| Gangs run the streets of Chattanooga: Beware!! - 3/12/2013
I moved to Chattanooga in 2002. Back then, Chattanooga had a gang problem but it has escalated dramatically in 11 years. Much of it has been attributed to hurricane Katrina, when a large number of those individuals moved here, many of them gang members. We saw an immediate rise in crime in our downtown area. We now have shootings every week, sometimes several times a week, sometimes several days in a row. We have drive-by shootings in which young children playing in their yards or even in their homes are shot. Or innocent people sitting on their porches are shot. We have had three police officers shot, two fatally. Forget about parking your car on the street. It won't last overnight. Not one night without getting broken into in the downtown area. I know. I live downtown. We have home invasions. I had to resort to getting a permit to carry a gun. Finally I decided enough. It's time to leave. My house just sold this week and I got a job out west. This is a beautiful part of the country and Chattanooga was a progressive town with many great features, but because the elected officials let the gangsters take control of the city many of its residents are fleeing. I fear Chattanooga will become what it was back in the 70's and 80's...a ghost town that rolled up the sidewalks at night because the crime then was terrible too. Only now it is worse. So beware to all of you who are considering coming here. The press covers up the truth about the level of crime here in Chattanooga. They fear tourists will stop coming if the truth gets out. But I am here to tell you the truth. If you have to come here for a job and you have no choice, get a house in Ooltewah, Hixson, or Collegedale. It's a commute in, but you and your family will be safe. Don't take any chance on living anywhere near this crime infested mess.[read more...]

| Private schools dominate the culture - 1/19/2013
Chattanooga is a beautiful location, with plentiful outdoor exercise and activity options. We have lived her for almost six years. The one thing we have not been able to adjust to is the predominance of private schools.
In a given neighborhood, you might have 10 families with similar-aged children and yet they may be going to 3 or even 4 different private schools. Given that a families social activities are largely influenced by the school's schedule, this often results in a lack of cohesiveness and unity within a given geographic neighborhood.
We have struggled to adjust to this dynamic and this prevents us from truly calling Chattanooga "home".[read more...]

| Living in Chattanoga.....? - 10/7/2012
Hi, we are a family of 5 recently moved from the worst place in the world, and I really find Chattanooga especially the East Brainerd area a wonderful place to live, beautiful views, nice city, jobs, friendly people, places to enjoy nature, all the services, good schools, public transportation, shopping, religion, activities; For one thing I could not help but notice that the City of Chattanooga encourages all kinds of family oriented activities...we can have it all! The only negative point I can see and I consider really inconvenient is the fact that two Interstates 75 and 24 run through much of the city which will make commuting very unsafe! Make sure you live as close as possible to your work place to the point of negotiating your priorities. Prices in general do not seem to be out of range, of course not everything is perfect, but what place is it?
I have lived in 2 countries, 6 different states and a lot of cities (big and small) in the last 10 years, I really think that If you are looking to race your family in a nice, relatively safe and friendly environment and you are tire of urban jungles and traffic jams Chattanooga is the place!

| Great city, but terrible for allergy sufferers - 5/16/2011
I have been living here for over a year. It is a great city and the people here are wonderful. The only problem that the city has is poor air quality due in part to high pollen counts. In the spring it is not uncommon to see people in the emergency room with asthma related problems caused by allergens in the air. Prior moving here I had mild allergies; however, after I moved here I have had severe allergies every spring with frequent trips to the emergency room. If you are considering moving here don't forget to take in consideration the air quality. You need clean air to breathe. I found airnow.gov helpful to help me monitor the air quality especially if I plan on spending alot of time outdoors. In addition, I have found pollen.com helpful to monitor the pollen counts. | There's no place I'd rather be than in Chattanooga - 6/30/2010
I was born and raised north of Chattanooga in Hixson, (which is now in the city limits). After I graduated from Hixson High I went in the Air Force and left Chattanooga. When I left (1979), downtown was seedy. There were many areas/neighborhoods you just didn’t venture after dark, especially in the downtown area. Over the yrs I lived in MS, MI, FL and NV. I've visited and spent time in every state in the Continental US including AK, plus Mexico and Canada. We lived in Las Vegas, NV for 26 yrs and decided it was time to leave that illegal immigrant, crime infested area about 2 yrs ago. We moved to the Chattanooga area in July 2009. I am amazed and so please to see the revitalization of the downtown area. There is so much to do here including many family friendly activities. In the downtown area there is a free admittance Farmer’s market (Chattanooga Market) that features local grown foods and goods from local craftsman and artisans, free concerts in the park (Nightfall), the Tennessee Aquarium, many eateries, including local owned and national franchises. There are shows including concerts, theater production, symphony orchestra and art exhibits. The rich history is intertwined with outdoor recreation in areas such as the Riverwalk (an 8+ mile walking, jogging, bike route from Ross’s Landing downtown to the TVA’s Chickamauga Dam which dams the TN River north of the city. Each year the city is host to a 9-day, 5 stage, 100+ band music festival called Riverbend. Riverbend 2010 saw acts such as Alison Krause, Billy Currington, Darius Rucker and Charlie Daniels. Most places you’d pay $50 per person (or more) to see just one of those acts. Entrance to Riverbend for the whole 9 days, cost $30 and you could see those acts AND some 95+ others for that one admission charge! That’s value for your entertainment dollar!! The city as a whole is friendly, health and green environment minded. The air, water and city as a whole, is cleaner than during my childhood. Housing prices are reasonable for the area, cost of living and wages are a fair match. In the current economic environment, though the region has and is feeling the strain, all things considered the area seems to be fairing well. There really is no place I’d rather live than the Chattanooga area. In my opinion, the Convention & Visitor’s Bureau tag line “Chattanooga – A Great City by Nature!” is true![read more...]

