Steubenville Ohio Sucks, so does Wintersville - 11/21/2016

Terrible area, no restaurants, no stores. One of the deadest areas in the USA. Corruption everywhere. If you are not one of the local attorneys, good luck on starting a business. Most are owned by a small group, who have control over building inspectors. Outsiders beware. Cops are abusive. Very high crime, even though the cops won't take reports of it. High heroin usage. A lot of bribery goes on here. More stores closing by the day. Hookers everywhere. If you like dumb dirty corrupt people, you may fit in here!

Whoever says there is nothing to do here is not in - 4/3/2015

I moved to Steubenville from Youngstown on April 1, 1991 and have never regretted it. Steubenville has so much to offer with few drawbacks, we have two colleges in the city-one is a large faith based institution and the other is Ohio's fastest growing Community College. We have a thriving historic district currently with two bed and breakfast in two lovely restored Victorian homes known as Bayberry Properties. We have some of the most beautiful architecture you will find on our turn of the century buildings located in our downtown business district. We have a large retail distribution center located next to an Industrial Park that is nearly full with businesses located just west of our city border. We have Ohio's oldest Harley Davidson dealer just west of our city border. We have 4 nationally known hotel chains located within our city borders and expansion expected to begin in the summer of 2015. We have many national franchise restaurants within our city as well as numerous family owned institutions. We have one of only two Historic Forts in the state of Ohio, we offer free concerts at this Fort beginning in May each year on Thursday nights. As I write this we are preparing for our fifth speaker in the series of speakers to present her story at the Steubenville Big Red Auditorium, Rebecca Gregory will tell of her severe injuries sustained at the Boston Marathon and how this event has made her truly "Boston Strong" -- other speakers in our series have been, Clint Hill, Antonio Mendez, Captain Phillips and Col. Mark Tillman. Did I mention that thanks to the generous sponsorship of a local business these events have all been free to area high school students. We have a two week celebration of our hometown annually that ends with a celebration in honor of Dean Martin every June. We have two weekly farmers markets within our city borders that take place throughout the summer months and we have a network of well funded non profit agencies here that feeds, clothes and helps to take care of our less fortunate. So for those of you who say there is nothing to do in Steubenville, get off the couch, get out in your hometown, get active and "Love Where You Live!" or move to where you will. But please do not discourage others from coming here and enjoying all there is to see and do here in small town America

Still a depressing place to live - 7/29/2014

I grew up and moved back to the area about 15 years ago to a neighboring town that shares the same zip code. This place is very depressed and hasn't improved even with the oil/gas "boom." That industry helps the young, strong men that can work 16 hrs a day. The steel industry is gone. Nothing really here in the town to work at ; most people must commute to Pittsburgh or Coraopolis, PA. Gas in this area is much higher than surrounding areas. Not sure why. Lots of crime in Steubenville and the police are having problems controlling it. Nothing really "to do" and certainly no shopping or decent eateries in the area aside from a few local places. No decent chains. THe weather sucks, it gets very cold and its overcast alot and rains. Very gloomy. I wouldn't come here if you didn't have to. Dean Martin left and was happy he did. :)

How Metro Crime Rates Are Fundamentally Flawed - 2/1/2013

Unfortunately, demographics of metro centers are to broad and general to give a clear & concise measurement. Case in point is the Steubenville, Ohio / Weirton, West Virginia Metropolitan Area. Anyone living within a one hundred mile radius will tell you of Steubenville's notorious reputation for crime. That's both blue collar and white collar crime. While it is common for weekly shootings , rapes, and other violent crimes in the 43952 zip code, it is very rare of the similar crimes in Weirton, West Virginia. Steubenville has many street gangs involved in the drug trade and has a storied reputation of police and political corruption. The town of Steuebnville uses the watered down statistics of crime from the metro for their advantage. Imagine lumping together Manhattan with Harlem or Compton with Palm Springs. So, before you decide to shell out cash on a publication for Places Rated, remember they do not go out of their way to break down the zip codes and often it is more like an area code.

