Has potential but does not live up to it. - 4/26/2023

Lived here all of my life. I've visited enough cities to understand that Spokane could be so much better, but it falls short in many ways. Its car-oriented development has really ruined the city in my opinion. Everyone complains about the road quality here, but it lacks for several reasons, which I will describe later. There are five and six car lane roads in DOWNTOWN, the most "pedestrian friendly" area of the city. There are hardly any useful bike lanes here. 99% of bike lanes here are unprotected, narrow, and make no sense. There's one out by the airport, which is only accessible by highway and starts like four miles after the highway exit. Most bike lanes are really just lanes shared with cars, and they just have a bicycle symbol painted on them on the pavement. Public transit has been so neglected and the public opinion on it here is so awful that small upgrades are seen as huge milestones. We don't even have dedicated bus lanes anywhere in the city yet. Suffice to say, you'll rely on your car, heavily, and between gas, insurance, and parking, you'll be spending a lot of money on your car if you want to do stuff around here. There is a lot of cool stuff to do, and the food scene has gotten significantly better within the last five years. Good pizza used to be Pizza Hut, now it has to be scratch-made dough and woodfired if that business wants to make money. The coffee scene around here is better than every city I've visited, even Seattle. If you work downtown, you have an option on nearly every block. There are even great coffee shops in the suburbs. There are also plenty of activities, ranging from paintball, go-karting, golf, and the parks. But again, many of these are car-oriented so if you can't afford one or don't want to own one for moral reasons, or you simply live in an apartment that doesn't offer parking, you are only going to be able to do food/drink. Extending on that, this is an outdoorsman's paradise. Plenty of skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking, dirt biking, camping, all within day-trip distance. We also get a large contrast in weather, ranging from single digit temps and a couple feet of snow, to heat so blistering that you want to move to the Tundra to escape it. We even had "90 days over 90" one summer. So let me explain why Spokane's car-oriented development is so harmful to the city, and why it's much worse than other cities, even San Diego. About 30% of downtown's land is just surface parking, and it's only 60% capacity during peak times (according to a city survey and KXLY news article). This poor land use is why Spokane was one of the most overvalued housing markets for a few years when the housing market exploded. Downtown can feel so lifeless in some areas. Many residents also feel unsafe because these parking lots give spots for homeless to hang around. Although the homeless problem here is bad, they haven't been too problematic in my experience compared to other cities, and most of the population here used to be normal residents until they got priced out during the housing crisis. I regularly park my car on the street downtown and have never had a break-in. The excessive car-oriented development has also led to increased traffic. By adding more lanes, we've essentially induced demand, and travel times got worse, like it always does. Not only that, there are so many roads around here that keeping up with maintenance is impossible. There are constant road closures that the public complains about, and it only gets worse because of the chemicals used to treat ice during the winter, and the amount of people that use studded tires. Also the sheer volume and weight of the cars ruins them faster. There is no diversity in Spokane's development. There are no pedestrian streets, you cannot safely bike, taking the bus is a stupid idea due to infrequent service and you'll have to walk 10-15 minutes to reach your destination after because stops can be very spread out at times. You don't really think about that until you go to another place and see a whole street closed off for outdoor dining, and you see how vibrant it is. Walla Walla does a better job at this and is a smaller town southeast of Spokane. It also forces you to be isolated - you can't really have one-too-many beers and bike home, you have to drive or Uber. You can't really walk along very many strips and go shopping like you can in other cities because so many good shops are so spread out. Overall: Food 7/10. Great beer, some cultural options lacking, most places are great. Entertainment 6/10. Big enough to get some big name artists. Minor-league games are also fun and affordable. Urban design 3/10. Downtown is as good as it gets and is comparable to suburban business districts in CA. Culture 5/10. Super white, diverse political spectrum. Most people here live isolated lives. Transit 7/10 for US, 3/10 compared to EU. Affordability 8/10. Used to be affordable enough to rent a 1 bdr on min wage, not anymore. Coffee is $5-6, pints are $8, burger at decent restaurant is $25. General infrastructure 8/10. Has everything you need, from big hospitals to an airport. Needs a commuter train going from east-west into Idaho though. Outdoors 10/10, you cannot get better than Spokane.

