I LOVE Redding!!! - 4/10/2011

Redding is not only beautiful, full of lakes, rivers, streams and snow capped mountains like Shasta and Lassen. The people are very friendly. I've lived here for 30 years and have traveled quite a bit, and I'm always happy to get back to Redding!

One of the prettiest places for outdoor recreation - 10/24/2010

Redding is one of the prettiest places in California. We are surrounded by mountains and we have miles and miles of hiking, biking and walking trails. We also have lakes and rivers to play on. It's very hot here in the summer and having the mountains and lakes to escape to is a blessing.

STAY AWAY FROM REDDING - 6/29/2010

Ok, orignally moved to Hayward, California from Cincinnati, Ohio...MISTAKE #1. MISTAKE #2 deciding to move out of the city to have an easier life like the one I used to have in Cincinnati. Redding is beautiful but once you get to know it, its a nightmare. Meth heads ARE EVERYWHERE, the cops are lazy and dont want to help you ( i would know because I had the wonderful problem of dealing with a meth head/drunk/insane person threatening my life and constantly trying to fight my boyfriend). I called the police on three different occasions on this druggie and the cops solution? Move. Literally every person I happen to come in contact with was either homeless and on drugs, on welfare and on drugs, or just on drugs. I, personally was accused of being high on meth as well, which is almost comical, but at the same time is not. Because the town is crawling with meth heads everyone assumes you too are on meth. On top of the drug problem, the homeless problem, the crap job market and the rude people who just want to fight, you get the real feeling your in hell when you sit around and sweat in the summers in 115 degree heat. Believe me, its a real treat. I have been here 5 months and guess what Im getting the hell outta dodge....tomorrow as a matter a fact! Do yourself a favor and DO NOT MOVE TO REDDING!! Save yourself and your sanity and do not move to this hell on earth!

Nice place to live and raise a family - 1/15/2010

I lived in Redding for 15 years and raised my children there also. It is a nice community and even though it is growing, it has a small town feel, so be careful who you talk about as most people are related and/or know each other. But all in all it is a great place to live. Sorry I had to leave but it is the only place in California I would return to if I was to move back to the west coast. Lovely people, places, things to do, and even the weather is not bad in the heat of the Summer. Gotta love it!

Economy and Culture - 1/7/2010

If you need employment, there are no actual industries in Redding - mostly small business, retail, 2 hospitals, medical offices and a very small percentage of government employees. Redding is behind the rest of the large cities in California by at least 15 years. Elected officials have not brought in a 4 year college or encouraged industry to stay to provide jobs. It may be a good place to raise kids or retire but a real struggle to make a living here. The population is not diverse culturally and is quite provincial with strong conservative political views and traditional American family values. The summers are incredibly hot - temps often reaching 105+ for most of the summer thus heating and cooling utility bills will run fairly high.

Lakehead California Economic , population statisti - 10/10/2008

Although the city section of this Web Page dosen't have lakehead california on it , Redding California is the closest large city so I put it in order to continue this. I am writing this in regards to LAKEHEAD , CALIFORNIA . Your webpage comes back with a population that is wrong, job rate is wrong, basically other than lakehead is in california everything is incorrect. Lakehead California is in dire straits. Even the childrens school closed last year becasue there are not enough children there to keep it open. Lakehead California is on the Federal Census Bureau watch list because of it's 50% drop in population over the past ten years. There are not 1500 people living there. Almost every buisness on Main Street is in financial trouble and/or up for sale. Nothing in the Lakehead area has improved in the past 40 to 50 years. Everything except Lakehead Lodge (which got painted and semi remodeled by an individual that did the best he could) is run down and very un attractive to the passers by. The level of near by Shasta Lake is 170 feet below normal , which leaves up stream lakehead with a stream of water vs a river. So In short, I would revisit the facts of Lakehead California before publishing things that are totally untrue. With the recent change in economy here in the U.S. Lakehead California may certainly fall lower into the failing town status than ever before.

Living in Redding - 8/16/2008

Well, if you like a growing city then Redding is the place for you. Me personally, I'm not wild about it. Redding has lots of outdoor activities available. Kayaking on our beautiful lakes, skiing/snowboarding on beautiful Mt. Shasta, boating, hiking, horseback riding, etc. And that is what has brought so many people here. As a result of so many people coming here the crime has gone up dramatically (in my opinion), people are not as friendly anymore (city people bringing their attitudes with them), it's crowded everywhere you go, and jobs are hard to come by/keep. It's kind of a country setting, which is nice if you're into that kind of thing (wholesome way of life). This is all just the opinion of someone who has been here their whole life of course. You may love Redding! ...don't underestimate the summers here either.. they are HOT HOT HOT!!! :)

Redding Summers - 8/12/2008

I am not originally from Redding, but have lived here for several years now. I find the heat in the summer here to be swelteringly hot. Think Las Vegas or Phoenix and back it off a little. Combined with the smoke from the fires this summer (08) it has been miserable. I am a returning adult student and wonder if I want to finish school here or head elsewhere. Lived in Portland in the mid 80,s for just shy of two years and loved it. Now Portland is even a better place to live. Bruce

Shasta and Whiskeytown lakes - 6/21/2008

Within 15 minutes from downtown Redding you can be to either the very large (and great for boating, caping, mountain biking, hiking, Fishing, swimmming and more) Shasta lake or the smaller yet beautiful Whiskeytown lake( kayaking, sailboating, hiking, swimming, boating, camping, etc..). Mt. Shasta (great ski and snowboard park available), Mt. Lassen and Castle Crags are all within an hours drive.. Not to mention the local Rivers and creeks that are throughout the area. we also have the gorgeous Sundial Bridge, Turtle bay museum and much more...The weather can be hot in the summer so take advantage of what the area has to offer & cool it down. I love living and enjoying my family of 5 in the Reding Area.