Poor, Sad, and Dirty - 1/15/2010

I was born and raised here. The population has dropped in half since I left for greener pastures some years ago, and that probably sums up everything you need to know about this town. As far as employment opportunities are concerned, you might be able to find part-time work at Wal-mart or Bob Evans if you're lucky, but I wouldn't count on it. Some folks move to Steubenville because they're shocked at how cheap the houses are. Big mistake. You can find a run-down house to buy in the downtown area for about ten grand, but you'll be stuck with it forever. Nobody else will ever buy it. Most of the buildings downtown have just been boarded up or torn down. (Steubenville might have been a good place to start a parking lot business, but there aren't enough people around with cars that run.) Steubenville's politicians and civic leaders never tried to develop any new industries or tourist attractions over the years because they assumed the steel mills and the mafia would be there to keep things running. Alas, the community is now reaping the bitter fruits of its collective shortsightedness, stupidity, corruption and laziness. Storefronts are closed up, houses are crumbling, and city streets are cratered with unfixed potholes which give residents' shock absorbers a real work-out at the same time they enhancethe city's bombed-out ambience. Even the city's post office has been closed and mail is trucked to the Youngstown post office, fifty miles away, to get postmarked. One employer, Franciscan University, is a small 4-year Catholic college perched on a hilltop overlooking the Ohio River. It has survived so far by tailoring and marketing its programs to ultraconservative charismatics. Parents send their kids here to learn how to Speak in Tongues. Unfortunately, there aren't many jobs in Televangelism or Laying of Hands right now, so graduates high-tail it out of town as soon as the Commencement speaker has intoned the last "Amen." A few years ago, one young Steubenville native made a name for herself by going to California and becoming an underage porn star. Who can blame her? It was her ticket out of hell.

Terrible - 10/27/2009

Steubenville, Ohio is an AWFUL place to live! I've lived here the last 5 years, and while it was purely because I was attending the University, I'd never stay living in this area. The court system is awful and unfair, and if you're moving from a big city or suburban area to Steubenville, you'll be greatly disappointed. Also, it's a relatively well-known fact that local businesses will hire locals over FUS students/grads any day, despite how qualified you may be. Really discern your reasons for moving here; this is not the "heaven" that some people make it out to be.

I live here dont waist your time here - 8/4/2009

Ok so I noticed some people love this place apparently they have no goals or ambitions or want to work for a living cause the work is not available here and wasnt any better during the times the economy was great everywhere else. If this place is so great why are people constantly moving out and most businesses have closed ? most places that are great grow or atleast maintain a stable population.I am moving just as soon as my house gets rented.Anyone that defends this place either has the time to drive to pittsburgh everyday for work or doesnt need or want to work.As far as liberal not really lots of racism here out of both the whites and blacks.Pittsburgh is a two hour drive once you fight the traffic there so its not like this is just a distant suburb. As far as it being a nice little town its not if you like small towns thats great pick wheeling wv which is 45 minutes away or east liverpool ohio 1 hour away. This advice is coming from a local thats been here for 31 years of my life. The schools are fine but I wouldnt raise a kid here due to the lack of ambition and oppurtunity here its like once the steel mills went under the town just gave up

