See the child-molester's statue - 10/8/2020

I've lived in Sheridan for over sixty years. Grow, grow grow with no planning for it. Advertises a "small-town" atmosphere, but that is long gone. Too big now. Too overcrowded. Now they have a statue of a child molester on Grinnell Street, and Main Street s a traffic jam mess with the new "three-lane" configuration. Don't come here. Go to Buffalo instead--still a "small" town.

Love it, but had to leave it - 5/30/2019

Sheridan was a great place to be a kid--outdoor opportunities, very little crime, and a strong sense of community. The art community is everywhere in Sheridan, and events like Third Thursday, the farmer's markets, and rodeo are fun for everyone. Whenever I go back to visit my parents, I wish I could find a job in Sheridan and move back. It is absolutely beautiful there with the Big Horn mountains so close, and rolling hills surrounding the valley. Much of the creek has also been restored to a more natural floodplain instead of the Army Corps of Engineers concrete canals that were fashioned years ago. There are more walking paths, and a distinct desire to improve and diversify to attract young people. New breweries are popping up, and Koltiska Distillery has finally opened a tasting room. Drawbacks: like many rural western towns, there is a lack of diversity. That does NOT mean that everyone here is bigoted or uneducated, like some of the reviews suggest (I also don't think you can know a town just by stopping for fuel on a drive through....). Lack of job opportunities makes it difficult to retain young talent. The state politics cater to wealthier individuals, many of which come to Wyoming to retire, and don't have to experience being working class in Sheridan. Finally, the emphasis on the cowboy identity gets old. Not everyone who grew up there or lives there is a cowboy. Sheridan needs to focus on other appeals if the town wants to change with the times. Otherwise jobs will keep depending on extraction industries, ag, and tourism--none of which are particularly sustainable in the long run.

Intolerant Yuppie Town - 10/18/2018

Rich yuppie town, a tourist trap, intolerant, people, the Police are the worst, as are the Judges. I am an RN taking my husband to the Mayo Clinic for treatment of prostate cancer. We stopped for food and fuel. Intolerant of those with disabilities, could not even find a place to pee without spending money. On a side street people were walking their dogs, and not even picking up the poop. A discusting place off Main Street. Main Street is all gussied up for the wealthy heading to the Rockies. Stay away if you are Black, Elderly, or have any disabilities. Minnesota Nurse Rochester Minnesota

Recent transplant. Good and bad stuff. - 10/31/2017

Hoping that my point of view as a recent transplant to Sheridan, may help others. I came here from big cities having lived in Las Vegas and Orange County. I knew in advance the small size and limited resources of Sheridan, so I was not completely ignorant upon arrival. However there were a few surprises I didn't expect. Good ol' boy network. Not in the traditional sense, but more of a "If you're not wealthy and from here, you won't go far" type of way. There is a serious lack of diversity in just about every way possible. From culturally to commerce the town lacks greatly in it's diversification. In the last 6 months we've lost 5 retailers. KMart, JC Penny's, Boot Barn and a small clothing store, Rue21. There's a Wal-Mart that seemed to have gobbled up numerous other retailers over the years as well. Dining options are somewhat limited and those options by and large have some of the worst customer service you'll ever encounter. The talent pool for employers in town is incredibly shallow, almost a puddle. Housing is cripplingly high for the quality of homes available. So much so that a single income family making under 100k can't begin to afford a decent home unless they are gifted a large inheritance or have deep, deep roots in town. There are numerous parks, greenbelts and nature areas that are gorgeous. Schools are very, very good with some of the highest per student spending in the country. For such a family oriented town, there is surprisingly little to do for children from ages 5-18. One ice rink, one dilapidated roller rink, one movie theatre, a bowling alley and a YMCA. Jobs are quite scarce until the mining/natural gas fields ramp back up. Wages for existing jobs are pretty stale and do not reflect the high cost of living. Shopping is poor to somewhat fair, with decent shopping a minimum of 1.5 hrs away north or south of us. If you're a sportsman this is paradise though. Hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, boating possibilities are endless. Nightlife is non existent unless you want to sit at a tavern until close, which is midnight or earlier in most places. DUI's are almost a badge of honor here which is sad if you are an employer that needs to insure its workers. Winters are long and bitter and you better have indoor projects to do or you'll probably be making babies, which isn't always a bad thing. Clean, quiet, microscopic crime rate, conservative almost to a fault, mired in old days thinking and fearful of change. Great schools, great outdoor lifestyle, beautiful scenery and wildlife galore. Needs more shopping, dining and entertainment options and a considerable shake up at the city official and city council level to embrace change and set Sheridan up for the future. It's on the verge of being really great just needs some progressive thinking to get it there.

