idk - 6/19/2021

I was born and raised here (still currently live here) and there are some nice areas and not so nice areas. I really think we need to improve our community and create better environments for low income individuals (which is a lot of people here). I don't have anywhere else to compare us to because I haven't lived anywhere else. Like everywhere, there's good and bad. It gets really hot in the summer.

Decent - 4/30/2021

It's fine. Lived here for over 10 years. Here's my breakdown. CONS: Crime rate: mostly on the westside, unless you live in better developed areas. Summer weather: summers can get over 100° Homelessness/dirty: you see both on the freeway and through town. Drugs: depending where you live, you can smell marijuana pretty frequently. PROS: Winter weather: unlike summer, winters are mild here and not horribly bad. Entertainment: Decent amount of stuff to do, could be better though. The mall, Boomers, Funworks, Regal and Brenden Theaters, McHenry mansion. Food: Craving frozen yogurt? Check out Yogurt Mill. Donuts? Check out Mr. TS Donuts. Craving (fake) coffee? There's a guarantee that's there's a Starbucks around each corner. Boba? There's places for that too. All in all, if you live here you would be satisfied enough but not amazed.

In A Teen's Perspective... - 11/5/2020

I know this website is probably only for adults, which I am not, but I thought perhaps adults would like to hear a kid's perspective of things, you know, if any adult here has kids and is wondering how Modesto is. I've lived here since I was around 2 or 3 and generally think this place is pretty great! The school environment is okay, depending on which schools you live near. I recommend Prescott Junior High and Gregori High School, and perhaps Mary Lou Dieterich Elementary, too. Anyway, you've got to check out Mr. T's Donuts (rated 4.8 stars)- they're so delicious! And Red Robin down in Riverbank (rated 4 stars). Regal Modesto is a fun place to go, and so is the McHenry Mansion and the McHenry Museum (where, btw, at Christmas-time has kids playing instruments for two nights). There's a skatepark near Beyer High School and Boomers and Fun Works too. If you're into the music scene, there's these two places that I know of where you can get lessons for different instruments. Modesto Academy for Music and Design (also provides Lego and robotics classes, art, and drama) and Langlois Music Co Inc (4.3 stars). The neighborhood around the schools listed, especially the elementary school, is really good. Where I live is peaceful too, which I hear is different from downtown. I will also say that there seems to always be a kid missing over here for some reason. All in all...10/10 would recommend for peaceful life. Thank chu for ur time, have a wonderful day! ^^

Its alright! - 6/29/2017

I was born and raised in Modesto. Lived here for 20 + years. This town is alright. Summer gets way too hot reaching 115 degrees sometimes while winter will hit us with the low 30's. Dry summers and recently we had some heavy rain this year. The people here are ok. Lots of diversity. Lots of Latinos/Hispanics which shows off California's growing population. Asians and Blacks even out as well. Home prices are modest compared to other cities in California. 250k will get you a nice home. Schools are not the best to be honest. Do not have nice things to say about any of them. I don't feel students are encouraged as much. Surrounding cities such as Ceres and Turlock probably have better school districts. Junior College does produce great students. Great place to go with great professors. Has given many people chances such as first generation students or adults who trying to get their degrees. Pretty religious. Churches are on every corner. Couple of Temples here and there as well. I'd say the politics are Moderate. They don't stick out though. If you are pretty liberal you'll fit in. Not a radical city but its definitely open to ideas. Our newspaper has produced many left leaning articles so its starting to represent a growing population in our city. Conservatives won't be ousted. Lots of country for those who lean towards the right. Crime and drugs are kind of bad according to our statistics. I personally have never witnessed any crazy incidents but you'll constantly read about drug busts, violent events, or bodies being found. Again, the people I know have never witnessed such things. And most folks around here think its a generally safe town to raise a family in. I've lived in bad neighborhoods, modest neighborhoods, and upper class neighborhoods. Never felt unsafe staying out at night shooting some hoops with friends or playing soccer on any of those streets. Downtown has definitely improved since I was young. New hip restaurants aimed at young adults have opened up. Area around the Movie Theatre and Gallo Center are constantly getting updated so thats a bright spot in the city. There are things to do, you just have to go out and look for them. You will definitely find some cool food spots. Modesto is alright. Its right in the middle of Sacramento/San Francisco/ Yosemite/Fresno. The mountains are an hour away and the beach is an hour and a half away. You can head out and come back in the same day. Not a great place to visit but an OK place to live. There are certain days during Fall or Spring that Modesto's odd beauty really shows. I don't wish I was born anywhere else. But I do plan on moving lol. I will definitely come back tho. Shout out to the boy George Lucas on the real man.

