First Time Home Owners watching a city grow - 11/16/2007
My husband and I relocated from Chicago to Phoenix back in 2004 because of the home market. It seems as if the minute we stepped off the plane, the prices of new homes just hit the roof. With our salaries combined (husband: sheriff's department/me: medical field) and a new addition to our family we knew that we could not afford a home in Phoenix. As the population grew before our eyes, we realized that Phoenix was NOT a place we wanted to raise our children.
We started looking at the Austin area and I especially did my research on the city of Hutto. My husband landed a job at the sheriff's department and we decided to pick up and move. We flew to Austin on January 4; moved into our apartment on January 7; my husband started working on January 8; we were able to sign a contract for a new home on January 30.
We wanted the opportunity to build, but we purchased a brand new spec home. We have a two story home that's approx 2150 sq ft. The new home came with $13k in upgrades and was listed for $167k. Prior to signing our contract new homes were reduced in our subdivision and we the base price of $149.
When we arrived there was nothing much out here. There's a Home Depot less than a mile from where we are along with other small businesses. Lowe's just had their grand opening about a month ago. It's located across the street from Home Depot so prices will always be competitive. The city has signed numerous of contracts to extend their highways and make way for additional new homes to be built. A new elementary school opened it's doors this school year and right now are not accepting new students because of the growth that this city is experiencing. A new middle school is in the works to be completed by next school year.
Right now the only disadvantage of such a growing city is the fact that we must be patient and wait on other businesses such as grocery stores to be built. Currently, we drive approximately 8 miles one way to the local store. It doesn't seem far, but it can be when you only need to go for "one more thing". The city will be breaking ground soon for a new hotel and also a mall/condo development.

I could go on and on about this growing city, but I will give you the opportunity to research the area for yourself.[read more...] |
