Life in Naples - 10/7/2008

I agree with the others that the weather is fantastic in Naples, and they have very lovely beaches. With an average age of 62, it can get a little boring here. My experience with many elderly people in the past has always been that they are a friendly, kind population. Naples is strange in that the older population (in general) is snobby - we can't figure why. We suppose that most here are mid-westerners who are uneducated, sold the farm, and feel that they hit the big time buying a house in Florida, living on the golf course. Have never experienced this culture before. I agree with the comments about Marco Island. It is a very appealing place, and the people are younger and much friendlier. We haven't been to a decent restaurant yet after 3 months visiting. The comments about the bad restaurants have proven true.

Love It - 8/19/2008

Ok we've been here 4 months through the summer and love it. We have family in Ft. Myers to the north and have visited both in summer and winter and understand the traffic headaches. We moved from Las Vegas so even winter traffic here is NOTHING compared to Vegas ALL YEAR round. August of 2008, this is the time to find your affordable home close to the beach. We are not rich ourselves and have managed a 1500 sq/ft house 4 miles from the beach in a golfing community no less. So those who cannot find affordable homes now aren't looking or are having a tough time getting the loan, but the homes ARE here. Good luck.

Naples Ho Hum - 4/22/2008

Naples is a great place to retire, but can be a tough place to work. It's okay until "Season" when hordes of snowbirds clog the highways and byways. It's much better to live close to the beach, as that is the most fun. The suburbs may look good but being mostly bedroom communities they can be boring and isolating, especially in Season, when a 15 minute drive to the beach becomes 45 minutes. Also, it can be a dull town, not much live music and lites going out at 9 PM. The bars aren't very exciting, and the average age seems like 65. But the beaches are great, and if you don't have to work for a living; you'll probably love it.

I don't live yet in this city but have planned to move there and stay with some relatives, and hopefully find a job. So, I can't say very much about it at the moment.

Cost of Living - 1/1/2008

The city is beautiful and well maintained(streets are clean and landscaped). However it now seems to be nothing but strip malls and restaurants.Plus it will cost you to buy a house in this area.

Lifestyle - 1/1/2008

Naples has pretty much everything you need as resources and availability. It lacks a lot of family oriented activities and "township".

Meth problem is alive and well in Naples - 12/3/2007

I lived in Naples for 4 years. It does have a very picturesque downtown, beautiful beaches, but it is a Tale of 3 Cities: the haves, the wannabes and the havenots. The haves live in the million dollar mansions, the wannabes are all old retirees who like to think that living in a rich area or playing golf somehow gives them status, and the havenots mostly into drugs - crystal meth is everywhere in this town and though the police are vigilant its everywhere. The wannabes make up housing association rules to make life homogenous and as boring as themselves. If you have dogs - forget it - they are not well tolerated. So, not a great place to live unless u are insulated by money.

80 is the Magic Number in Naples - 8/9/2007

If you are 80 years old, have 80 million dollars, love to be in 80 degree weather with 80 percent humidity, and shoot an average of 80 on the golf course, then head on down I-75 to beautiful Naples, Florida. Here, you will be in your own little world of overpriced restaurants, real estate and shoppes. Drape yourself in tacky clothes, place your teacup Yorkie under your arm, then go for a stroll down Fifth Avenue with your nose high up in the air. Just be sure to look down once in a while, so your Christian Louboutin shoes don't end up in poo courtesy of someone else's precious little doggie.

Overbuilt and traffic is a nightmare - 5/31/2007

There is so much overbuilding and the rush hour traffic is a nightmare, even out of season. And in season, all the retired snowbirds are on the roads during rush hour, so they can go to the early bird specials. There are very few access roads because of all the gated communities. All of the traffic is funneled onto just a few main roads. And all of the main roads are under construction, so lanes are closed etc. Very soon this place is going to look like Hialeah. (not good).

