I live in colorado springs. I am married with an autistic child. I am a black female disabled veteran ( I was in the Air Force) my husband is in the Army. We have lived here for 3 years And I love the scenery but it is hard to find jobs and the rental and housing is sky high. I am an army bratt! I started school in Germany and graduated high school in Hawaii I know expensive and this is it. When our son was in kindergarten I picked him up from school instead of my husband and the next day the kids Jumped him.they said he was not yellow white he is yellow black and used the N-word. I was shocked my husband looks mixed or latino and my son looks just like him. I sometimes get those attitudes when my husband and me go out to eat at some places such as Briargate area, Woodland Park, Littleton, etc. I am surprised I only lived here previously when my dad was stationed here when I was 9 I am now in my early 30's. I like to find a place that is cultural, family friendly, We like to eat out sometimes as family and others as mommy and daddy time, education is a must with and autistic 7 year old, and jobs. we are looking for a good place to raise a family. I would consider other cities in colorado or any state for that matter any suggestions?

You might consider Indianapolis. It is very diverse here, which we love. We have many bi racial couples/friends. It is relatively conservative - good for families - with still plenty to do. Arts, restaurants, parks, etc. The job rate here is better than most cities. The only pitfall to living here is the weather. Summer is nice, but winter is long and overcast most of the time. We don't get dumped on with snow. It just gets below freezing several days in winter. If you can live with that, you'll find better housing costs and friendly, open minded people around the city. (Out in country there are more red neck attitudes, but mostly still friendly people.) Look for better schools in out lying suburbs - Brownsburg, Avon, Carmel. Carmel is pricey, but nearby areas affordable. Lots of square footage for the money here.

Hi christine, I am sorry to hear about your experience. I just ran acroass your message and wondered if you still live in CO. I moved here from silver spring, Md. A very diverse place with great schools and plenty of jobs especially for folks in or coming from the military. It is expensive and can be stressful. Not as family friendly as CO. I would be happy to talk to you more about dc/md/va proper as I think it may be a great place for your family. The resources for disabled children are probably much better there than they are here. I am hispanic/black. Both of my parents are from dominican republic. i was born in dc. my husband is biracial black and white. My son looks biracial. We are struggling with all the silly myths that the students are making at his school which is very white, conservative and christian. I am very disappointed in the school. We still have a house in md which has not sold because of the housing issues, so we are thinking about moving back if we decide not to rent. The best to you.

Christine - I don't usually reply to messages on this board, but I was touched by yours. I was looking at the bestplaces descriptions on Denver because I REALLY REALLY wanted to move there for a couple years, but it never worked out for our family - and I think the Lord has really blessed us in that. After my husband's retirement from the Navy we ended up temporarily in Stafford, VA - and we have been there for 11 years now. It is fairly flat and unremarkable looking (nothing like the Front Range :( ), and the traffic is pretty bad, but people here are generally friendly (except on the highways), it is very heavily populated by military and retired military, there are lots of jobs in DC (forty miles away but there are various commuting options) AND the school system is quite good. Our 13 y/o autistic son started in pre-school here and is now totally mainstreamed - largely due to his excellent teachers. Just as importantly, he has never been bullied or mistreated by classmates. We also know several inter-racial families in our area, and as far as I know they have never experienced overt discrimination or bigotry here. If you are in a position to move, you might consider Stafford, VA... Martha