Some good, some bad. - 10/6/2022

I lived in the Spokane area for 35 years. It has its positives and negatives. Be sure and pick a safe community to live in. Rural areas are rather scary. Too many guns and drugs. There is a lot of crime in Spokane but it is in the worst neighborhoods. Not necessarily everywhere. The mayor, Nadine Woodard, is incompetent. She was a newscaster and could read a teleprompter but should not be running a city. She doesn't believe in government and gets in the way of solving the homeless issues in the city. She makes the city look bad but the voters put her there. They never hold her accountable for the way the city is being run and her decisions about the homeless problem. Spokane has beautiful fall weather. Cold winters with lots of snow and ice. Be prepared for long gray days. Summers are warm and sometimes smokey but overall delightful. Spring is wet wet wet. Lots of rain. We moved to Liberty Lake and found it a far superior place to live. 20 minute drive to Spokane and Coeur d'Alene. My negative review is about the politics and the right wing extremists, racists and lack of willingness to tackle the crime, drugs and homelessness in the city of Spokane. The city council tries but it gets overrun by the mayor. The county commissioners are useless as they are there because of the rural voters. The roads and failing infrastructure are apparent everywhere. Harsh winters are hard on roads but the voters don't want to pay the taxes to maintain them so they fall apart year after year. I blame the voters because they elect the officials that pass the laws. So we decided to pick up and move to Laguna Calif where the sun shines and we pay for the safety and beauty of where we live. We are fortunate to have that choice. So many people who live in Spokane are stuck in low income housing, low paying jobs and no opportunity for advancement. Other than medical, there really isn't a draw for large employers. 3 of our 4 adult children chose to move away and didn't want to return. Mostly due to poor job opportunities. If you can afford a nice home in a safe neighborhood and enjoy the outdoors like biking, hiking, skiing, and snowy weather, you'll be fine.

It's not the worst but it's definitely not good. - 1/27/2022

I've lived in Spokane for over 5 years after moving here from the Vancouver area for a job. I miss Western Washington. Home buying: When I first moved here, you could buy a decent home in a safe(r) neighborhood for $130k - $180k. Those homes are now going for at least $350k. Outlying areas are even more expensive as people shift to purchase in smaller communities around Spokane. Spokane Valley homes are almost unattainable. Rent: My one-bedroom, 700sq foot older-than-dirt (and not updated) apartment was $780 when I first signed in 2016. Decent cost for a single bedroom with small increases upon renewal. Currently paying $980. They now charge over $1,400 for my apartment. There are so many baseboard heaters, I can only use 3 walls throughout the entire apartment. There are no renter protections in this city and no limits on how much landlords can raise the rent. And they are raising it a lot. Look up some of the local news stories. Some are raising it 50% - 100% and the city does nothing. Vacancy rate is incredibly low, apartments and condos are non-existent, affordable housing is null - it is a landlord profit paradise. Crime: I've had my life threatened in this city for protecting myself against a dog attack and calling SCRAPS. Property crime is out of control. Police won't respond to most calls, especially property crime calls. It's always "Call Crime Check." They are severely understaffed. Homeless: The homeless are building tent cities all across the city and next to the freeway. They have become incredibly aggressive and loud, especially downtown. I avoid that area after 4pm. Panhandling on almost every corner. Weather: You get 5 seasons. Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer, and Smoke. Late Fall and Spring are lovely; Winter gets incredibly cold (negative digits); Summer gets incredibly hot (triple digits); and Smoke season ruins Summer and Early Fall. Can't really open windows or go to the lake when there is hazardous air from all of the wildfires burning nearby. Also, don't live on South Hill in winter - you're asking for a bad time. And buy some decent snow tires. Chains and studded tires are destroying the roadways, and for the rest of the year you're dealing with gigantic car swallowing potholes that the city doesn't have the manpower or interest to repair beyond halfheartedly patching them. The city has not figured out how to manage a full city plow or de-icing, and it may take days for you to be able to safely drive on the roads after a snow storm. Employment: Wages are stagnant and employers ignore how much it costs to live here, choosing to spout idiocy like, "this is Spokane, not Seattle. It's cheap to live here" with no understanding of what their employees are going through as cost of living skyrockets. Many employers refuse to provide more than minimum wage, which is, thankfully, currently almost $14/hour. Most of the larger employers in Spokane are hospitals and educational institutes. Multiple universities and colleges bring in an influx of thousands of 18 - 22 year old so finding additional part time employment is pretty much non-existent. Traffic: Traffic has gotten exponentially worse over the last 3 years. The massive increase in population that has descended on Spokane has slowed drive times and clogged roadways. When I first moved here, I was shocked at how little traffic there was but now going North > South is almost impossible during high drive times. What should take 30 minutes will run over 90 if you hit the roads at the wrong time. They've promised a North-south freeway for years but that has never appeared. They need one desperately as many roads are bumper to bumper during rush hour. Car accidents are incredibly common and you cannot trust the cars on the road with you during wintery conditions. Many speed, tailgate, or do not have appropriate tires. Drivers here do not know how to use a roundabout. Take from this review whatever you want. If I could afford move, I would immediately.