More Objective Review - 5/13/2009

I have lived in Steubenville and the surrounding area for the entire 25 years of my life and still do. The previous reviews seem to all (but one) be from people who either hated their experience and/or haven't lived here for the last decade. Hopefully I can offer a less biased review for those who want a better idea of what Steubenville is like. Steubenville used to be a mill-based town, and because of economic changes country-wide the mills have been shrinking and gradually closing. This hit the area rather hard as so many people and jobs were connected to them. As of yet, the area has not found an industry to take the place of the mills, and this, coupled with the recession, is why there are still so few jobs available. As another reviewer mentioned, Steubenville is only an hour from downtown Pittsburgh and about half an hour from the Robinson Town Centre(a major shopping center)and the Pittsburgh airport. My husband works in downtown Pittsburgh but we chose to stay in OH because, despite the gas, it is cheaper than living in PA with it's higher cost of living and crazy taxes. As long as you don't mind commuting, jobs are not overly difficult to find (given the current economy). Yes, Steubenville has gangs and violence, but I don't know a city that doesn't. There are a few neighborhoods that I wouldn't recommend living in, but there are also some very quaint, quiet areas. Just like any city, there are older rundown areas as well as newly developed areas. It's all in what part of town you're at. Also, you could look at Wintersville, which is directly connected to Steubenville and is generally quieter. There are a variety of options for schooling. I am not too familiar with the public grade schools but there is a private Catholic grade school that has been improved on a lot lately and has implemented a lot of great programs. For high school there is the Steubenville High School that does have a very good sports program. They are highly competitive in all sports and I have heard great things about the football coach. There is also a Catholic high school (CCHS), a very good Christian high school (JCCS)and several others in the surrounding area. College also has several options. I graduated from Franciscan University and they do offer a very good education. Their biggest programs are their nursing, theology, and business depts. They also offer half-off tuition for local high school graduates. There is a community college (JCC) as well as a vocational school a few miles out of town. Also, there is a large homeschooling community that is very supportive. The population is not as diverse as larger metropolitan areas but we do have all the basics. There are a ton of churches in pretty much every religion I can think of. It is a predominately black and white community but there is a good handful of every other ethnicity floating around. I would actually consider the area more liberal than conservative (predominately Democrats), but it's all in who you spend your time with. Yes, there are homosexuals in the area (duh) they just don't make as much noise about it as in other cities. In addition, the University has drawn many of the more conservative, religious mindset. We have all kinds, it's just a matter of finding them! I hope this review helps you make a more informed decision!

schools - 4/25/2007

Well as for the comment about the schools of course theres only 15 per class the overall population of that place is constantly declining because of a poor economy and no culture in the next 10 years the town will be a ghost town guaranteed !!!! When i grew up there 10 years ago there was 25 per class now 15 that shows whats happening there !

Read, about the REAL Steubenville. - 2/24/2007

First of all, I would like to say that negative things that "the other posters" say do not help the community in any means, so why would you sit there and cry about it... Your not helping anything by acting so negative. So heres the deal. I actually go to Steubenville High School...... and to say that there are 30-40 kids in each class is a joke. That is so funny to me. I would say that the class average is about 15 kids. In my first period art class there are about 12 kids, ACT/SAT Preperation class there are about 9 kids, Algebra 2 there are about 18 kids, British Literature there are about 15 kids, Introduction to Technology there are about 10 kids, My fitness class has about 12 kids, and my statistics class has 6 kids. So whoever says that there are.... THIRTY-FORTY kids per class..... sorry but thats a lie, they are obviously angry at the school for some other reason. You will only find small, very efficient classes at Steubenville High School. If you want to find out more about SHS, google it. SHS has top notch athletic programs. The Steubenville High School football team has won the past two Division 3 Ohio State Championships. This school has an EXCELLENT pool facility (8 lanes) probably one of the nicest you'll ever find in Ohio. I would know because I swim for the swim team, we're actually very good too. Steubenville High School has a new addition, which consists of the new swimming pool, Commons area (lunch room), and the new gym, which also consists of a state of the art track, running above the gym. There is also a very nice fitness area. The only nearby school that has anyting close to what SHS has to offer would be Brooke High School in Follansbee, WV. SHS is known for its top notch accelerated COLLEGE programs.... I'm sure that my principle did not tell anyone to work in the mill, he is a very sarcastic guy, somebody obviously took it the wrong way. The teachers here are very easy to get along with. Most of the teachers are male teachers. Very disciplinary, thats a good thing if you ask me. Steubenville is also home of one of the nicest high school football stadiums in Ohio, Harding Stadium. SHS football team is currently ranked 34th in the nation for most wins. The pride in our school systems here are great, Steubenville has never turned down a levy on the ballot, atleast within the past 20 years. Steubenville High School has about 650 kids enrolled. To say that there are 30-40 kids in each class would mean that there are only 18 teachers.

