I completely agree with the review from BigD that the people here have an entitlement I have not quite encountered elsewhere having lived in plenty of big cities throughout my life. I also agree that unless you have a family, this is no place to be. It's expensive, unless you are a local or went to UVA you will have difficulty finding a niche, there are things to do but, they are expensive, and for what you are paying in housing and general cost of living, just live in DC. Do yourself a favor. Plus, if you get anywhere out of town, you are surrounded by one of the clannish backwoods tribes (the police won't even go to some of the back areas) of Appalachia. There are MUCH better places to live, don't waste your time, money or self esteem on this place.

Saying I live in Charlottesville is a little bit o - 2/12/2011

I've lived in Virginia my whole life. After attending school in Richmond and beginning my professional life there (VCU, Virginia Museum), I moved to Charlottesville in then early eighties. My husband and I are not wealthy people, but we've worked hard and built a wonderful life for ourselves here. Over the years, we've considered opportunities to move back to the Tidewater area, where the lifestyle was more affordable. Honestly, and even though we do miss the water, we never gave t serious thought. We agonized a little more over a career move to the Northern Virginia area, because the money would have been so much better. In both cases, we ultimately opted for staying in Charlottesville for the quality of life it affords us. We live in Albemarle County, which is 750 square miles surrounding tiny Charlottesville. Though I moved here in my mid-twenties from a rockin' life in Richmond and resented the pedestrian-ness of the place in the eighties, that really has changed. The availability of good music, food, theater, and recreation is pretty astounding, really. I'm sorry that certain commenters on this page think the town is "full of itself". I think they just got in with people with whom they do not share a commonality. Personally, having been raised in Virginia, I do enjoy a certain level of comfort here, and I really like the big-fish-in-little-ocean ambiance. There are a lot of highly-educated people always moving in and out of the area, thanks to the University of Virginia. Also, the area is dripping in historical significance, and I do believe that sort of environment attracts a different sort of person, and that person doesn't want the city of new suburban sort of lifestyle. We're really lucky that there is a significant contingent of people who want to restrain development in the area, who hope that we can retain the rural character that does still exist outside of the city-proper. Speaking of the city-proper... it can be a very cool place to live, but I do think it warrants a little sophistication. Charlottesville, the city, is a tiny microcosm of a larger city. Cool restaurants that aren't cheap, art film theaters, great live theater, some very cool bands, etc, along with... and then, there's the bad stuff that you find in cities, like the projects and a concentration of crime, mostly larceny. I just don't think it's realistic to believe we could have all of the amazing lifestyle qualities and avoid some of the bad. We had opportunities to leave, and we could certainly consider leaving when we retire, but we can't think of any good reason to do so.[read more...]

Charlottesville Virginia Horse Country - 2/11/2011

If horses and riding are your passion, Charlottesville and the surrounding area is the perfect place to live. The gently rolling countryside provides an excellent setting for a horse farm and is a delight to ride through. The majestic mountains of Virginia, crisp fall breezes, locally owned and operated wineries, and luxury accomodations at some of the finest bed and breakfasts are just a few of the things that you'll experience when you visit Charlottesville, Virginia. Charlottesville is amazing but expensive - 3/8/2010

Charlottesville is your typical university town - only with a few extras. We have the academic cultural items, plus a art scene. The bar and nightlife are beginning to finally show signs of life besides just places for college students. The area has amazing natural beauty and lots to do out of doors... so why am I leaving? - As young professional starting out, the real estate prices and lack of affordable housing are forcing me out of the area. Arrogance thy name is Charlottesville - 9/25/2008

The people here have a rare arrogance, so much so, that even transplanted New Yorkers are taken aback. There is an undercurrent of hostility in this town that can be found in every business. The people working in the service industry seem very unhappy and hostile. Considering the cost of living here, that is no surprise.[read more...]

Yes, Virginia there is crime in Charlottesville - 9/25/2008

Many people move to this town of approx. 40,000 and believe there is no crime here. Nothing could be further from the truth. While violent crime is an irregular occurence, drug and gang activity is very high. There have been identified no less than six operating drug gangs here. We also have our very own FBI office despite the small size of the town. It is possible to live a relatively safe life in Charlottesville, but be aware that danger does indeed exist here. It has a way of popping up when you least expect it. If you're in downtown Charlottesville and visiting the famous open mall, exercise caution, especially late at night.[read more...]

Cost of Living in Charlottesville - 6/22/2008

As one moves closer towards the University of Virginia, the cost of living increases, more notably with respect to real estate and rental rates, which is to be expected due to increased demand. The job situation is interesting, in that there are a number of quite highly educated individuals ready and willing to work for lesser wages. These "university transients" are looking for short term solutions and accept lower salaries as a result, possibly just to make ends meet. I feel that the median wage/salary in this area does not allow for much disposable income due to the higher cost of living.[read more...]

University Life - 10/23/2007

As a politically interested student at UVA, I am aware of how many extraordinary opportunities there are in Charlottesville to get politically involved and see significant speakers right here in town, despite living an hour from the state's capital, and two hours from Washington D.C. The proximity to Richmond and D.C. is also advantageous.[read more...]

Number one city....? - 9/4/2007

We moved here thinking it would be a great place to raise our new family. It is very expensive here. The city grew so fast that companies salaries do not compare to the cost of living. Housing is very expensive, a lot of hippies and transients in the city. Groceries are also very expensive compared to where we came from. The traffic is insane!! We avoided the DC area but it is just as bad here. It takes us 20 minutes to go 5 miles...no joke. More a good place for singles not families.[read more...]

Charlottesville- great place to live - 6/5/2007

I spent 6 years in charlottesville completing my graduate degree. Just moved to Southern California for my new job. I miss Charlottesville so much that it even hurts. Many people claim that Charlottesville is too expensive, but you get what you paid for there. I believe it's one of very few cities that offer not only great outdoors opportunities but also cultural activities. Plus, you're never stuck in traffic. Those who complain about Charlottesville traffic must have not seen traffic in large cities. Homes and apartments in charlottesville are not nearly as expensive as homes in any big city. Of course, Cville IS more expensive than other cities of 40,000 people. However, it's because this city is much more exciting than those cities, and so many people want to live in Charlottesville. One problem of Charlottesville is though, there aren't enough jobs there. I just think that UVa professors are so lucky. I would fly back to Charlottesville right away if I could do my current job in Charlottesville. I have heard many people saying that they are bored in Charlottesville because there is no night life: I cannot believe what they are saying. They must have no friends. When I was in Charlottesville, I had no problem finding things to do on any random day. If you look at the local newspapers (the cville or the book), you can find countless concerts etc.. every night. The local music scene is pretty good in cville. When I lived there, there were at least 5 concerts to choose from every night in that small area. It's better than the music scene in southern california (unless you live in the center of los angeles- otherwise, you have to drive hours to get to LA even though it's only less than 20 miles away, then look for a parking space forever, and pay 20 dollars for the parking space!). If possible, we would like to move back to charlottesville in the future.[read more...]

Nice, But Expensive - 5/7/2007

Charlottesville has a high quality of life, with lots of cultural and recreational amentities. Many nice restaurants, art galleries, hiking and biking trails and so on.
