Its about the economy

Being an Anglo native New Mexican, I have grown up waiting for New Mexico
to develop an economy that is not reliant on federal dollars. Fifty-one years I have waited and am still waiting. New Mexico is a government funded economy
and the majority of the decent wage jobs all revolve around the two research labs, Los Alamos and Sandia Laboratories. Without them this state would die, as our politicians are fully aware. There are also more attorneys than can make a living here, so personal injury competition is fierce. The disparity between the minority well paid and the majority poor creates high tension. The tremendous influx of immigrants, both legal and illegal, from Mexico, Central America, and South America keeps wages deflated as well and businesses take full advantage of it, which makes it difficult for the citizenry to demand a living wage. There are many wonderful and beautiful aspects to New Mexico, but the economy is not one of them and a shortage of water is quickly becoming a major issue that has been ignored for too long.