Wonderful Place! - 5/21/2016

I have lived in Sheridan several times and I have to say this is one of the best towns in America! First of all, the town is located at the base of the Bighorn Mountains and surrounded by rolling hills, some trees and meadows. The downtown is very clean and well maintained. There are many wonderful parks and trails that accommodate all sorts of recreational activities. There's a Walmart, Kmart, Albertsons, Walgreens, Home Depot and numerous small shops, restaurants and bars. There's a rich and vibrant history in this town and is a sportsman's paradise. A great place to settle down and raise a family, or retire. For singles in their teens and 20's, there's not much of a dating scene but the town still can be quite fun. There's a very nice community college nearby that offers an array of 2 year degrees. Overall Sheridan is a gem!

What is Sheridan like for a new grad? - 1/27/2016

I recently received a job offer in Sheridan in the healthcare field. I am a new grad from college and was wondering if this would be a good place to start off my career and life after college. I have normally lived in bigger cities but a small town does not intimidate me. I would appreciate any thoughts!

surly women, big ole trucks - 11/8/2015

I agree with this. I just moved back. I am a native but don't feel like one. This town has really changed alot. It used to be filled with humble and hardworking people mixed with eclectic people from the coasts. It has turned into suburbia and the super rich have done nothing to add to the ambience or culture of the town. And the town is now filled with macho men in big pickups. I dont know where they came from. Not here. I feel that most of the other women here are surly. They seem to resent me. The customer service is worse than anywhere I have ever been. The chains ate safe and a handful of local establishments. I do avoid most of the local establishments, though. Frackeltons, Las Delicias, Good Health Emporium, and The Golden Rule Grocers are good, but overall, the locals dont seem to take hreat pride in their customer service. People jere standoffish. My friends have all moved to other towns because of the snobbishness. But I ask them what do the women have to be snobbish about? The thought had never occured to me but now I can see that its true. Almost comical. I go to billings to see a doctor or natropath. Theyve almost taken my life here 2 times so far. Natropaths are not allowed in the state of Wyoming, so in that regard, Montana is better. Casper has some nice Thai restaurants, and the people are freindlier. Same with Billings. You have to Really love the mountains alot to live here.

The has been town - 3/17/2015

Do NOT move to Sheridan unless you are filthy rich, period,as the business's cater to the rich, the rents are too high, the real estate is way over priced, there are very few decent paying jobs to keep up with Sheridan's exorbitant cost of living. While many have lived here for years, they seem to be unknowing,or uncaring, about the extreme price hikes in the area. Most people travel to Billings,Montana,Casper,Wyoming or Rapid City,SD to shop,or use the internet as variety is nonexistent here for most goods.Unless you are a heavy drinker that is,or use drugs.Sheridan was once a great town to live in,but has really went to the dogs.

