Rocky Hill once had real character, a small town nestled on the Connecticut River fifteen minutes from Hartford on old Route 9, which ran all the way down to Saybrook. There were dairy farms up until about 50 years ago, and Higher Pond, the Meadows, and dinosaur tracks yet undiscovered. Ollie's Hardware, The Caruso Brothers, Grasso's, The Little Hut, Mille Mills, Burpees, Franks, The Fountain - maybe the town didn't have a lot of class but it had character. The bright white Congregational Church contrasting with lush green grass, and across the street was a dentist's delight: Vinchetti's candy store. The charming little town really began to grow in the 60's and it hasn't stopped since. Today, with the exception of a few well-preserved old homes, the church, and the oldest continuously operating ferry in the country, very little remains of what it once was: a great place to grow up.[read more...]