Spokan't afford to live here anymore - 12/17/2021

I've lived in Spokane for 32 of my 39 years. Growing up I had an excellent childhood here, after becoming an adult I moved away but came back because even though the winter can be rough, and the roads will destroy your car, it really was an affordable place to live. WAS. For whatever reason the very wealthy have chosen Spokane as a place to call home. The city council here panders to the very rich and couldn't care less about low income residents, which, by the way, still makes up the majority of the city's population. The downtown scene has grown by leaps and bounds the last 10 years there's a very bustling nightlife and a lot to see and do, however, the streets are now home to countless people who have been priced out of their own homes. Instead of building shelters the city chose to install spikes on places where homeless people might potentially sit and panhandle. As I write this review, I hear gunshots in the not so far off distance, a sound that was almost never heard 10 years ago, is now common within a 10 mile radius of city center. I'm from Spokane, but sadly even though I earn more than the median income, I don't make enough to buy a home here, and even if I did I don't think it's worth it. Winters are still tough, the roads are not managed well, and the public school system has state of the art facilities, but are severely understaffed, and full of scandals.

Spocompton - 6/16/2021

I've lived here for 12 years now. I'm from a small town and always wanted to live here because there's lots of shops and eateries. there are a lot of cool things about Spokane...the parks are beautiful...the gondola at riverfront park is fun..lots of activities...lots of things to do. It's a college town with about 6 different colleges to choose from. Population in the general area is about 1/2 million now. I'm sad to say the homeless population has exploded. It is very obvious just walking down the street downtown you can see people sleeping on the pavement and the city had a 1 million dollars grant to build a new shelter but they purposely didn't use it because they think it will attract more homeless people to the area. So we have people sleeping under bridges because there's not enough beds. I have been homeless before myself so I have compassion and have handed out food and blankets now that I'm on my feet again but the whole thing is overwhelming and makes me feel helpless. There's thousands of homeless people here. I'm an Uber driver now and one of my passengers from out of town remarked the homeless population is huge for a city our size. He is correct. Other nearby small towns who don't have homeless services bus people in. Then they end up in tents under the bridge. The new mayor Nadine Woodward puts on a show for the tv news she used to be a news anchor so shes good at that but there are not enough beds for these people so they are getting desperate and aggressive on the daily. The roads are full of potholes and the city patches them up half heartedly but there is no laws that restrict semi trucks from driving straight through down town and destroying them again. It has tore up a few of my cars and I'm sick of it. I'm thinking about moving over to the West side of the state near Seattle. The traffic is crazy but when I go to visit over there the roads look nicer I feel safer in general it's like a breath of fresh air compared to Spokane which is starting to feel like the ghetto with gang graffiti all over the place. I used to love this city but I can't recommend anyone move here. The housing is limited vacancy and the landlords take advantage of that. Taking app fees even though they know they are renting to one of the first few people who applied. Greedy landlords. Even greedier city leadership. It's being run into the ground.