Left Sheridan for Greener Pastures - 11/9/2013

Just wanted to point out that despite some of the reviews here, Sheridan's cost of living is below the national average. Housing is not cheap, but by other posts here, you'd think it was astronomical. I am a real estate agent here, and would contribute the following: It is a small housing market, and by that I mean, it has never been overbuilt like places where housing prices collapse because of the immense oversupply of homes. Even though our market has softened like other parts of the country, we are a little insulated from massive depreciation due to the size of the community and continued demand for housing. Speaking to the issue of race, it is probably 97% Caucasian, so if you are not white, people will notice you, there will be curiosity. Not everyone here is racist though, not even close. I apologize to anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of running into a bigot in our community, but bigots exist everywhere. Bigots are probably less obvious in larger communities too. Having lived in Denver, Colorado myself, I would say it was harder to meet people there than here. I find that if you reach out here, people extend warmth in return. Their is a sense of community and devotion to our children here that is hard to beat. People care here, which is obvious by the out-pouring of support through fundraisers and benefits and programs to help those in need. The crime rate is incredibly low as well. Ultimately, there is a place for everyone, whatever your style. For myself, every other place is a place I can visit, but Sheridan is where I will make my home.

high cost of housing - 8/29/2012

If you planning on moving to Sheridan, may i suggest to all who want to come here to investigate Sheridan's high price of housing. Sheridan is a decent clean town to live. but the cost of housing keeps people that work for a modest income from moving here. Many people who cannot afford to stay leave. Many of the wealthy do reside in the powderhorn residential area where million dollar homes abound. Sheridan is fast becoming the new latest version of a Jackson Hole environment. Montana, Wyoming, Colorado now have the dubious distinction of having the most expensive housing markets in the country.. so happy trails. and remember one thought. you cant live on the scenery. you can starve here in a beautiful mountain setting just like any other place in the country

not a good town for a working class family - 7/14/2012

Sheridan is a nice town. Plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking ,fishing and wild game hunting. But unfortunately, an average working family cannot afford to live here. The wealthy own the banks, the land and the real estate! And the ones who cannot afford to live here either pay high rent or move out of town! And many do leave! If your not part of the club, then your out the door, so If you thinking of moving here, make your decision wisely. Make sure you have a good job with a good income.Home prices in sheridan are nothing short of ridiculous!! It's all about status and money here!!! Sheridan is an attractive town for upper middle class families. Crime is low, which makes the town suitable for young families who want to raise their children in a safe environment!

Not a good place if you are a person of color. - 2/26/2012

I have lived in Sheridan, Wy for 6 years and there is one thing I've learned about this town and that is it's a very racist city. I'm a person of color and since living here I've been called every racist name in the book. Just last Friday a young black man was in a bar called Rails and 3 or more men walked up to him started a fight and then pulled out a noose and told him they would hang his behind. They told him that that was the way it was in Wyoming. If you are white it's ok you don't get hassled but if you are of color you get hassled. I'm leaving here soon because this is not the way I want to live, afraid to go places, for fear some people will jump me, hurt me, or kill me. The police are no better when I first moved to Sheridan, Wyoming the police stopped me for no good reason and when I ask the police why they stopped me his reponse was " I never seen you before ". The politics are as they do want they want to do, if you are of color you catch hell in this city. I find you are traveling through this city going north keep on going til you get to Billings, MT, you'll find the hospitality there to your liking. If you are going south through Sheridan keep on going til you get to Casper, WY, you'll find the hospitality better there also. I'm a person who likes all people who are good but I don't want anybody to experience what I've experineced in Sheridan, Wy. My girlfriend is going though the same thing for going out with me, she is being hassled because she is white and I'm a person of color. This is the year 2012 and this city is stuck in the stone age. Peace and love to all, watch out where you decide to lay your head.

