Hughes takes up a large area of central Oklahoma receiving status following statehood on 1st October 1907 with Holdenville becoming founded shortly afterwards serving as the county seat while extra small towns like Calvin, Dustin and Wetumka adorn its 2 900 km² (1120 sq mi). Figures taken by the United States Census Bureau estimates put Hughes' population estimate at 14 044 individuals; giving Hughes nevertheless classification among those counties functioning amongst Oklahomas more heavily populated regions .