Redding-coming along! - 6/5/2008

Redding, like the rest of the central valley, has hot summers. However, these summers do not have the humidity found in some other areas of the country. Redding has their own power generation company, which allows electricity to be cheaper than some other larger metropolitan areas of California. Let's not forget that Redding is convenient to some pretty spectacular scenery, not to mention not far from Lake Shastina and Lake Shasta and a bunch of other recreational areas. To the person who said they can't wait to get back to the "Bay Area" because Redding is too conservative and not "multicultural" enough for them-open your mind!!!Learn about what goes on inside someone's head rather than what the color of their skin is. You sound very prejudiced. Multicultural doesn't tell you what is inside a person's head nor what kind of person they are. This same person seems to think that Redding is "too conservative" for them, yet they give to evidence of this or any examples. Pretty narrow-minded of them, isn't it. I grew up in "fly over country" where every person is important and everyone's opinions are valued. When I myself lived in the Bay Area, where the so-called "multiculturalism" is supposed to flourish, I was amazed at the narrowmindedness and prejudice they have toward flyover country. Redding is one of those "flyover" places. But Redding has a very good quality of life, and values individuality. The Bay Area deludes itself into thinking it is so "diverse"----well, maybe that is only skin deep, get it? Once you get past the skin color, then what? For anyone with an open mind, try Redding. It is close enough drive to the Sierra mountain range, to many natural rivers, and you could do worse than live in Redding. Redding's winter temperatures rarely drop below 40 degrees, and it doesn't snow. It doesn't have the traffice jams you find in the Bay Area, and the people are friendly, and you can actually have a conversation with them because they have a bit of time for that instead of having to race off down the freeway. There aren't really any slums in Redding and there are several community colleges within range. Oh-and the internet HAS come to Redding---you can get your MBA from Duke online while you live in Redding.

I don't recommend moving to Redding by choice. - 10/18/2007

I visit Redding on a regular basis for business and I'm always relieved to get back to the Bay Area after a trip there. The weather is fairly uninviting year round. It's either too hot, too cold or raining. There is a severe lack of culture and multiculturalism there. The political sway is way too conservative for my taste. There is a fairly big lack of higher education in most of the adults I have met there. The nightlife is nonexistant except for really seedy bars and a casino. Even after traveling up there for 5 years, I have yet to find a upper end restaurant in town. As far as shopping goes, there is the Shasta Mall. It has improved but it's still pretty run of the mill and plain.

making a living - 7/30/2007

Redding is great for young couples or singles. We have Shasta college and Simpson university. However, trying to support a family of 4 in Redding has proven difficult for my family and many others. Jobs here do not pay well. I would suggest finding the job you want BEFORE you move here and be aware that working out of town in a big possibility. I am also not impressed with the public school system here(K-8). On a positive note, there are endless outdoor activities to participate in. I also enjoy the fact that we have a good selection of stores and don't have to fight through traffic to get to them.

River Runs Throught It - 4/5/2007

Redding is a river city. You can't drive any where without seeing the beautiful Sacramento River. We have lots of trees here and although we do get scorching...scorching summers we are green and unlike the desert do cool down in the evenings. You can grow anything here from citrus, peaches, lovely and varied trees; crepe myrtle, magnolia, redwoods, Japanese maple, trident maple, Queen Palms, etc. The flowers range from clematis, roses, bouginvilla (sp) mandevilla (sp) and all in between. We have a nice airport and from here you can travel anywhere. Friendly people (which I've always thought depends on you). Housing is not inexpensive but certainly not San Francisco. We are within a stones throw from Oregon so it's a nice drive to have lunch and come back. My favorite is the winter; not freezing, wonderful rains. It's a good place.

I'm 26 yrs old and love Redding.... - 3/12/2007

.... I've lived here since I was four. Yes I belive most the elementry schools need some improvement, but we do have some good ones, we have two community collages plus Chico State Universty is only an hour away. YES, The summers are HOT , and we rarley ever get snow but I still love it. Just make sure you have CENTRAL heat and Air... also A/C in the car is a must!!! We have beauitful Mount Shasta (an hr north with a ski park) and Mt. Lassen (an hour east) both full of snow in the winter and active volcanos. (We also have made cuting our Christmas trees from both a great family traditions) We have two nice lakes (Shasta & Wiskeytown) to help cool us off in summer. The Pacific coast is about 3-4 hours west (depending on how you drive the windy road). Redding also has Sacramento River the flows through town and offers several walking trails. One hot tourist spot is Turtle Bay Musuem (great for families) and The Sundial Bridge that allows you to walk accross the river. It's pretty cool but I'm still not convinced it was worth the 19 million or whatever to build it. AS far as shopping and resturantss go we have a good selection including all the basics... Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, Petsmart & PetCo, Target, Michaels, CostCo, Pier1, Olive Garden, AppleBees, Chevy's, Red Lobster, Red Robin, just to name a few. Our mall includes a food court, Old Navy, Macy's, JC Penny's, Sears, Wet Seal, Anchor Blue, Buckle, American Eagle, Hott Topic and more. Night life is okay... We have Win River Casino with Elements bar plus the Martini Bar, and a few clubs/bars that are pretty popular...Rumars/Colsium, Bert and Ernies, Monroes, and the Rusty Nail. Real Estate... well it is what it is. Personally I think it's too high, but I love Redding and all that comes with it. In the end it makes it worth it and I plan on buying here!!!
