The historic center of des plaines is also downtown. Fairly easy commute to Chicago. The metra is right there. Also there is the Des Plaines public library with a great wealth of books and other media. There are several small parks and forest preserves nearby. Several restaurants, though not exceptional, offer a variety of cuisines. I notice several different ethnic groups in the area. See several people of eastern European descent as well as Asians including East Indians. Would recommend living here if you are young and just settling down.