Not for someone who likes big cities - 11/12/2020

I lived here for about a year and it was definitely not for me. My breakdown: Cons: -No diversity, all white people -Poor public transportation -A lot of run-down, boarded-up houses, even in nice neighborhoods -Not close to any major city. 4-hour drive to Seattle is the closest you'll get -Not many single young adults -Not very progressive. Liberal in comparison to the area, but nothing like a big city Pros: -Nature and local ski mountains -Light traffic -Cute pockets in neighborhoods -Very affordable

An accurate view over the last 30 years? - 8/24/2020

I went to college here in the 90's and have been in and out for 30 years but I work in Seattle now and live in Spokane. The good: The area is beautiful, trees, lakes, rivers, etc.. The people, there are tens of thousands of great people here. You will get a clearly defined 4 seasons here. There is a lot to do, the city has a well developed sports, community and recreation system, concerts, arts, etc. (I play a ton of softball and the city facility is excellent, county, not so much). The airport is easy to get to and still kind of small so it's much cheaper to park and go then Seattle. Obviously, Washington has no income tax, that's a plus but our gas tax is high if you aren't from California or Hawaii. Property taxes are reasonable but Washington sales tax is pretty much 10% now. All forms of government at the state level are controlled by Democrats who have been attempting to pass state income taxes and/or capital gains taxes for years. It's probably coming at some point but our constitution so far has prohibited it. The neutral: Spokane used to be very cheap but the housing market is climbing quickly with no end in site as Seattle has done it's absolute best to push business and working people out of Seattle/King County and Spokane is reaping that benefit/downside, which is good and bad. Rents have moved up a lot, housing prices have moved up a lot. I don't know if the job market has improved or not but I don't see a lot of great paying jobs matching the housing market increase. Schools are a hit and miss, they are best in the outlying areas and out of the actual City of Spokane. Mount Spokane, Freeman, Central Valley and Cheney are the top schools. Maybe opinions vary but it would be hard to argue that reasonably. The bad: Crime has always been bad here, mainly property crimes with fairly normal violent crimes for a city of our size. However, the homelessness...uh.....drug problem (because do no be fooled, it's not working people that are homeless here) has just continued to sky rocket and they are becoming more and more shameless and aggressive. This is a thieving city, do not leave a bicycle out on your yard no matter what neighborhood you live in. There are RV's parked in rows all over Spokane. I think crime affects everyone here to some degree, that is property crime but not so much violent crime. Winter here...well, it SUCKS! LOL. It starts snowing in November/December and you will not see the grass until the first week of March, it stays forever. Make sure your snowblower has fresh gas and starts everytime because you will need it even on a down snow year. We frequently have 1 or sometimes even 2 weeks of negative temperatures in a winter, the low temperatures keep the snow from ever melting. If you like to ski, lots of great skiing around Spokane, 3 good ski areas to the north and east about 1 hour away with more in Canada. I am sure snow shoeing and snowmobiling are excellent. There are deer everywhere, you just need a place to hunt them where it's not crowded and good hunting extends all the way to Canada. Traffic here continues to get worse just because the city is growing and there is no North/South freeway so take that into account when choosing where to live and where to work. All in all, the winter has won, the homeless have won, the drug addicts have won.....I'm out, this is still a nice place compared to Seattle and Los Angeles, I am sure.

High road or "high"road. You pick. - 5/11/2020

Spokane is a make it or break it kind of place, it is good if you have a career in the 'system'. If you are low income there is a lot of help. There is also the dark side of Spokane, as with any other city, but here it is dirtier, meaner and dangerous. It can be a great place if you are working and living. It all depends on what you chose.

Nastiest Place to Live - 4/24/2020

Full of homeless, junkies, and tons of poverty. Moved here from Las Vegas, and from there Killeen, TX and this is by far the nastiest place. It used to be gorgeous! Packages are constantly stolen off your porch, furniture, you get physically harassed while in your car. The roads are not well kept and have destroyed my tires. People here are extremely sympathetic to the homeless and junkies, to the point where their lives come before yours or your children's. Move to one of the surrounding cities, but stay far away from actual Spokane.

Good and bad of Spokane. - 1/19/2020

Spokane is a growing city due to low cost and nice communities. Good things: growing, easy traveling (including flights), nice family communities, lots of lakes and mountains for activities, no state tax, low utility costs. Bad, inner city has a high amount of drugs and street people, 4 season climate, summer to short, winter to long, and not enough community parks (lots of drivable parks). I have lived here 14 years, raising my kids, and they have all excelled. School districts are important. I miss all the neighborhood parks we had before, but don’t miss the high living costs. Summers are great, winter is ok if you like skiing, etc, but spring and fall are a toss up. Can get a lot of grey weather, a little snow or rain, but not enough sun. This is the only reason I didn’t rate Spokane a 4. Also consider Spokane valley and Coeur D ‘ Alene, ID.

