relocation - 12/19/2008

We currently live in Lincoln, NE & I love for its city amenities but small town feel. It sounds like Sioux Falls is very similar. What we don't like are the horrible tax rates here & it sounds like Sioux Falls is much better in that respect. What I am concerned about is the availability of services for special needs children. I haven't found much information on that. Our daughter has CP & is wheelcahir bound. We love her school & she receives great services here. I have heard that healthcare in general is great in Sioux Falls but I am wondering if anyone in a similar situation has any first hand knowledge to share.

A Good place to live if you can stand the weather - 8/8/2008

I lived in Sioux Falls for 14 years - just moved away 5 months ago. Other than the weather, the town has everything anyone could want. It's not New York, but there is plenty of culture and things to do (I miss that). Great hospitals and schools. Housing costs and insurance are reasonable. Crime is not too high for a town its size and the people are very trusting. With all that said, it has some of the worst weather of all the places I have ever lived. The winters are harsh, lasting for months. Sunshine is rare. The summers are hot and humid, with lots of mosquitoes. If you take it one season at a time, it's not so bad; taken as a whole, the constant extremes will do you in. Sioux Falls would be THE choice to live if it wasn't for the weather.

Life in Sioux Falls - 7/7/2008

We moved to South Dakota from Florida 6 years ago. Life is slower paced, people are honest, low racial tension, good schools. Winters can be brutal, but worth it. Good arts and music scene, dining is excellent. There is more to do than any city of its size that I have ever seen. The cost of housing is fairly low and doesn't see the highs and lows as other parts of the country. The downtown area is immaculate with superior dining.

Don't ever move here....ever! - 6/2/2008

Sioux Falls is an awful place. Winters in Sioux Falls are like hell froze over....I didn't even want to get out of bed the WHOLE time. Summers are hot and extremely humid. There is absolutely nothing to do and all anyone ever does is go the bars and get wasted and make fools of themselves. There is not culture or diversity so you get the same person in a different body. If you are a city person, then do not subject yourself to sioux falls. Though it is the biggest city in SD, it is the worst "city" i have ever lived in.

Great Place to Live, Work and Raise a Family - 11/3/2007

I am 58 yrs. old and have worked cons. all over the western half of the USA. Born and raised in Vermillion, SD. If I had to pick a number one spot to live and raise my children, I would pick SFSD.!! It is a growing city, has great schools, job opportunities, great health-care, ( great VA Hosp.) great hunting and fishing.! Only thing bad is the hot, humid summer, cold winter and allergies !! If you can work around these, it is a great place to live !!

DRUGS???? - 6/27/2007

I know you can't get away from drugs....unfortunately!! However, what drugs does Sioux Falls have a problem with...if any at all?? In Orlando Florida, it is everywhere. I have even seen drug deals go down right in front of my own eyes while driving by!!

What are the lakes like in Sioux Falls?? - 6/27/2007

I might be relocating to Sioux Falls from Orlando Florida. I hate it here, due to crime, and the humidity sucks LOL There is a saying here. "Assume that there is an alligator in every body of water!". Needless to say we don't go in the lakes much here. Even the natural springs have them, and I'm not up much on being gator bait :) I'm originally from Michigan and grew up going to the lake for every 4th of July and camping. Are the lakes nice and clean and are there alot of woods by them?

Apparently dutch is the way here and anything else is picked on, and discriminated against in all ways. The first thing out of everyones mouth is "Im Dutch", "Im Swedish" Really, "Im American!!!!!!" So dutch or Swedish whatever, welcome home. Anyone else, you may think twice before heading here.

