It's all relative - 4/2/2008

I was thinking of relocaating to Arlington, TX from NYC. I see a few posts about Arlington being too crowded, crime is high...etc. etc.. I'm coming from New York a city of 8 million people, i live in the county of Kings(Brooklyn) which has approx. 2 million people. The city is still growing. The real estate market is out of control. I make 85,000 dollars a year and cannot afford to buy a home in NYC. A one bedroom condo starts at 1.5 million, a house under 1,000 sq ft goes for 400,000 and up. Crime although it went down it still is a significant amount. I'm sure Arlington cannot compare. I see the houses in Arlington are very affordable, and you get alot for your money. So tell me Honestly, would it be a mistake to relocate to Arlington, or should I look elsewhere.

Economy is strong, housing is affordable, and crime is better than Fort Worth or Dallas

Very Hot, If You Grew Up With Distinct Seasons, Lo - 9/3/2007

I moved to TX in 1985 from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I didn't leave Michigan because of the weather. I lived in Texas 20 years as there was always work however, after 10 years, I was ready to go back up north. Finally, I did move back and I'll never move to such a hot place ever again. In fact, I have no plans to ever leave Michigan again, depressed or not.

Boring for an outdoor lover - 6/8/2007

I've lived in Arlington since 1981. Since then it has grown way too big and the roads and services have not been able to keep up with this growth.Traffic is a disaster. As an outdoor lover, Arlington doesn't have much to offer. Parks are few and very small, lake fronts are mostly privately owned, no mountains to hike, hot and HUMID for 5 months of the year, lots of pollutions, lots of severe weather. Housing is real affordable, and the job market is good. In general it is a boring place to live unless you like shopping , eating out, and movies (which lots of people do).

A, B, C, D.... - 4/10/2007

Everyone's complaining about the weather and that Arlington is getting too big, but for all those people moving here with families: I'll give you a run down on the school district. I have no credibility when it comes to Arlington, schools because I went to a Highschool in Grand Prairie, but many of my friends went to AISD. If you are wanting a good source of location: I would either put my kids in North Arlington or South Arlington, AVOID CENTRAL ARLINGTON!!! High Crime Rate. In South Arlington, is an upper scale you have your Lake Arlington Money Bags. Martin is a good high school and So is Lamar, I would Avoid Arlington HS with all cost, it's in a lower part of the city and right by University of Texas in Arlington (UTA). Litterally right down the street. Where in my high school days - we could NOT leave campus to go get food, many of these schools can. If you move more South Arlington then you are almost in Mansfield School District which is nice. Advice: Check out each school, go to the classrooms when there are CLASSES being taught, look in, observe, you want nothing more but the best school for your children. If arlington is too big - good City is Mansfield, next door to Arlington. Happy Learning...

In the Mist of it all - 4/10/2007

Honestly if you are looking for a suburb between two big cities: ARLINGTON, TX IS PERFECT. Being in my late 20's: there is PLENTY to do East and West of Arlington. Yes to the posting below, it's not like San Fran w/ cute little hole in the wall places and yes there are chains everywhere (that's why everyone is bigger in tx) but if you know where to go, there are some really quaint places to eat. As far as attractions: This is FAMILY CENTRAL OF AMERICA. You have Hurrican Harbor (aquatics park), SIX FLAGS over Texas (roller coasters and shows), Ball Park in Arlington (Texas Rangers Baseball) and the new DALLAS COWBOY STATIUM (ok everyone knows who the dallas cowboys are) What more could you ask for - there are spa's for the ladies, Games and sports bars for the men, theme parks for the kids, and not to mention Dallas is 15 min East and Fort Worth is 12 min West. In Dallas you have practically Everything - uptown, downtown, Greenville Ave the posh way of living. In Ft. Worth, your stock yards, historic, laid back way of Texan Living with Unique Bars and Nighlife - you soon will be occupied for months. In all Arlington, is a great place to live - it's surrounded by the H-E-B, Grand Prairie, Mansfeild, and Fort Worth - but if your wanting to settle with family, it's a great get-a-way from Dallas-Ft.Worth. And if you are a young striving couple or single person - great place to relax and get both tastes of the different lifestyles both Dallas and Ft. Worth have to offer. -Good Living

Arlington, TX is a dump - 2/28/2007

Arlington is great if you love chain restaraunts, bill-boards, used car lots, heavy traffic that has only three major North-South arteries, two of which are bisected by a train and punched frequently with red-lights, and the other can't accommodate the volume, no public transportation (because city leaders actually believe that public transportation will bring crime. . . . which doesn't explain the . . ), high crime, ugly architechture, and virtually no city planning (or, a city planner run amok in a Disposable Housing Store). If this is what you consider a good time, then Arlington is the place for you.

Don't Mess With Texas - 12/28/2006

Everyone who lives in Texas knows how confusing the weather can be. Is it gonna rain tomorrow? snow this winter or storm this tornado season? Who knows? Even the weather teams have trouble deciphering the weather around here. Don't be too suprised when you see people wearing shorts and flip-flops on Christmas Eve or donning raincoats and sweaters on the 4th of July. Once you get used to it, it's not that bad. When the weather is good, it's great and can last for months but you're never sure when the pleasantness will end or for how long. Also we can have bad storms and tornadoes. Every year we have a tornado season. Whether or not a tornado actually occurs is a different story. Sometimes many occur in one year but Arlington hasn't been touched by one in the 20 years I've lived here. It is a possibility but more often than not; we just get hail, lighting, thunder, tons of rain, strong winds and tornado warnings during the season(it's usually around March/April-June). Also, for those who don't know; you can tell when a tornado is coming later that day because the sky is pink, it gets really windy, then still and the sky looks like rain is coming but rain doesn't come(until later of course when the tornado is closer).

Home Sweet Home - 8/5/2006

I have lived in Arlington 10 years and taught school in Arlington for five years. Arlington is a suburb of Fort Worth, but is rapidly becoming a big city of its own. Actually, I don't really know if you could call it a suburb any more. Arlington is running into the same problems that other big cities have, but there is a great sense of pride in the community. I worry sometimes that the growth will change Arlington too much. But for now, it is "Home Sweet Home" and I am proud to say that I live in Arlington, Texas.

Brutal Summers, Comfortable Winters - 7/20/2006

I've lived in the Fort Worth/Dallas area in Texas since 1988 and have always hated the summers here. The average high during the hottest period here (the last two weeks of July through the first two weeks of August) is 96 degrees F. However, it is very common to have many days over 100 with some days reaching 105 or hotter (It's been 102 to 105 every day this week). In addition to the miserable heat, we are close enough to the Gulf of Mexico to have many days with a fair amount of humidity. There isn't much escape at night, either. On many evenings, the temperature can still be in the mid-90's at 10:00 PM. I try to stay in the house in the summer. We also have plenty of air pollution watch days throughout the summer. Heat, humidity, and air pollution: that sums up what summers are like. Winters, on the other hand, are quite comfortable: usually in the 60's. It can get down into the teens and even single digits once-in-awhile, but that never lasts more than a day or two, then the wind is back from the south bringing up warm Gulf air. Being raised in northern Oklahoma, I grew up playing in snow in the winters. It does snow here once or twice a year but it usually melts within a day. I miss the snow.