Lots of people don't want you to move here... Sad. - 12/5/2019

Can you tell? Pretty sad that people say so many ignorant things. 90% of it is literally lies to keep people from moving here. There is an insanely high amount of people here who moved here already from Seattle and other areas and think that every single person who moves here behind them is going to turn Spokane into that environment. OR, they've never actually been anywhere else (at least in the last 10 years) and think Spokane is the only city in the entire country with homeless people. My advice- stop believing the ignorant crap spewing, come here and decide for yourself why Spokane is a great place to live, raise a family and call home. I've been all over the country and have never felt like I've wanted to leave.

I love Spokane! - 11/5/2019

Spokane is a wonderful place to live, work, and play. The people are down to earth and friendly. It's very easy to get around and doesn't have the bad traffic of a big city. There are tons of beautiful city parks - pretty much every neighborhood has at least one nice park. There are lots of options for food, going out, and entertainment. Spokane gets a lot of musical and other arts that come to the various venues. I've always felt very safe here and don't have to worry about crime. The area surrounding Spokane includes many opportunities for outdoor recreation, whether it's boating on one of the many nearby lakes, camping, hiking, fishing and hunting. Being from the Seattle and Portland area, Spokane has felt more like home to me because it's very laid back. I would really recommend Spokane as a nice alternative for folks looking to move away from a bigger city. If you are coming from a smaller town, you'll appreciate the "home town" feeling here.

Schools, yes. Raise a family,eh. - 11/4/2019

I have lived in other cities, but Spokane is where my family lives. I was raised here, left then came back to be with family. It is a beautiful city for the most part, they have really put effort into beautifying downtown area, and if you can look past the homeless people it really is nice. Riverfront park is like the kitchen where everyone gathers for special events. They invested their money well down there. Jobs are not readily available. If you have no skills it is easy to work at McDonalds, or some other food industry as there is a restaurant on nearly every block. If you are in your thirties and don't have a degree it is tough to find a career. Advice would be to go to the local community college and get a certificate to do something at the hospital or for Avista. Housing has gone through the roof here, the cost is outrageous. The rent is terrible for what you are getting. We need updated, clean rentals for families, but also the apartments in the area need serious updating for the amount of rent they want. The people here are what you make of it. I like the people here, overall they are very friendly. But traffic is nuts and I hate that there is a lack of freeways to get North, and most DOT money is spent on the West side of the state. Eastern Washington is mostly Republican, with the exception of inner Spokane and Pullman. The Universities are very liberal, as most are, just be careful what you buy into. It is a great place to go to school, awful place to try to afford to raise a family here anymore.

Absolutely No Recommendation. - 10/8/2019

Spokane is one type of location where you are straight up advised to find a better place to go to. Absolutely dysfunctional setting. Spokane is the absolute worst type of community that one could ever run into. Absolutely no welcoming or appreciation for ones existence as the norm. Neighborhood Watch have affiliations with the Ku Klux Klan and make up false police reports to play Russian roulette. No sense of friendship or real leadership worth your time. Police will treat you like a felon. Worst Air Quality in the Nation. Worst Job Market in the United States several times in a row. One of the worst places for property crime. Business fraud and unprofessional practices are a common routine here. Bad neighbors who are unwelcoming and suffer from severe psychological, emotional, and behavioral problems. Bad neighbors who attract skunks with absolutely no recourse as to the damage that it causes towards property and quality. Crime is widespread and is never appropriately dealt with and only gets worse due to police corruption and sheer incompetence from personnel who mishandle situations with gross mental instability. If you are a thug or a loan shark, you actually have more rights due to extensive business fraud and corruption from the top down. Police Corruption that is some of the absolute worst I have ever encountered in my whole life. A complacent population where being a hoodlum and a junkie is the norm while having any good education appears to be absent. There will be absolutely no recommendation from me for anybody to visit Spokane. More trouble than what it is worth.

