| 11/2/2012 | parent | As a parent of four children, two who have attended this school at different times and one that is now presently attending, i say this hesitantly but i have noticed that the school tries to enforce civillity with a militaristic style; students are quickly castigated for any minor infraction with detention. I do understand that the frequency of unruly behaviour quadruples in the early teenage years and they must be guided. But can positive feedback be implemented as well? The ELA curricullum concerns me as well; it seems a bit superficial. I question the depth of what is being learned when my child has the exact ELA homework daily. ARe they incorporating common core to their academics? |
| 9/30/2012 | parent | Although my daughter had a wonderful experience throughout her 3 years at 194, my son was absolutely miserable. He hated going to school, he came home with headaches and was failing 2 of his classes. I went into the school and spoke to guidance counselors and assistant principals to discuss his progress and I was told they would speak to the teachers and we should "stick it out", don't be so quick to make changes to teachers he isn't happy with. I also called to speak to the principal, he wasn't available and I left a message. I never heard back from him. Meanwhile, many parents I spoke to were having the same issues with the same teachers. We left the school and thankfully he is very happy in his new junior high. His self esteem was definitely affected because of his experience at 194. I blame the teacher and the administration for not making changes. There are many teachers in 194 that are Excellent, and go above and beyond the scope of being a teacher! On the otherhand, there are a few that need to be replaced. I understand the principal has been replaced this year. I hope the new principal can make the changes needed to the teaching staff. |
| 1/30/2012 | other | I am a former student of this school and have witnesses the terrifying structure that plagues this school first hand. Every day at this junior high school seems like a war zone from fights breaking out in and out of the school walls, to teachers turning a blind eye to slipping grades and social conflicts developing around them. The most terrifying thing about this school is knowing that although your child is in a school surrounded by teachers, principles, deans, security guards, est. they are as safe as being thrown in to a lion s cage. the academic achievements of this school is not due to any outstanding teacher student relationship but instead a result of its location, because the school is located in higher income area many of the children attend after school programs/tutoring which directly reflects the students grades. It is truly a shame that at this day and age the only way to give our children a proper education is to abandon our local public schools and opting for private schooling. |
| 11/22/2011 | other | I am a current student in the school (7th grade) , and I feel that the school provides good education. Even advanced classes (for sixth grade, the advanced classes are 621 and 622. For 7th and 8, the advanced classes end in 21, 21, and 23. For example, my class 721and my friend's class 821.) the teachers are highly experienced in what they do. My only complaint is that when someone is tormented, the take no action. |
| 7/15/2011 | parent | My child had a great experience in this school. So to the two complaining parents: 1. Your child Was the problem. 2. Maybe education is not a priority in your home. 3. Thanks for the transfer, although now your child becomes a problem in another school. Take care! |
| 7/7/2011 | parent | My daughter's experience with this school has been wonderful. In her 2 years here, she has had many great teachers that love their students, love their jobs and find creative ways of teaching. My daughter enjoys being in school and she's having fun while she's learning. My son is starting the 6th grade in September, he's heard so many great things from my daughter and can't wait. |
| 7/6/2011 | parent | I Had To Transfer My Daughter From This School Because Of Many Reasons. The School Has Lots Of Fights Its Almost Daily. Staff Especially Deans Are Very Disrespectful To The Students And Give Out Lots Of Detentions And Suspensions For Silly Things. The Teachers Are Sometimes Too Strict So They Put Lots Of Pressure On Students. In Academics, The School Does Ok But My Child Showed No Interest In Academic Subjects As If The Teachers Taught It Boringly. |
| 2/24/2011 | parent | This school may have a high academic rating which is great but it is run like a Juvenile Detention Center and the Deans, Asst. Principles and Principle of this school show no respect for their students needs and I was very happy to remove my son from this school to a happier environment. On the upside, the parent co-ordinator was wonderful. |
| 10/14/2010 | teacher | The Instructors really care about their students. |
| 10/13/2010 | parent | William H. Carr has a wonderful, loving school environment. There are great teachers who love their job and go the extra mile to teach their students. On top of that we have great kids who enjoy learning. |
| 10/13/2010 | teacher | Great co-workers and administration |
| 10/13/2010 | teacher | I love being able to interact with students who are mostly good and really try to do what s expected of them. Plus my coworkers are great! |
| 4/27/2010 | parent | excelent school, principal is on top of things, so are most of the teachers |
| 12/9/2009 | student | 194 is an awsome school. i wish it was rated a 5 star. i used to be a lazy student that hated school alot. when i came in 194 my brained awakend.they use activities and games to make learning fun |
| 3/20/2009 | parent | Excellent middle school. My daughter's transition to this school has far exceed my expectations. She speaks very highly of her teachers and the administration. Everyone I have spoken to from principal, vice principal, parent coordinator, guidance, nurse and teachers have been truly professional and caring. The programs and courses they offer are excellent. It is a wonderful learning environment. My daughter and her friends say it feels like a home away from home. They have great relationships with all their teachers and feel very safe and protected. JHS 194 is a great middle school, don't have any doubts or think you could find any better, you can't! |
| 10/1/2008 | parent | My son just entered 6th grade and I could not be any happier with what I see; dedicated happy teachers, a parent coordinator that actually helps, an assistant vice principal that gave a nervous mother sound, wonderful advice. Our old school was a nightmare, I am thankful for JHS 194! |
| 9/8/2008 | parent | My daughter's first day in Junior High the organization was impressive! the principal outside answering questions to all the worried parents and to the kids. She was so approchable I am so happy my daughter is attending this school! |
| 4/29/2008 | parent | Junior High School 194 is such a great school! I really recomend this school to anybody. They help my son with every problem he faced. Excellent people working there. Thank you |
| 11/17/2007 | other | I have attended this school before I moved, and I think its the best school I went to, so far. The enviroment is clean, the teacher quality is sky high, and their electives are superb. There were no stuffy lunchrooms or classrooms, or crowded hallways. Sometimes we get a little treat like a concert from a famous singer or a news anchor doing a report here. This school felt like family, not teacher and student, but like old friends. I felt very safe, and very welcomed. |
| 1/31/2007 | parent | My son goes to this school. It is a great school. We love it. |
| 2/3/2006 | parent | My fourth child is attending jhs 194 and i am extrememly happy with the direction the school is taking. The administration previous to this one was abysmal and i had explored options for my child to attend other middle school programs. Ms. Iannizzi began in september 2003 and immediately brought well needed change to the building. I love the concept of 'houses' within the building and the very close realtionship of everyone on my child's 'team'. They truly know my child and what academic help he needs. I do wish there was foreign language in 7th grade and the opportunity to take a science or math regents in 8th grade ( my three older children attended 194 in the 90's and all left 8th grade with 2years of spanish and the earth science & sequential i regents done. Strong parent involvement which provides extras to the students. Great school going in a great direction. |
| 12/5/2005 | parent | I can't say enough about this school. The Principal leads a motivated, energetic team of strong deans and teachers. My daughter had as seamless a transition into junior high as I could have hoped for, largely because of the care that the school takes to provide a safe, productive, creative learning environment. This year the Principal implemented small learning communities (students have a schedule of classes all on one floor) which I think has been a great success. And the Guidance Counselling staff has been invaluable in their support and guidance to my daughter as she went through the process of applying for high schools. The band program (includes an extracurricular jazz band) and drama programs are especially amazing. A+ |
