The pros: if you want your kids to grow up in an ethnically diverse community in which education is highly valued, Sugar Land is tops. The schools are among the best in Texas. Ethnic groups seem to congregate in their own subdivisions, so the mix isn't always easy to tell just walking around the block. People aren't the typical "Texas friendly." I am reminded very much of New England as far as the people being welcoming to newcomers. You have to "prove" yourself in order to be accepted.

As a bedroom community to Houston, it has much better air and water than the big city. Traffic is a problem and getting worse. No way to compare it to the big cities back east..., the Houston area just has a lot of traffic but it isn't really bad.

There is a lot of economic "segregation." The very rich stick to themselves and do not mix with the (shrinking) middle class. The financially challenged of the economic spectrum are not welcomed in most circles.

crime in sugarland - 8/10/2007
we lived in Sugar Land for two years. At first it was great, after a while we realized it just was not that safe. Several as in over 7 home invasion robberies in our subdivision. We had been told that crime stats are not being documented to the FBI. to appear that Sugar Land was safer than it actually is. Just a heads up. If you move to a new community you might want to talk to as many neighbors as you can., not just the police or Read More

Hot, Buggy and Ugly - 10/25/2006
The title pretty much sums it up. I moved here 3 years ago from a city of equal size in GA and this place is unbelievably hot and humid (even compared to GA). The mosquitos, which are out almost year round, are the biggest I've ever seen. They could easily cover a person's fingernail in width. Sugar Land, and most of the area is flat with no tall trees except what may have been planted by landscape designers. I have heard that Sugar Land has more master planned communities than any other city, which is okay as long as you don't mind cheap, unimaginative and repetitive achitecture, small yards and 6 ft wooden fences delineating each persons property. Oh, don't tread foot on that property or you might get shot. I'm not saying that everyone in TX is gun happy but I have met more than my fair share of them and I live in a neighborhood of nice, brick, 3000 sq ft houses. Now, I like to hunt on occasion but I'm talking assault rifles and people having to "clear" (like a SWAT Team) Read More

Info on Sugar Land - 9/20/2006
I live in Sugar Land, Technically born and raised. I never lived in Houston for a minute but that effect me everyday. I am 21 years old and am ready to leave. Granted people are friendly here and many are open minded, and it looks like a really nice place to live. It is beautiful, spacious and all they talk about. But personally being literally borderline Houston is horrible. I would not recommend sugar land to anyone unless you plan to live deep in the heart of sugar land, and if your work is in the neighborhood, and there is a school down the street, and if you can get all your shopping done in that same street (not likely). The traffic here is crazy and hectic. Unless I leave early in the morning for school (downtown) at 6:15 in the morning, I will not make it until close to 7:15. The average time it takes me to get anywhere even in sugar land to sugar land is about 30- 45 minutes without traffic. The freeway is shared by all, so casually everyone is on it, and there is so much Read More

About the City - 9/4/2006
Having lived in Sugar Land for about 5 years, I would have to say that yes, it is a good place to live in general. However, one thing that I did not like about it was the fact that it was growing like mad. Fort Bend County is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation (or at least it was, last time I looked). Lots of new housing areas are going up and many people moving in. The School district is good, but they are having a hard time keeping up with all the growth. I would say to the person before who was looking for info that it would be pretty likely to find a job with the district. Proximity to Houston is a good thing, however, most if not all things you could need are there in town. In my time there, I didn't see much crime, though I imagine with the closeness to town, it is there. As most of the town is within 2-5 miles of a major river (the Brazos), there are times when it does flood (mostly when a tropical storm or hurricane comes near, but it doesn't happen that Read More

hope this helps - 9/4/2006
I haven't lived in Sugar Land, but I used to know some people who lived there. It is VERY nice and VERY expensive. You may want to look into Stafford, TX or Katy, TX. They are a little more affordable. Also the Cypress area at the NW of Houston is pretty good. Another website you may want to check out is www.city-data.com. It has a lot of information like population breakdown (race, gender, age, income, etc.) and crime Read More

Would like information - 7/24/2006
I have read so much about Sugar Land my curiousty is getting the best of me. Money magazine, internet articles, best places for families book....and everything makes this place sound unreal. Would anyone recommend Sugar Land to a single mother? What about to an African-American female? Are people friendly to all? I know it is highly conservative, but that doesn't bother me. I am a hard-working teacher who wants to be able to buy a nice home, in a quiet community with nice parks to take my son to play. Any info, please let me know. I hear a lot of bad about Houston, how does the crime in Houston affect Sugar Land? Does Sugar Land have Houston's flooding problems? Are there quality, fairly inexpensive day care facilities? How difficult or easy is it to get a teaching position in Fort Bend County? Is Sugar Land a good place to start a business (day care)? Are there lots of friendly churches (multi-cultural)? I know I am asking a lot, but I want to get all the information I Read More

Ft. Bend Co. Tx. - 5/21/2006
Ft Bend Co is one of the best places live outside of Houston Texas
Some of the reasons:
1. Very strict H.O.A. policy
2. Moderate to High Income Home owners
3. Sugar Land has very strong politcal relationship in Washington D.C.
4. Family orientated shopping, eating out, and many other family activities
5. Crime has increased since 1994
6. At this time do not have to worry about a lot of taxi cabs and public transportation in the Read More
