What BestPlaces Users Say about New Bern

New Bern, North Carolina is a small city located on the Neuse River, known for its beautiful historic downtown and waterfront area. It has a population of approximately 30,000 people and offers a variety of cultural and outdoor activities for residents. It is also home to many retired individuals and has a relatively low cost of living compared to other cities in the state.

According to various user reviews on BestPlaces.net, living in New Bern has its pros and cons. Many people praise the city for its charming atmosphere and friendly community. One user, named Mary, says "New Bern is a hidden gem. It has all the amenities you need and is surrounded by beautiful nature." Another resident, John, agrees and adds, "I love the small-town feel and the fact that everyone knows each other. It's a great place to raise a family."

However, some reviewers mention the lack of job opportunities in New Bern. One user, Sarah, states "There are limited job options here, especially for young professionals. Many people end up commuting to nearby cities for work." Another resident, Mark, shares his experience saying, "I've had a hard time finding a job in my field, which has been frustrating. The job market here is definitely competitive."

In terms of the cost of living, opinions are mixed. Some users find it affordable, with Christine saying "The cost of living is reasonable, especially compared to other cities in North Carolina. It's a great place for retirees on a fixed income." However, other residents mention the rising housing prices as a concern. Robert mentions, "Housing prices have been increasing rapidly in recent years, making it harder for newcomers to afford a home here."

In summary, New Bern, North Carolina offers a charming small-town atmosphere, friendly community, and affordable cost of living. However, the limited job opportunities and rising housing prices are some factors to consider for those looking to move to this city. Overall, it seems to be a beloved place to live for many, especially for those looking for a slower pace of life and a close-knit community.

Downtown in need of revitalization - 7/10/2009
I have traveled to New Bern a few times for business. I enjoy walking along the Neuse River where there is sidewalk that starts at Union Point Park near the convention center and feeds into many directions of sidewalks that wind through downtown. The colonial homes in one neighborhood near the river are lovely, though many are in need of extensive work. It is a shame to see that many of these historic homes have been divided into apartments, which ruins their allure for prospective buyers that wanted to enjoy the whole home and would have to tear walls down and reconstruct the interiors to restore the former beauty of the homes. The roads in this neighborhood are narrow and in desperate need of repaving. But the homes are convenient to downtown and the well-sidewalked areas, which will be nice if this city sees true revitalization in the future.

The small historic downtown district is an enjoyable walk as well. Many of the streets are undergoing repaving, and there are Read More