Sioux Falls is GREAT!!! - 10/10/2006

My wife and I moved from the Omaha area 5 years ago. Omaha is a great city, but the crime rate is high and the taxes will drain your bank account. There are several positives to living in the Sioux Falls area: Low crime rate, Low property taxes, Affordable housing with new construction (residential/commercial) all over the city, Strong economy with the lowest unemployment rate in the nation, An abundance of shopping/eating venues, Multiple parks/swimming pools, Excellent school system with the 3 public high schools ranked in the top 1,200 in the nation (22,000+ in US) and Sioux Falls only catholic high school ranked in the top 50 (1,100+ in US), Top notch health care system with Sioux Valley Hospital ranking in the top 50 in 3 specialties (5,100+ in US), Continuing education opportunities with public/private colleges and tech schools, Four season weather (winters can be rough), Easy access to 2 interstate systems (I-90/I-29) with Omaha and Minneapolis 3-4 hours away. Sioux Falls is lacking some cultural and ethnic diversity, but this is changing as the city continues to grow. No town/city is perfect and every person has his/her opinion of what the ideal town/city is. Some enjoy the hustle and bustle of a NYC, L.A., or Chicago. If you prefer a slower pace with the setting to raise a family, start a business, or re-locate yourself, Sioux Falls is an A+.

I'm new to the area - 9/29/2006

I was born and raised in northeastern South Dakota and it's not great for weather. The summers are very humid and can peak out around 100F and there are a lot of mosquitos. The winters can be really cold and snowy. Sub zero temperatures are no rarity.

After living in Sioux Falls for 6 years... - 6/22/2006

After living in Sioux Falls for 6 years, I have went through all the phases of moving and getting acquainted with a city. I hated Sioux Falls when I moved here, I had the "there is nothing to do here" state of mind. However, there are a lot of things to do in Sioux Falls, everything from sports (we have the Sioux Falls Storm, arena football, Stampede, hockey, Canaries, baseball, Skyforce, basketball), we have the Washington Pavillion of Arts and Sciences which has a science museum and various plays, musicians, dance related shows and the Omnitheatre. We also have a nice sized mall, the Sertoma Butterfly House, the Great Plains Zoo, the Game Fish and Parks outdoor campus, and a wide variety of parks and playgrounds for the children. There are several lakes and campgrounds for those who love the outdoors, as well as the Big Sioux River and Falls Park, there are biking trails, there are many community pools, some with waterslides, and there is Wild Water West which is a waterpark that also has paintball and batting cages, Thunder Road which has a small race track and minigolf, there is also 3 round dirt tracks for auto racing enthusiasts. We have many bars and restaurants. Every style of food imaginable. We also have the rodeo which comes to town several times a year. The Minnehaha County Fair, arts and crafts festivals, car shows (the most recent having Chip Foose appearing along with Jeff Gordon's #24 car). For those with kids we have some great public schools and private schools, dance academies galore, there are summer baseball/fastpitch leagues, pool/dart leagues, book clubs, Universities/Trade Schools, and outdoor shows for the kids and festivals for the adults. Downtown Sioux Falls also has the Phillips to the Falls project which is a walking path that leads from Downtown to Falls Park. Downtown itself has a wide variety of unique stores to visit. With two choices of hospitals and also having the heart hospitals you know you are well taken care of in that aspect as well. I myself have never known of anyone that has been mistreated due to race, however, I am sure it happens but not to the extent that many other cities have. I work for a ciminal defense law office and can tell you that 95% of our cases are DWI cases and in the 10 months I have been here we have not had any violent crime cases. Sioux Falls is not a city that has entertainment jumping out at you like the larger cities. However, if you pay attention you can find plenty

Nice Place for Natives or young families with up a - 5/26/2006

We moved here with much anticipation, but due to age, the cold winters, and the laws within the state and some within City codes. We had bad experiences with one realtor and his company, the courts here are very geared to business, as the laws are written. Therefore after two years we are looking for a fresh beginning with more options.

Really the Best Place - 5/4/2006

If you can tolerate the winter cold, the short but sweet summer months (full of mosquito's and wind) you'll love it in Sioux Falls. The people are first rate and very friendly. Lots of culture to choose from including sports, arts, events, theatre and dining. Most would go out of their way to help you. Crime rate is very low, so is the cost of living. Jobs are ample and the ecomony is great, gets better every year. The city offers some of the best college/university and schools in the nation. You can't go wrong moving here.
