"a good place to live"

a good place to live - 5/13/2006

Pompano Beach, FL

I have lived here since 1992, and except for the occasional hurricane, it's a pretty nice place to live. It takes awhile to get used to the climate, but once you do, it offers a pretty nice lifestyle.

One of the worst places I've lived - the people ar - 5/26/2014

I moved back to the Oakland Park, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach area in Mid 2013 after graduating. The city is nice looking with decent weather, but the PEOPLE are the problem. Someone submitted a post on May 17, 2014 about Orlando, FL, but what she expressed was exactly how I felt while living in this city. She wrote: "Truth how bad Orlando, really is - 3/18/2011 - 5/17/2014 no he is right...ORLANDO IS THE WORST!! people there will be nice to you if you are average- if you are different or even outstanding you will get abused. the residents are ALL PSYCHOPATHS. very few are NORMAL. Orlando is full of devil people? they aren't human they are robotic demons from hell designed to infest that city and destroy the normal people that live there. there are no good jobs and recruiters are losers from other cities who shun good qualified people. ive worked at places full of angry ugly fat Hispanics and low lifes who all treated me like dirt. there is so much evil and bad in that city its shocking. the people are the WORST worse than some ghetto place in harlem or even in any third world country. these people in Orlando aren't people they are soulless maggots. neighbors are sociopaths- an entire neighborhood of sociopaths HARASSED me for no reason and pick on random people. I hope all of these evil worthless people perish in hell where they belong. FAMILIES are evil disturbed deranged BAD PEOPLE. its IMPOSSIBLE to make friends unless the clicks of psychos accept you and most people are so closed unfriendly no one will. the people of Orlando are the most disgusting filth to exist...trust me no one can hate a place like this...it isn't a place full of humans. I agree with Gabriel totally- many people move here and just suffer because of the quality of filth humans that exist there...I am a kind sweet caring smart beautiful educated female- anywhere I go almost I get shunned mistreated talked bad about judged- even chickfilas bully me for no reason. I cant make friends people are so mean unfriendly...sick people there. if I try to make friends I get kicked out, banned. the people there aren't human?? even at Disney its full of nasty rude cast members now who are arrogant and crazy. the entire city is made up of sociopaths. thai and Asian restaurant employees are psychos. Orlando is the worst city on the PLANET...I promise you this. its worse than some trashy third world country...its the WORST. now even though tampa and Jacksonville both suck too but at least the people there are normal!!! despite tampa being crappy...there are normal people there! here in Orlando I try going to a drive thru and the nasty nasty low class filth sh*t there are rude mean. there are angry psychotic Puerto Ricans nasty spics everywhere, nasty white people, even the black people in Orlando are monsters. go to DC and the black people are nice!! go to Atlanta and black white anyone is nice!! Orlando is HELL ON EARTH..." these are my same feelings about Fort Lauderdale, Oakland Park. It may be a Florida thing or not but there's something definitely wrong that's going on.

Tropical living - 10/16/2013

I love where I live and I am a native Floridian born in Miami. The weather is great here it can truly be paradise at times. But, like every other city it has it downside and to me that is it is very overpopulated! There are some great people here and I know a lot of them, getting to the age that I want a more simple life. I do love south florida it is a great place to live.

Ready for a change - 9/6/2012

I've been living in Ft Lauderdale for 8 years now. I'm originally from Northwest PA, so you can imagine the desire I had to live somewhere in the south. I moved here for college and it was quite the transition for me as it was a huge culture shock. I can honestly say after being here through the toughest years (and still growing up) of 18-26 I'm over this place. Finding work is difficult, there seems to be no middle class. It's either you're driving a Ferrari or you're the person waiting hand and foot on the owner of that Ferrari. Everything here is about show, who has this amount of money, where their 2nd home is, plastic surgery and body issues. There a very few genuine people in this town. Neighbors don't speak, you don't wave hello to passer by's. The plus sides to this city is the beach and of course the tropical weather. If you enjoy walking or riding a bike this is a great place for that. South Florida is lush with many different cultures and living here you learn a lot about them. If you're looking for a wild place to party and living a life of excess this is the place to do it. If you're looking to settle down and live life on the conservative side Ft Lauderdale is not for you. Hope this helps