agree with Jeff and "Don't Move Here" story - 5/9/2006

We had to move here from another state almost 10 years ago, and I have never found a more morose, unhappy place as the Steubenville/Weirton area. Schools are horrid; my son was actually told, at age 16, that he was old enough to work in the mills so why did he want to continue his education? He had been ill and wanted to continue his classes to go to college, but they did not offer college-level courses. In fact, the kids he went to school with didn't know basic grade school knowledge, let alone high school to college level. When we asked the vice principal why they stated this to our son, we were told that most of the courses in the school are for the kids to graduate high school, not to continue on to college level schools. We couldn't believe it, but it was true! Our youngest now attends a parochial school (which really doesn't test his intelligence, either, but it gets him out of the overcrowded, low teacher-high student ratio [32-40 to one teacher] schools of this area) in a town 10 miles from the house we live in on the PA/WV border. He does well there, but he really needs a school where his brain is challenged. Since this is not an area of great importance, for some reason, to the OH/WV area, we are praying that we find a GOOD school for him before he enters 9th grade! Good luck to us! There are some "colleges" around here. WV Nothern Community College, Jefferson College, Franciscan University...Don't know about the University, but I don't hold any hope for the two colleges. My son tried them both and didn't get squat out of them. He headed out of state to a GOOD college and did SO much better. Better teachers, better classes, more intelligent thinking and challenges. Lots friendlier, too, and LESS EXPENSIVE if you can believe it! Finding work here is hell. Once the steel mills started closing down (which is why my husband was hauled over here...they put computers in the steel mills that they wanted him to run and now his job is elminated) the towns just up and gave up. I don't know where all this "we have a lot of spirit and gumption" comes from, but there isn't any that I can see. People walk around acting like you are the worst person in the world if you say "hi," wave or even look them in the eye. It took seven years (7 YEARS) before someone would actually talk to us, and that was a cashier who had seen us around several times before. She is now a dear person to me, but still...SEVEN YEARS before someone cares to know

DO NOT EVER MOVE HERE !!!!YOU WILL THANK ME !!! - 4/30/2006

I was born and raised in steubenville left when i was 19 and havent been back since except for a family funeral . The cost of living is great 300-500 for a house or apartment but that doesnt matter cause it is nearly impossible to find a job in this place .Averagely 6-8 months unless you get lucky . The locals are not liberal at all not a diverse place theres no asians ,hispanics ,gays or any other minority for that matter except black and theres some racial tension there as well . The steel mills that used to support the area have went under so the only major corporations that are there is walmart and herald star newspaper . The population has decreased from 37,000 to 20,000 in about two or three decades . The crime is out of control for a small town of this size especially in the so called downtown area . Summers are humid but nice if your not dodging bullets from the occasional drive by shootings .There is a mall here but with all about 15 stores the closest thing to nice shopping or dining out is in pittsburgh pa ch is one hour away . There use to be alot here but because of the town relying on the steel mills and not promoting other major corporations theres no more back bone for the town . there is one college franciscan university which most of those guys finish and move somewhere else .The city government is broke along with the school system ,local residents are always moving out .The ohio river along the steubenville /weirton wv area is dirty and not really safe to swim in . Abandoned houses are common in this town and the city is always knocking more down after they sit and rot literally after a decade . The city government is trying to bring in more restoration of historic areas and they have but so far when i went back there last summer the only new things that are there are a couple dollar stores still no big industry to support the city.Thank goodnes I left when i did I now live in Denver ,Colorado which is very clean and safer than the small town of steubenville .
