I have now lived in Alamogordo, NM for 5 years. My husband however has been here for pretty much his entire life. The reasons why we love living here can be summed up into a few words....simple, quiet, sweet, enjoyable. Our family loves to visit the big cities but not to live there. The crime rate is too high in them and they are way to noisy and busy for us. This little town has its restaurants, movie theater, plenty of sports for the kids, good schools, nice people, Wal-Mart :), and some nice places surrounding it. Ruidoso is a beautiful place to go snow skiing! wonderful cabins, and nice eating...1 hour away. Cloudcroft is the same, beautiful scenery in the mountains, nice cabins, all around sweet place to visit...30 min away. Las Cruces has a little more of a party scene for those that like that, more clubs/bars, has a mall, nice food places, and some shopping stores like Old Navy, Hobby Lobby, etc.. 1 hour away. El Paso is 1 1/2 hours away. That's where we got our closest airport. So we got everything we need right here and when we do need the occasional fancy restaurant, airport, clothes stores, we just hop in the car and make a day of it. I recommend Alamogordo for families, retirees, and anyone who likes the more quiet quaint places. Hope you come visit us soon! :)

What a pleasant review of Alamogordo, including its nearby retreats. It sounds like the kind of "Shangri-La".

Alamogordo Living - 3/3/2012

I've lived in Alamogordo for two years now after living in Tacoma, Washington (too much rain, too much crime) for 20 years. Generally, it's a nice little conservative town with low crime, cheap housing and little traffic - probably a good place to retire. However, I can't stand desert living! There's too much sun, no lakes/rivers/ocean and too much brown everywhere(yuck)! I can hardly wait to move almost anywhere else that has more water, trees & isn't so flat.[read more...]

Its Dry! - 5/22/2011

If you love hot summers and mild winters, Alamogordo is the place for you. Temps range from 90+ to 100 easily in the summer months. Refrigerated A/C is a must. Swamp Coolers are prehistoric and don't quite cut it around this small desert town. Very nice place to retire. Pop. 35k give or take a few thousand.[read more...]

Best Places in New Mexico to Live - 2/10/2009

Alamogordo is known for the atomic bomb, and white sands missile range. But for me, it's the best place on earth to live, raise a family and enjoy a moderate climate and clean mountain air.[read more...]

Maybe an Ideal Climate - 12/24/2007

Alamogordo is a city of about 35,000+ in South-Central New Mexico. We're located against the Western flanks of the Sacramento Mountain Range. About 15 miles West is the White Sands National Monument, a unique place in all the Earth, in which crystalline gypsum sands form when the mineral-laden waters wash down from the San Andres Mountains to the West, and pool in "playas" (natural depressions). As the playas dry, the mineral waters form crystals which are then broken up through the action of weather and collect and drift as "sand" dunes across the floor of the Tularosa Basin. Unlike true sand, the White Sands are formed primarily of gypsum, rather than silica. The color is truly WHITE, very like snow in its appearance. About 60 miles and one hour West is the city of Las Cruces, the largest city in Southern New Mexico. 85 miles and 1-1/2 hours South is El Paso, Texas, the closest big city to Alamogordo. Albuquerque, NM is about 3-1/2 hours North, and is the largest city in New Mexico. The state capital of Santa Fe is about 45 miles north of Albuquerque. Ruidoso, a tourist mecca offering famous quarter horse racing and skiing options, is about one hour Northeast, with a lovely scenic drive through the mountains. Cloudcroft is about 25 minutes Northeast, and at about 8500 feet elevation, is an intriguing, small historic mountain town which was formed in the late 1800s from mining and timber camps. Alamogordo is in the Tularosa Basin, which is a "high desert" environment (the city is around 4500 feet above sea level). The air has a low humidity, rarely above 40%, and the temperatures are generally moderate in range; summers rarely above 100°F, and winters rarely below 25°F. In Spring, there is our "windy" season, which may bring "white sands" dust across the area. This usually lasts roughly from April to June. Desert plants thrive, and form the basis for most landscaping designs in the area. Annual rainfall in the area is 12 to 15 inches, on average. All in all, one of the most pleasant places, climate wise, I've ever lived in.[read more...]

plain and simple- don't move here! - 9/4/2007

I hate to be the pessimist here, but if I had known what this place would be like when we got the choice of Alamogordo, NM or Germany- I would have chose Germany hands-down! I'm a young adult, female Hispanice, married for 2 years- this place has almost torn me and my husband apart! For our anniversary this year we had to go 'food-tasting' because we were on a budget and there's nothing to do here! You have to drive at least an hour to go do anything fun- here it's mexican food, chinese food, american food, and your occasional outdoor sports. They have a couple bike shops and a long road that goes over a few hills. An hour away there's a lake that's open during the summer that you can go to to rent kayaks, paddleboats, and go to fish. People are blind to the fact that there are drugs being used at the workplaces here, the children barely get an education at school, and either no one cares about their pets anymore or they just keep multiplying! There are stray cats and dogs all over the city, and the only solution that they give here is adopt in the 3 days they hold the pet or it gets put down. Unemployment is above the national average because they keep deciding to build restaurants instead of entertainment vendors of some sort. I've been here 1 year and 8 months and have had 3 jobs- 1 I quit because of the drugs being used in the workplace, 1 I was fired from because the manager said that they couldn't afford to have any more women if they were just going to get pregnant and then have to take a life-long maternity leave, and 1 I quit because of the racial slurs my boss kept using towards me! The reality of Alamogordo is that if it doesn't change dramatically everyone will wander away and just forget this place because it has nothing to offer. They don't call this 'The Land of Entrapment' for no reason.[read more...]

But its a DRY Heat! - 3/19/2006

Alamogordo is a quiet little town located in the south central part of NM. Its home of Holloman AFB and its also an excellent retirement town. If you don't mind temperatures in the upper 90's and in low 100's in June, July and especially August then this town is for you. Winters are mild and Cloudcroft is the nearest winter wonderland when it does snow. (about 30 miles east) El Paso is about 90 miles south and you are near also to the Mexican border. Rainfall is almost non-existent in "them there parts"..but its a Dry Heat! Humidity is virtually not a word here either. Population is around 35,000 and the housing is becoming more expensive since its a very popular little city for people who want to get away from the big city but still want to enjoy the warmth of the S/W. Alamogordo is a quaint little town to rest relax and retire. Snowbirds welcome!![read more...]

Crime rates - 8/10/2005

According to the FBI, Alamogordo, NM is one of the safest small cities around. I am left questioning your murder and rape stats. An explanation of these numbers would be worth examining. I realize that the stats are skewed to a per 100,000 per capita calculation BUT...There have been no murders recently to add to this data nor do I find the rape numbers believable. Violent crime in this area is rare and it usually involves gangs passing thru between El Paso and the crime mecca of the Southwest...Albuquerque. I would appreciate your readers knowing that life in this part of the country is safe and that the ordinary person looking at some of your stats would probably wonder what is going on in such a small city. When the FBI gives us high marks and the day to day happenings on the streets say that we have a very safe city, it pains me to see stats such as yours reflect badly on what the real situation is. Many of us in Alamogordo do not lock our doors or windows; we walk and jog the streets late at night; we drive anywhere we want without concern; our houses are relatively safe from regular break-ins(except for bored kids or wandering trru vagrants/druggies; auto theft is minor(again usually related to smugglers going to Mexico); and the overall safety of our citizens is one of the reasons why this is such a desirable area. Our public safety officers are outstanding and work very dilligently to keep our city safe for its citizens. Regards, Michael Fowler Alamogordo, NM 88310[read more...]