Wonderful City to Live In - 8/9/2019

Spokane is a wonderful city. Less traffic and less rain than Seattle or the east coast. You get a beautiful four seasons here, with no season all that extreme (including winter - winter is just cold enough to have snow and lots of skiing. The south hill area is super unique, though there are loads of other great neighborhoods here. Unlike east of the Mississippi, you won’t find a truly bad neighborhood.

Worst Type of Place for Anybody - 7/31/2019

This will be my last and final review about Spokane. Last post on this website for that matter. Spokane Police instead decided to lecture the public about safety rather than punishing the kids who damaged a car driving by. Showing absolutely no respect for veterans who have served for the army. They didn't even charge the teenagers who made threats to an army veteran. Who else thinks this is absolutely idiotic? School districts that have personnel that don't actually teach but coddle troubled youth breeding more problems. Petty and backstabbing excuse for workplace environments. No community involvement except for a public relations campaign. Absolutely no policing of kids that go out and cause trouble. What good is a neighborhood watch or a police force if they don't lift a finger to help out but be apart of the problem? People are way too complacent with a place that shows no signs of progress and shows the exact opposite. I am moving out of here and I am not coming back anytime soon when the moment of truth arrives. What a waste of perfectly good talent and education. They just want your money. Spokane is simply too poor and defeated to be taken seriously for literally anything at all.

Very bad place to be - 6/27/2019

There are numerous people who play baseball in the park across from my house, Rochester Park, and there is no issue. But there is a group of men who are constantly and consistently hitting baseballs into the front of my house and into my car. I keep the balls to discourage them from hitting my house but that doesn’t stop them. I have over 20 baseballs they have hit into my home and car. I called Carl Strong in the Parks Department on May 10 at 9:19 am, May 10 at 9:50 am, May 31 at 9:54 am, June 5 at 8:56 am and I went to his office on June 6 and was told he and his supervisor were in a meeting. I called Jennifer at the Parks Department on June 3 and she called back a few days later and said she would look into signage. Nothing happened. I called Garrett at the Parks Department to make an appointment and had to leave a message, he never called me back. I called Garrett again on June 12 at 8:10 am and left a message. He never called back. On June 4 one of the men came up to my fence in my front yard and said he was getting his ball. I told him he was trespassing and not to come onto my property, he kept walking up my driveway anyway with me telling him to keep off my property. I had my granddaughter call the police and then he walked back to the park saying something about my being white and that he was going to damage my car. The police came and I filed a report. I called Mayor David A Condon and told him the issue on June 13 and he said he would do something about it. Nothing was done. On June 15 I drove out of town with my granddaughter and my rear drivers side tire began making noise on the highway. I stopped to check it and all but one of the lugnuts had been loosened to be barely finger tight. I made a police report. On June 27 they hit a baseball into my granddaughters window for the third time in two weeks and this time they broke it. Then they laughed about it. I called the police and they refused to come out. I made another police report. Then I took my phone and walked to the park and took photos of the license plates of the cars that were there, they belong to the men who are doing this. They are BIN 2240, 521 KVH, BHW 1025, BIZ 9397, BJU 5188, AND LHG 610, I know for a fact that you can use these plate numbers to find out who these people are, I will also be putting a shed in my backyard at my expense so I can pull my car into the garage each evening to protect it. I also now have to be the window replaced at my expense because it would probably be less than my deductible. Then I will probably have to put grates over my front windows and doors to keep this from happening again, at my expense. So I will making this information public because that is probably the only way to make this stop. This is how the city of Spokane WA treats its senior citizens. Add to this the total lack of jobs even with Amazon coming in. This is not a good place to be.

There’s a reason for all the bad reviews - 6/16/2019

There’s a reason there are so many bad reviews... I moved here a couple years ago and was pretty surprised at the ignorance of the people born and raised here. There’s a local pride in Spokane that is admirable and understandable when you’ve spent most or all your life in an area, but as many others stated, this place is disproportionately overridden with drug use, poorly educated and just an overall complacency that makes you wonder why everyone around here settles for such a poor quality of life. Seeing broken out car and building windows, drug use, violence and aggressive behavior downtown during mid day is completely normal here. Hard to put into words some of the things I’ve learned while being here but compared to many other areas, 2 stars is plenty for Spokane.
