Family Friendly and great Schools! - 8/26/2020

I lived here in Virginia near the Cedar Rd. not so far from Tidewater Community college. If you want a great place to live to raise children, its Chesapeake Va.

Family friendly and we've got the beach, that's it - 3/29/2020

I live around this area currently, in the "Hampton Roads". Which consists of Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton, and Chesapeake. We're all "one big family" and connected in a way. With that being said, there's not a lot to do here, most people go to the beach, or a water/amusement park, and....thats it. The traffic is pretty bad, housing and rent is a little on the expensive side, there's ALWAYS road work, which makes traffic even worse, on the plus side though, it's pretty family friendly here, the schools are pretty good, nice-ish weather with little natural disasters, big military presence if that's your thing. Me personally, I'm moderately considering moving out of here, but it's not THAT bad. I'm just not a beach person AT ALL, and not too big about the military either, nor a big water park person, which drastically limits my recreational activity choices. I plan on doing some traveling/ city searching soon, but I might stay here.

Chesapeake has Little to Offer - 10/7/2018

I was born in Hampton Roads and lived there for more than 65 years. We lived in the city of Chesapeake for three years from 2014-2017. Frankly, we were very glad to finally leave there. There were more minuses than pluses. While the winters are generally mild with little snow, the summers are hot and very humid. Housing prices are high compared to wages, which are relatively low. There is only one Fortune 500 company headquartered in Hampton Roads and very few good employers, beyond federal jobs or hospitals. Chesapeake is largely a suburban community, with many new neighborhoods being built. Unfortunately, city planning is poor and neighborhoods are being built before the roads are improved to accommodate the increased traffic. As a result, traffic is terrible and worsening. Increasingly, the city is putting tolls on roads to pay for construction. Unlike Norfolk or Chesapeake, there are very few good locally owned and operated restaurants. There are very few places to go to enjoy nature. Very few people would consider vacationing in Chesapeake unless they have family there.

Do not move here if you do not have a car - 2/18/2014

I moved to Chesapeake in 2011 after living my whole life in New York City. It is one of the biggest mistakes that I have ever made. The city is not good for pedestrians. A lot of streets do not have any sidewalks. There is no train unless you count the tiny toy cars of the lightrail which only runs in Norfolk AND NOT in Chesapeake! Many buses stop running after 6pm which makes it impossible for workers who work at night to take them. Most buses only run every hour. Bus transfers are horrible whenever the first bus is late.

CHESAPEAKE and VIRGINIA are MORE THAN BORING !!! - 12/25/2013

I came to this city almost a year ago, and I am just waiting for my lease to expire so I can move far away from this city and State as possible. Holidays are INCREDIBLY BORING. Absolutely nothing is open on holidays for the enjoyment of families. Even the churches are closed on Christmas eve and Christmas Day. I tour around the entire city allowed me to notice something amazing: more people decorated their homes for Halloween, but a tiny number of homes have been decorated for Christmas. Schools may be good, but they are not as good as some people may think. I wish I could win the powerball or the mega, so I could careless of how much it will cost me to get out of here with my family.

Chesapeake is a very nice area - 8/11/2013

Unless you are in South Norfolk part of Chesapeake....that is downtown and some areas are dangerous. The rest of Chesapeake is a very large area. It is conveniently located near Va Beach, Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. There's plenty of activities to do for locals and tourists alike. Replying to what somebody else stated--it is not a racist area. Maybe they are racist....but I live here and know it isn't.

BORING....NOT NEIGHBOR FRIENDLY - 1/17/2013

I am 64, have lived in many places...Jamaica, W.I. Wyoming, PR, Phoenix, AZ, NYC, NJ, Wyoming, Georgia, SC, Upstate, NY, Utah, Springfield, Mass, .....this kis the boringest, unfriendliest city/towns and neighborhoods ever. Of course youm may find an exception or two, but that is rare. Many people out here promise to contact you and stay in touch, that more than quickly proves to be false. Unless you need to move hre, do yourselves a favor, DO NOT.

Living in Chesapeake - 10/21/2011

I decided to live in Chesapeake due to being stationed here back in 1995 and have called it home ever since. When I got out of the Navy in 1997 I had the choice of moving back to Philly (which I love dearly) or to my exhusbands small unevolving hometown outside of Houston. There wasn't any debate, Chesapeake is where we would raise our children and it was the best decision we made. Although it is considered a city, it is more like a large suburan area with access to any of the other 6 cities which are nearby. In as much as 15 minutes I can be in either Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk or even NC. Not to mention you are minutes away from the beach and Bush Gardens, Water Country, the Williamsburg outlet are 45 mins to an hour away. If you are looking for the feel of the city, Chesapeake in not the place you want to be but if you are looking for quality housing with yard space and not hear your neighbors kids run up the steps then this in your locality. Unlike Virginia Beach, many of the homes in Chesapeake are single family and have adaquate yard space with ample size rooms. Many of the communities are mix where you might find a $1M+ home development not far from low income housing, but low income housing does not look like what it sounds. Our police department is no-nosense and doesnt tolerate BS. I personnally believe that our school system is the best in the area and recently scored a 90% on-time graduation rate for those student who entered in the 9th grade (VA Pilot Online). Our Parks & Rec program is pretty good but could use some improvement but it is not something one would complain out. Chesapeake is a very young city, less than 50 years old and has a lot of growing to do with its services for its residents. Meadian age of a residence is 30 - 45, people who work and want to raise their families some place nice. The only problem I have with the city is that there aren't enough sidewalks and poor bus service so you have to drive everywhere you need to go.

Chesapeake, VA is a very boring place to live or v - 8/17/2011

I've lived in Chesapeake for the past four years. I have lived in several other states and can honestly say that Chesapeake is by far the most boring area I have ever been to. There is nothing about the area that makes it unique or interesting. I live in what is considered by most locals to be "the best and most affluent area of Chesapeake." Other than the public schools which are pretty good in Hickory, what is so great about this place? There is virtually nothing interesting to see or do. This includes the people, restaurants, shopping and architecture. Very generic. The people in Chesapeake, as well as all of Hampton Roads seem almost robotic. They lack facial expressions and all have very similar personalities. Not to mention are quite rude. It's almost creepy. I feel like i'm in the twilight zone. Has anyone else noticed this?

Traffic-Yuuk!!! - 1/17/2010

This area for its relative size has the worst traffic. the numerous bridges and tunnels, military base traffic and tourists keep traffic in this region highly unpredictable and downright frustrating. Traveling west from the area to Richmond and D.C. on a weekend or during a holiday can be a nightmare. I will not miss the traffic or personal property/automobile taxes when I retire and move from here.

Hampton Roads is a nice place to live, but Chesapeake is a very populated area and more and more houses are being built. Chesapeake has a pretty good school system. They just built a new High School which has a lot of modern conveniences.

Ready to move from Chesapeake Va - 6/5/2009

Chesapeake Va has been a nice place, but recent increase in home prices, taxes, Traffic congestion has made us think of moving. Pros for Chesapeake: Good employment opportunites, not to far from beaches, close to rural Virginia. Cons for Chesapeake: Traffice Condestion (City of Chesapeake has not developed roads to support the increase in housing), High Real Estate Taxes, Property Taxes on Vehicles.

Climate in Chesapeake - 9/13/2007

It is really wonderful here. A little warm in the summer, but proximity to the ocean keeps the breezes coming. Everything is very flat, so put the sleds away (not much snow anyway)and get out the bicycles.