SHERIDAN - 1/21/2012

SHERIDAN LOOKS INVITING BUT LIVING IN THIS TOWN HAS BEEN A TOUGH EXPERIENCE.THE PLUS HERE IS THE BEAUTY OF THE BIG HORN MOUNTAINS WITH ALL OF THE OUTDOOR OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND HERE. THE NEGATIVES: THE HOMES ARE OVERPRICED. SOME OF THE PEOPLE CAN BE FFIENDLY BUT THE LOCALS( NATIVES) WHO RESIDE HERE ARE SOMEWHAT STANDOFFISH, CLICKY AND NO SO FRIENDLY THE WORD OUTSIDERS IS A COMMON PHRASE SPOKEN HERE!!.MANY PEOPLE COME AND WANT TO LIVE IN SHERIDAN FOR A WHILE BUT THEY FIND OUT QUICKLY YOU CAN'T FIND SUITABLE WORK THAT PAYS A DECENT WAGE TO OFFSET THE RIDICULOUS COST OF HOUSING. IF YOUR NOT FROM SHERIDAN, YOU WILL NEVER FEEL LIKE THIS IS HOME IN MY OPINION. THE CULTURE FAVORS THE TOURISTS. THE SUPERWEALTHY CONTROL EVERY ASPECT OF SHERIDAN.ITS ALL ABOUT CONTROL. THIS IS THE MOST FACIST COMMUNITY I HAVE EVER LIVED AND BY THE WAY. THE TOWN HAS SPENT MONEY INSTALLING CAMERAS EVERYWHERE IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA. YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR BEING WATCHED EVERYWHERE YOU GO!! AFTER SPENDING 9 PLUS YEARS WORKING AT THE VETERANS HOSPITAL, I AM FINALLY RETIRING FROM FEDERAL SERVICE.I AM RELOCATING TO ALPENA, MICHIGAN. EXCEPT FOR A FEW VERY WONDERFUL PEOPLE I HAVE MET HERE I WILL NEVER MISS THIS TOWN.

Little town - 6/11/2010

I have lived in Sheridan my entire life. I love the beauty and the history of this town. However it is an extremely expensive place to live. If you don't have a great paying job then you wont have much. I know people that have to work 2 and sometimes 3 jobs just to make ends meet. I have recently been told that if you aren't originally from here it's hard to make friends and that we are very clicky. It makes me sad to see these things that ruin such a great little town but I'm afraid that it wont change. But if you can get past all that then you may love here :)

About Sheridan - 7/1/2009

You aren't nuts. This is especially the case if you are moving from Surprise. Wy has exceptional funds for education (look at all the brand new schools). Almost no crime (Compared to AZ), a very friendly population and an economy the envy of the nation. We used to live in Jackson, Wy (subsequent to that in AZ )(and then have moved to Sheridan (Jackson has been Californicated-the billionaires are kicking out the millionaires). There is the little matter of the cold climate, but you'll get used to it Best wished in your potential move.

Insane cost of living. - 6/16/2007

I have lived in Sheridan, Wyoming since 2003. It was expensive when we moved here. But it has really gotten bad since. Sheridan is a beautiful place, and if one was a millionaire one could enjoy it. But if you work for a living and your are not at or near the top of the work chain be prepared to be working far to much to enjoy the area. Since I bought my house, its value has gone up 75K. Nice but the taxes have followed almost doubling in the past 2 years. The city has doubled the cost of water/ sewer/ and garbage services. The word is that Sheridan is turning in to another Jackson Hole. If thats the case, like Jackson there will be no one here for the service of the rest. I would not take this with a grain of salt, I am a licensed Architect and make a fair wage, but not enough for this area. Even the fast food places are paying 9 dollars and hour and can not keep employees.

Sheridan, WY - 3/20/2007

I am from AZ (Page, Prescott, Phx.). I have lived here 26 years. For me, I have enjoyed the low crime rate and beauty of the surrounding mountains. I have also enjoyed the small town. I have not enjoyed the long winters, which can be severe (temps way down below zero at times). The sun shines in the winter, but has no warmth. (There are, a lot less sunny days here than AZ as well.) The locals are often natives and it is difficult to make good friends here. Shopping is limited and most people go to Billings, MT (1 hour 40 minutes away) to do major shopping. There is little cultural diversity here. If you love winter sports, hunting, etc., are married and not worried about making friendships for a while...this may be for you.
