Great City if you love low crime and lots of work - 6/29/2023

I have lived in Bismarck for most of my life and I really do enjoy it. It does have its pitfalls being it does have very extremes when it comes to weather. Much of the activities that people are going to do are reliant on the green outdoors including going to the river or fishing or hunting along with bonfires or having a fire outside in your yard. There aren't a lot of places to go for activities like clubs and the like. When it comes to kids there's a lot of water type things for them to do during the summer but for the most part it's the same thing it's reliant on having kids go play golf or frisbee golf or any summer sports. North Dakota definitely has a different perspective when it comes to things to do. A lot of people say it's boring but the reality is it's a place where you have to be active if you want to have things to do and what I mean by that is physically active. Which is something that is happening less and less. Some people do complain that the crime has went up a little bit but overall when you look at the numbers it's actually one of the lowest crime cities in the United States when it comes to per capita. When it comes to people North Dakota does have a lot of great people but I can tell you 100% covid and social media has ruined a lot of people on how they interact with others. Obviously that isn't just a Bismarck thing it's a worldwide thing. But it's definitely palpable. When it comes to work there are plenty of jobs and many of them pay above the average in the area even your average first time employee should make 15 bucks an hour minimum. There are more and more jobs available that pay pretty well that require little to any schooling so that can be a positive for a lot of people. The cost of living has jumped up quite precipitously including rent when I was looking at the average rent it sounds like it's about a thousand bucks for a two bedroom apartment and that's an average one. Homes have definitely jumped up in price breaking $300,000 on average. Homeowners insurance and car insurance is relatively low so are utilities for the most part. Traffic is really pretty good unless it's during the summer construction time definitely slows you down 5 to 10 minutes. It's a great family place to live they are our great people some people did get lost during covid that definitely affected things. One thing that is slowly changing is the state isn't exactly the most diverse when it comes to culturally, while some will say r

Wood Smoke or Other Air Pollution Problems??? - 6/14/2012

Two thirds of the peope in Washington state are 24/7/365 indoor and outdoor wood burners. People have no hobbies, interests, commom sense, intelligence or compassion for death or human suffering. Their only past time and interest in life is lighting wood on fire. Their only reasons for burning wood are greed and vindictive hate for other people. I am looking for a state where people have a life that is more then sitting around a fire drinking beer and eating a Costco size bag of chips. Does North Dakota have clean wood smoke free air anywhere in the state? Here is why we should all strive to live in smoke free locations! Smoke kills 60,000 U.S. Citizens a year; 3 million world wide. Respiratory illness is largest killer of infants. 4 People die daily in WA from Asthma attacks. Wood smoke is a major trigger. 1 in 10 children have Asthma. Infants who are exposed to wood smoke pollution early in life are 5 times more likely to be diagnosed with Asthma by age 5. Infants 17% increase in SIDS risk with wood smoke exposure. Asthma, COPD, Lung Cancer are increasing. 20-year study found that COPD patients are five times more likely to develop lung cancer. 80% of air pollution is residential indoor/outdoor wood burning; not traffic/industry. Dioxin from smoke most toxic substance on earth. Dioxin is passed from Mothers to infants. Wood smoke triggers heart attacks. 73% of wildfires are human caused not lightening. 53% of lives, acres, structures lost and cost to fight fires are from human caused fires. All wood burning aggravated/caused disease costs all of us billions in medical costs, we pay billions in taxes to fight human caused structure/wildfires and increased home/medical insurance premiums. We all pay for this problem. 1 in 2 deaths in the USA had COPD as a cause/contributor but 1 in 2 are NOT cigarette smokers. 120,000 people die each year from COPD. 4 people every minute. 550,000 hospitalizations per year, 16 million office visits per year, and $13 billion per year in medical costs, including home care. A recent study shows “At least 93 per cent of those who had COPD were not tobacco smokers,”. 23% of COPD occurs in age groups less than 40 years. It is not just an old persons disease. At least 12 million have undiagnosed COPD. Tobacco use is illegal in public places, yet Lung Cancer is the most prevalent, hardest to detect early and treat. It is the number one killer in the USA of all types of cancer. It is

Road Conditions - 5/18/2010

Out in the middle part of North Dakota roads are poorly maintained. I have seen numerous people miss up their alignment, hurt the bottom of their car, etc. due to unfixed pot holes in the middle of major cities like Bismarck.

the wind and the weather - 7/21/2008

I'm not from here, though I did move here, but this is not my best place to live. Too cold in the winter, too windy, and too sterile. No stores can open on Sunday till noon. Only certain dealers can sell liquer. The same is for drug stores. It's a bit too bland, though the people are nice and there is not much crime. Thanks Pam D

Best kept secret - 5/17/2008

I moved away from the Mpls/St.Paul area as the cost of living was too high in comparison to the wages. I easily make as much in North Dakota as I made in Mn. but the cost of living is much much better. If you like wide open spaces and a sense that you have gotten away from the rat race, this is the place to be. There are a few drawbacks. In western North Dakota, it is hard to find housing. There is a real housing crisis going on. The oil boom has made it hard to find anything to rent as many of the oil people have taken up the vast majority of available places to rent. Also the cost of living has gone up some because of the oil as well. Industry is good and I guess it is a nice problem to have there be more jobs than can be supported by the communities for a place to live concidering that jobs are harder to come by in many other places. The people are laid back and see the world in a no-nonsense sort of way. It is kind of like stepping back in time coming here. I have learned to always have cash on hand or my check book as some places do not accept a check card. One place where I orded food thinking I would be able to pay by card had no problem letting me get my food and come back with cash a few days later. That would not happen in the Twin Cities unless it was family that owned the place. I have to do alot of driving living in a rural area for shopping and work. Nothing is close by. So far I am still much further ahead even with the gas prices as they are. Over all I am very glad I made this move. My daughter has always dreamed of having a horse and now she has one. It is being boarded out at a friends place until we get our own place. There is plenty of opportunity for country living here. Again, the housing piece is the only real problem. I am lucky to have friends here that have provided a place for us to be until I can find something. In the end it would be sad to have to leave a good job and lifestyle I love all because I couldn't find a place to live in the school district the kids are in.

If you are even thinking about moving to Bismarck - 6/25/2006

I am going to make this easy for you yes' and no's will tell you whether you belong here. Do you think low breastfeeding rates are good? thats one point for north dakota if you say yes you don't care iif it is is one of only four remaining states that refuse to pass any laws or bills protecting breastfeeding women from being charged with indecent exposiore or being forced to serve jury duty they tried to pass one against breastfeeding women but, thankfully it was thrown out. Do you think a lack of non-church related activities for children isa good thing? another point for bismarck, seeing as there are literally no activities that are not related to a church in north dakota for children under 21 other then drinking and suicide: #2 highest rate for suicide fatalities ages 10-14 in the NATION #6 highest rate for suicide fatalities ages 15-19 in the NATION! "Statistics show that North Dakota is number one in the COUNTRY in underage drinking" As stated by our First Lady!! Oh wait I forgot tobacco, High school students who smoke cigarettes 22.1%. I could probably say more but, I'm at a loss for words right now. I would just say to those out there with families enter with cation as this state is FAR from family friendly. Also I would like to add that disabled services are miserable in this state so if you or anyone you know is disabled/ handicapped in any way go elsewhere. trust me. If you are low income expect everyone to look down on you. If you are a single parent, same story. Even worse if you are an unmarried couple residing together you are ILLEGAL in our state! Isn't this enough reason to run away while you can!?