A town with lots to offer - 12/17/2016

Modesto Ca is a place that offers quite a bit. Lots of cultural opportunities, like the Gallo Center, Mchenry Museum. Fun activities plenty of parks and a safe place to raise a family. I have lived here for over 20 years and would not trade it. Leo - modestoCAonline.com

A Modesto resident's impressions: - 1/24/2015

Hi...I've lived in Modesto for ~16years and live in a newer middle class neighborhood. Shopping for lifes necesities is convienent to most neighborhoods, schools all over the city are improving and your child can get a good education, even though, as in any city, some schools are better than others. The cost of living is very good in Modesto/& Central Valley and one can buy a 'mansion-like-home' for half$ of what they sell-for in many other California cities. The residential neighborhoods are populated with diverse cultures and residents experience difficulty in finding common ground or bonding with neighbors to organize and address issues of neighborhood crime, juvenal delinquents etc. For the most part, residents stick to themselves and there immediate families and simply live life as they feel is best for them, with little interference from local Police and with little consideration for their fellow neighbors or others outside their family or culture. The professionals in this city are mediocre, at best, yet one must pay premium prices for sub-standard services. In many parts of the city there are pan-handlers begging for spare change who are quick to incite a fight, although this is improving. If this type of life is appealing to you, then Modesto would be a comfortable, affordable place for you to live and raise a family.

Jobs - 3/6/2012

Like most central valley towns, things were great here doing the housing market boom. We are now suffering with too many foreclosures and lost jobs that were based upon the housing market.

Word of advice for all you idiots who are paying too much in the Bay Area and have the brilliant idea of moving here and then commuting to the Bay Area for your job: don't do it if you don't know anybody here. We hate hippies.

Once upon a time... - 6/9/2010

I returned here for a temporary, 9 month stay after 25 years: Modesto has mushroomed almost beyond recognition, and certainly doesn't feel the same! I had wonderful friends here, a great education, and opportunities unique to this area (music education, GREAT church, ease of employment, etc.) as a youth. As a "forty-something visitor", it feels like I need to "part my way through" traffic, more crowded conditions, and what seems to be a low-grade "general demise" (which I have to say is nearly everywhere, now)!!! I love my city - still; but I wouldn't want to relocate here without an upgraded change (for the better), and a heightened sense for community here, etc... Sigh :(

Hot as Heck - 4/19/2009

Modesto has one of the worst summer climates I've ever lived in. I don't mind warm weather, but I can't deal well with 100+ degrees for long periods of time. It's only April, and we're already slated to climb to 100 degrees tomorrow! I'm going to try to look for a more mild climate.

Growing up in Modesto... - 10/9/2008

I was born in modesto in 1990. I am currently 18 years old. I have lived in Modesto for the first 14 years of my life. I have moved to Fresno, but plan on moving back. Certain neiborhoods are bad, certain are very respectable. I grew up in a neirborhood which had award winning schools (not crowded) and had neirbors who watched everyones back. Modesto is a wonderful place to live or raise a family. You just have to find the right neirborhood for you.

Don't Move To Modesto - 4/6/2008

I relocated my business to Modesto , This place is a Ghettos , You can't go anywhere with out being hit up for spare change . these people are everywhere in front of markets , gas stations , eatery's , basically anywhere you go in public you are hit on by one or more persons for spare change and it's annoying as hell .these people are probably making more money per day then I am . then you got the drugs , gangs , scrappers and run down neighborhoods . the Tuolumne river that runs through town is nothing more then a cesspool for the homeless .

Weather and lifestyle in Modesto - 7/11/2007

Like most of the weather in the central valley of California, Modesto is warm year round and hto in the summer. Just as Spain, we have dry/arid temperatures. What I like about the heat is spending time in downtown Modesto in the resturant/theater district in the summer evenings eating outdoors at a cafe and then enjoying a good movie. Later going to a bar/lounge and having a drink outside and watching people go by. I always feel safe downtown and the people of Modesto are pleasant and live life at a slower pace. Fred

Land locked. - 5/7/2007

This was a nice city 20 years ago. There has been a great amount of growth with very poor planning. The schools are over to small and to few. Crime is high and traffic is terrible around town. Don't even try to go to the Bay Area it is a mess all day long seven days a week. Housing cost went through the roof and are no dropping like crazy. The Hospitals are over run with illegals that do have not health coverage. Average wait time in a Emergency Care Unit is 10 to 12 hours. (not the illegals faulth as State of California took their benefits away but allow big business to profit from their hard work). Spanish is not a second language here. Many just speak Spanish and laugh at you for not being able to. Don't get me wrong the white crack addicts that sneak around this town are by far the worst people here. It's not a good place for a normal working family of any age to move to. Unless you speak Spanish or like houses built on top of each other. High unemployement and a great number of locals on government assistance. Gary
