Madison Heights...shop till you drop. - 1/1/2007
I've lived here for 6 years; moved here from Port Huron (a small town in the thumb) after living briefly in Boston.
Upside: Good tax base: lots and lots of retail space here...big boxes, strip malls, a large shopping mall, all fairly new and very close by. Decent selection of ethnic stores, groceries, and restaraunts. Apartment living is affordable and good proximity to two major expressways. I can get to just about anywhere in SE Michigan in an hour or less. Police and Fire Depts. seem to be on the ball.
Downside: Michigan's economy is tanking right now, and taking the housing industry with it. Unemployment is a problem, as is homelessness even out here in the 'burbs. Public tranportation (like most of the Detroit metro area) is minimal. Lots of foreclosures right now...and a lot of bargain basement prices for someone moving to the area. Good luck selling your house or finding a job, you'll need it![read more...] |
