a teacher, has no degree in teaching and only works part-time.

Weather - 2/19/2011

It is cold up here! I am bummed there isn't more to do inside with little ones when it is so cold for months.

If you enjoy Winter and cool Summers, you may enjoy living here. Snowfall usually begins in December and lasts until late April. The last few years Winter weather has started in October. My biggest weather complaint is the lack of sunshine. There are lots of heavy overcast days here. It is called "Lake Effect" and comes from being close to Lake Superior. The area has state forests that are great for hiking and camping Summers and snowmobiling in the Winter. There are groomed cross country ski trails in the area, and down hill skiing within a reasonable driving distance. There is year round fishing. Lake State University consistently has a great hockey team! There are ice skating rinks in the area and lessons for youngsters interested in playing hockey.

good small town - 12/12/2006

Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie (Soo). Never felt scared to walk down a street after dark. As a child most people still left their doors unlocked, car windows down, most could happen was a local drunk went into the wrong house! Things alittle different now, but still a good place to raise a family. I moved away from the Soo a few years ago. Not enough work, and people know everything about you. So here I am in a huge metro city. Yep good jobs great pay, compaired to the Soo but the cost of living is crazy. A couple could still buy a home in the Soo for a nice price. Ends up the big city sucks. The reasons one leaves the Soo is the same reason one ends up missing it, totally crazy! No place like the u.p. and once a yooper always a yooper! So if you got a good paying job that you can work year round the Soo is great!