Not too keen - 4/13/2012

I recently moved to Fort Lauderdale and will have been living here a year, come August. I'm not fitting into the culture at all. Overall, there is a huge phoniness and detachment from others. I truly miss the mid-west lifestyle and the kindness and respect you receive from the people. I thought this town would be full of culture with all the Island people and persons of Spanish decent, but it's not that way at all. I feel like I live in a 3rd world country. There are way too many snow birds here as well as transients. I thought they mostly resided on the gulf. There also seems to be a lack of rich culture as it relates to music, food, and the arts. These are very important to me. I thought living here would be much better than it is. What a huge disappointment. My only saving grace is the beach! At least I have that. Huge thumbs down for me. Did I pick the wrong town in FL to move to? Are there hidden treasures in Fort Lauderdale that I have yet to discover? At any rate, my condo is super affordable and at least I can someday turn it into a little investment property. I'm thinking I need to move to Boston in the next 3-5 years. We shall see. I'm also interested in Portland and Seattle. It all depends on the best nursing job I can find. Until then, I hope the people who live here enjoy it much more than I am.

Fort Lauderdale, FL - 1/11/2012

Living in Fort Lauderdale definately has its fine points. Its got great beaches and resteraunts. Shopping is good if you have a few bucks. Appartments and housing are pretty reasonable. And the people are just "ok". But you can still find some good friends and have fun. On a scale of 0-10, I'd give it a six in regards to all around liveability. Its really hot from April - November but its great cuz there are little snow birds here then..LOL

Exciting place to live - 12/22/2011

Ft. Lauderdale to me is perfect in so many ways. It is a great size, offering diverse neighborhoods, ranging from suburban to true downtown areas. I lived in Boca Raton most of my life and must say that this area is much more exciting. Some parts of Ft. Lauderdale are a little gritty compared to Boca, but I think it offers a lot more character.

Living in Fort Lauderdale - 7/2/2010

I moved to South Florida in 1990 from New York and have not looked back. If you love being outdoors 365 days a year then this is the place to be. The weather is wonderful year round. Even when it's hot outside you can go into an airconditioned home, car or restaurant. And speaking of restaurants, there are so many to choose from you can never be bored. Last night I ate at Smith and Jones on Las Olas. It was fabulous. Living in downtown Fort Lauderdale is especially convenient as you can get to the aiport, beaches, restaurants and shops within 10 minutes. If you want to do a little gambling that might take you 20 minutes. I am a local Realtor and now is the time to buy here as interest rates are the lowest in 50 years. Plenty to do - 10/23/2009

Fort Lauderdale is no longer from the movie Where the boys are. It is all grown up. It is a major city, with plenty of entertainment, resturants, and city living. The winters are wonderful weather wise, but a haven for people running from the cold. It is definately a tourist town, and can slow everyone down. The beaches are kept clean, and there is plenty of space for everyone. The Seminole Indians have created gambling casinos, that are not only beautiful to visit, but have plenty of entertainment, and all different types of eating establishment All in all you will love it here if you are into the fast lane.

Life in Fort Lauderdale - 10/8/2009

Prior to moving here about 10 years ago (2000) I have been visiting Ft. Lauderdale for 25 years. Arriving in the winter for a vacation of 20-30 days. Just about always residing in a beach hotel or one of the nicer smallers hotel a few blocks from the beach, dinning in the nicer restaurants, sunninng at the beach made for a relaxing vacation. The last week of my hard earned vacation my wife and children flew from Boston to join me. By 2001 I was getting divorced, I spent three months in S. California, but then winter arrived and as habit dictated I hopped a flight to Ft. Lauderdale. Once again checking into a nicer hotel I enjoyed my month, but this time it was different because I really had nowhere to hand my hat. So instead of flying back to California I stayed here. I rented a unit, purchased bedding and such, after a year of doing nothing (which was fine with me) I happened to met a nice lady and in a flash we were a couple. We purchased a house and together started a new life together. This is what I really want to say....Fort Lauderdale is divided into 2 sections...the RICH and the POOR. While not poor I am by no means rich. But the poor residing here has become a problem. Black kill Blacks, Black steal from each other, the schools are the worst that I have ever seen, most teachers are underpaid, city employees are over paid, most of our city officals could care less about solving problems, housing cost are very high, FPL rapes all of us with their high billings. The roads are in need of repair, traffic is crazy, street lights don't work, water pipes burst often flooding intersections, the police as a group are rude ( not all but most)property taxes are sky high. The whole city is flooded with drugs....if I was smart I would have taken my G/F who is now my wife and moved out of state.