No night life in Naples - 5/31/2007

We have more police per capita than any city our size in the U.S. Ever since the Sheriff's Department decided to crack down on DUI (there is very little other crime here) the night life has deteriorated. Restaurants go out of business as soon as the Sheriff's Department starts staking out the parking lots and sending plain clothes cops into the bars. i.e. Bennigans, Houlihans, Ditka's, Magiero's, Michaels, etc. etc. It used to be fun here but now there is very little live music, no place to dance. If you're single and over 40 there is no place to go. The Generation Xers have taken over downtown Naples. And no matter what your age or marital status, there is no place to go after about 11 PM except maybe the Waffle House.

Not as bad as you hear.......... - 4/30/2007

Its the old addage Location, Location, Location ...................Yes the beach front is very expensive but coming back to reality, just west of I75 is very comparable to the North East or any major hub, West of I75 great value but lacking the 3 L. Insurance and Tax's are being handled, I do not have to tell you the weather is great all year and after 11 yrs in Florida, I left 3 times for hurricanes, Wilma's eye was approx. 5 miles south of my home town of Marco Island which is a great place to live.

Unaffordable for people who work. - 8/20/2006

I work in utilites here in Naples, FL. I go from the very poor to the very rich. The comments from 90 percent of the people are that they are very scared because the 'service' people can't afford to live here and leave. That is the very truth. They have very little affordable housing here, and that is a waste because the only people living there are people who dont work. So normal people who work normal jobs such as teachers, policeman, telephone, and homebuilders have nowhere to live. Try finding an apartment complex here that rents, there are'nt any. They've all sold to condos. I will give Naples a very peaceful place to live, low crime, and the weather is very nice. Summers are not even as hot as people complain, and the winters are seriously paradise. Coming from Indianapolis, where the summers have no relief from the heat and the same for the very cold winters I have found paradise when it comes to weather. But then I have kids. Naples is by far the rudist city I have been when it comes to families. The average age here is 61 and very noticable. They seriously hate seeing kids here. The only place we can go is Target. And the very few people here with kids are in hiding and my kids have no one to play with. I make enough money where in Indianapolis I would be doing very well, here I feel like I'm in poverty. The people who make the real estate so high are old people coming down with there life savings, you can't compete. I love the weather, but have to leave this retirement village behind. Good luck with getting decent service, I'm moving to Ft Myers.

Naples, Florida is one of the most beautiful place - 8/19/2006

NAPLES, Florida is one of the most beautiful places in the country. For the period of 1995-2000, Naples led the country with the highest net migration of young, single, college educated residents. The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight says the Naples-Marco Island metro area is No. 1 in the nation for home price appreciation for the second quarter ending June 30, 2005 compared with the same time last year. Single-family homes appreciated 35.6 percent during that time. In May 2005, The Florida Association of Realtors reported that the median sales price for single-family homes in Naples rose 24% during the first quarter of the year to $468,000 compared to the median price of $377,000 from the first quarter of 2004. By the end of June, 2005, the median price had risen to $491,400. The median price of homes in Naples is the highest in the state and the fifth highest in the nation with Palm Beach second at $363,600. Naples, Florida has always been rated highly on the list of Money Magazine's Best Places To Live in the U.S. And that is not by accident. The weather is tropical with temperatures in the winter in the 70's and 80's, yet there is always the influence of subtle Gulf Breezes. Majestic Sunsets are the rule rather than the oddity. The opportunities for recreational activities are endless. With over 90 golf courses, both public and private, there are more holes per capita than any other place in the U.S. Golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools, walking paths and biking lanes abound. Naples is also home to the Franklin Templeton Shootout, The ACE Senior Tour Event and many top tennis events. Golf Magazine's 2005 Dream Home was built in Naples Florida. One is never far from the water in Naples. Directly on the Gulf of Mexico and near the 10,000 islands in the Everglades, Naples affords boaters some of the prettiest waterways and beaches in Florida where dolphins and manatees cavort in the waves and where sport fishermen can experience some of the best fishing in the world. Waterfront homes need not be on the Gulf of Mexico as there are hundreds of lakes that dot golf courses and developments throughout the area. Safe harbors for boaters include the Moorings and Venetian Bays, located between Gulf Shore Boulevard and US 41, Naples Bay, Wiggins Pass, and the many canals and waterways that span the magnificent areas of Port Royal, Aqualane Shores, Windstar, Parkshore, Royal Harbor, Bayshore, Oyster Bay, Seagat