| Air quality - 2/11/2010
As far as air quality you can't really complain.I lived in chicago, il for 20
years, its cleaner than most states, water quality is also much better. Thier is actually a noticable difference is how much clean the air, water ect. is from chicago. Now to talk bad about the city because its rated as one of the cleanes cities in the US. Crime in chattanooga is a joke, turn the news on in Chicago they can;t even report it all, PEOPLE say chattanooga is a high crime rate, thats because the news has nothing to report. ie, what news station reports the scores of minor league baseball games, really come on. What crime?
As far jobs where should I start the average income,Average male here 34,000 in chi,il 38,000 o Unemployment chat,tn 8.6 chi, il 11.0% Cost of living much lower in fact its crazy when you compare the two, Now schools Chicagp public school(your kid might get killed going here)the worst in the country. | Info not correct - 1/29/2010
In 2008 Chattanooga's population was estimated @ 170,880. According to this website it states 2009 has an estimated population of 169,884. As a resident of Chattanooga I don't see how the population could decline. We've had many new multi unit apt complexes built, many houses, many townhomes/condos, etc.. I don't even know where this population info came from because 2009 isn't even on the Census' website. I'll wait until the end of 2010 to find out the TRUE population which I know will bust 182K people in the city. Maybe even more due to Volkswagen.[read more...]

| Best city I've ever been - 9/17/2009
Hello, I moved to Chattanooga TN from Milwaukee WI 7 mo. ago and love this city. It's clean, lower crime rate than I'm use too. The downtown is beautiful and a nice place to vist. Chattanooga is a mid sized city with a small southern town feel I love. It feels very community orintated, I've read some posts about chattanooga with people saying the traffic is bad theres alot of crime and its a dirty city. I'm not sure if there even talking about the right city. In milwaukee there a 100+ murders a year same with Chicago and Detroit, Chattanooga has less that 20. The mountain veiws you can find around the city are great, Some people just dont know how good they have it. I planed on moving around the south and seeing some new things but I think I just might stay. We just bought a puppy and love the dog parks,Lil bbq places that have the best food you can find and the people are freindly.[read more...]

There are a lot of great things to say about Chattanooga; climate and cost of living are good. We have found there is too much emphasis on church here, and religion is over the top. You see billboards for doctors with "christian compassion" and prayer enters meetings at my husband's office. It is a bit over the top for us. Most people are Baptist and happy to recruit the non-believers.[read more...]

| A Great Place To Live - 3/2/2009
Chattanooga is a nearly ideal place to live. There is something for everyone, at any age. There is wonderful mix of both active and passive pursuits and activities. The arts and culture community is a vital, active part of the quality of life. There is an increasingly greater focus on environmental awareness and "living green". We enjoy four(4)full seasons with the variety of scenery and climate change that entails. If one does not like humidity, then the summer season would be unpleasant. Chattanooga is also easily accessible to and from four other major cities, all within a two hour drive. This city is consistently highly ranked as one of the most desirable places to live.[read more...]

| Chattanooga - 2/27/2009
I have lived in Chattanooga for about two years now and we will be moving whenever possible. She gets nauseated when outside during the summer for more than about thirty minutes or whenever in the car for the same amount of time. The city has made great improvements in air/water quality over the last thirty years but the effects are still felt. A few months ago the local paper ran an article that some scientist had been studying the relation of air/water quality in the area and compared it to birth weights of infants and several parts of the city had noticeably lower birth weights than the national average due to the long term affects of pollutants in the area.
In addition to smog the job market is horrible. Either drive a truck or work in nursing, otherwise $12/hr is the best you are going to do even with a College Degree.
Also, track is terrible with no real mass transit to speak of.
One last thing, Chattanooga has the worst crime rate of any place I have ever lived. Someone is shot or murdered near daily, and some parts of town you just do not go through, as told to me by multiple city police officers.[read more...]

| Chattanooga Tennessee A Great Place To Live - 2/21/2009
My wife and daughter moved to Chattanooga with me about 10 years ago. We absolutely love it here. There is a great variety of movie theaters including an Imax and The Rave, besides having The Tennessee Aquarium, besides art festivals, a jazz festival, wine tastings across the walking bridge, beer festivals, saturday evening outdoor movies in the park, live music downtown every friday night where my family and I have watched big name bands play without charge, besides having the one week long River Bend Festival (www.riverbendfestival.com) besides the beautiful and clean parks and one with a large operating carousel handcrafted here in Chattanooga, besides the art district downtown open all year featuring a variety of art, besides the new multi-billion dollar Volks Wagon plant being built here at Enterprise South creating thousands of new jobs, besides all the various locally owned restaurants and other small shops downtown where thousands of people go to spend their afternoon and evening relaxing and taking in the scenery, besides having large rivers where hundreds of boaters, water skiers, fishing enthusiasts and others enjoy water activities during the summer, besides having one of the largest malls in Tennessee, besides having Rock City and Ruby Falls major tourist attractions, besides the Incline Railroad which takes sightseers up Lookout Mountain from where you may view seven different states I would say that it is very factual there is more to do and see in Chattanooga Tennessee than most other cities anywhere in the world and this list is just scratching the surface.[read more...]