Native South Floridian looking to get out!!!! - 9/27/2009

Please save yourself the stress and look elsewhere to live. This place is awful, even for me, a lifelong 30 year old South Floridian who is "used to it". Crime is through the roof, people are rude, the city is racially divided, and the populace is waaaay too congested. South FL is the beacon for refugees from Cuba and Haiti. There are many poor neighborhoods around here- within blocks of the nicer areas. Every year, all the bohemians fly to fort lauderdale to shop at Wal-Mart during "tax free week". Winter is overloaded with snowbirds, causing our already congested roads to come to a grinding halt every year. In Fort Lauderdale, you learn how to become an aggressive driver real quick, lest you get cut off or ran off the road entirely. This is no paradise. I remember when I was a little kid, things were different. Our beaches actually had life in them- fish, crabs, etc. Now that is a thing of the past, unless you are willing to drive down to the Keys. People dump tires, shopping carts, coolant, and everything else in the bays. No one cares about the environment, even the city officials, who dump millions of gallons of semi-treated WASTEWATER into our beaches everyday!

Perfect place for greedy folks obsessed with vanit - 1/25/2009

Nice weather for some of year. Too hot for the rest. Hurricanes are bad. Everything overpriced, service is generally poor. Many vagrants wondering around like zombies especially in Hollywood. People are transient so nobody gets to know anyone else. It is like having a rental car in that nobody seems to care about other people down here. But everyone sure is pretty.

I've had enough - 8/16/2008

I've lived in Broward County for 25 years, and it's time to move on. The changes have been drastic, and not many have been for the better. Weather: I can't take the summers any more. If you live on the west side you don't get the breezes and the mosquitoes are awful. We worked very hard to buy a home and fix it up, and we can't afford to have Mother Nature pick our pockets every couple of years. We've spent $40k in the last 5 years hurricane-proofing the house. The fences, sprinkler system, trees, and outbuilding that were damaged in the last several years aren't covered by your insurance policy. You get to pay to fix all that yourself. Try to save for college or retirement now! Culture: I'm ready for a different cultural influence. Anyone with money in Venezuela is getting out and coming here. West Broward will be "little Caracas" in a few more years. I don't like what has happened to Dade and I see it coming here. You start to feel unwelcome in your own hometown if you don't listen to the "right" music, dress the "right" way, speak the "right" language. Remember, we have the rudest drivers in the country. Courtesy is non-existent. I travel and go to places where people are actually nice to each other, and I hate coming home. This is the number one reason I'm ready to go. Money: Ignore people who complain about taxes here. Folks down here don't know what real taxation is. Nobody wants to pay for anything, and the greater good is rarely considered. The schools are horrid (just try to hire people to work for you.) I think the problem is that everyone's driving flashy cars, spending too much money on clothes, hair, tans, etc. Being shallow can be very expensive. The housing market is giving a big spanking right now to speculators and folks that decided to live beyond their means. This is part of what's driving the current wave of immigration. Home prices are falling rapidly right now. Because we live out here at the end of the earth, everything costs more. It's still a tourism-based economy, and you know what pay is like in those kinds of places. Saving can be difficult, even when you budget. If your retirement allows for the price of living here, or you're beautiful on the outside and want to spend beach time with other "pretty people," then by all means come on down. I don't recommend South Florida (not just Fort Lauderdale) for people, especially with children, who want other parts to their life- family, community, education, financial stability. It's a shame, because there are beautiful places here. The fishing is still very good, and it's heaven for birdwatchers like myself. Like anywhere else, people come in and mess everything up.

Native of Ft. Lauderdale - 7/6/2008

There are pockets of nice, educated people in Ft. Laud., and there's actually quite a lot of family-oriented activities. Fantastic children's art and science museums. beautiful nature centers and parks, and good city-sponsored sports programs for kids of all ages. Excellent private schools, but lots of iffy public schools; the state spends little on education. The state university system, until this year, had some Ivy League-level majors and programs, but state budget cuts are now decimating the colleges. For single people, especially in the age range of 30-50, Ft. Laud. is a terrible place to be. The scene is materialistic, with lots of plastic surgery-enhanced women looking for meal tickets, and paunchy, flashy men who take full advantage with revolving bedroom doors to the gold-diggers. Cost of living and housing remains extremely high, even with the real estate slump. It's brutally humid from mid-May to mid-October, making it unpleasant to do anything outside. Atlantic ocean breezes do make it less miserable than Florida's central and west coast cities, though. The pop. is very diverse, with Hispanics now the slight majority. If you are a well-to-do married couple with children who enjoy a mix of different cultures and hot weather, Ft. Lauderdale is ideal. If not, re-consider. As a 43-yr-old Ft. Laud. native and now a single mom, I'm ready to find a city with more down-to-earth, smart, non-gay men, where public schools are more of a priority. Any suggestions?
