Cinci : observations of an outsider
Star Rating - 11/8/2013
Came to Cinci 15 yrs ago. Came from a large European city. I'll try to be objective so here you go...

Negatives:
- conservative, resistant to change, non-progressive city(have been arguing about whether to introduce street-car to the city. This has been going on for years! )
- Most of the locals (especially the ones who grew up here) are closed-minded, sort of 'hillbilly' types. TIRED of them asking me 'where are you from". Go to Chicago, NY or LA... cannot imagine being asked this question there. ( I speak with little accent)
- therefore- this city is not for educated, open minded, cosmopolitan-metropolitan people (or foreigners). I Have B.S. and M.S. degrees + experience =impossible to find job. During rare interviews I was asked discriminatory questions. Fifth Third Bank is especially outstanding in this matter. I was laid off twice in 3 yr period. There is no diversity here, and if you speak with accent- PLEASE RELOCATE. Otherwise they will always be looking at you like you are an alien from another galaxy.
- it is true, the city has a large amount of rednecks. I don't mind rednecks, I like and respect all people. Rudeness is a major turn off.
-not for singles. I read that many singles leave the city. According to census, population of this city has been shrinking.
- a decent amount of big corporations to work for but not sure how to get a job there. None of those companies ever called me. I suppose if you do not know 'right' people doors will always be closed.
- and now I'm going to say something that will always stay in my memory: I'm a refined, classy woman from Europe and I honestly experienced major chock of my life when I saw people frying hot dogs on a Fountain Square. there were other ridiculous games going on ... Omg. So unclassy, unsophisticated, so 'country', so low class... Yes, this is Cincinnati

Positives:
- great place to rise a family. Plenty of suburbs with affordable housing. One only wonders why it is so affordable ... (is it because no one wants it ?)
-very nice Zoo, Theater, Aquarium and plenty of other family-oriented attractions. They could be costly but attending them here and there should be ok.
- nice topography, hills, OH river, spectacular views.
- I heard that cost of living is cheaper in Cinci.
- universities, colleges, sport teams, airport (too expensive though.. people have to drive to Dayton or Indianapolis to fly)
- overall livable city, ok to live.
- good neighborhoods with good schools

To sum it up: I do get if some people like the Cinci. you have to have a certain mind to feel comfortable here. Yes I get it and it is ok. Nevertheless, if you are a 'big' city person, cosmopolitan-metropolitan, progressive out of box thinker -this city is not for you. You will experience cultural shock and you will feel stifled and boxed in.

p.s. I'm in a process of relocation. I had enough.

Thank you Leslie. Relocating from a a big city to here, has been a trial. It is beautiful, but preferably for a weekend trip. Very closed minded, it is a "North City", but the South still prevails here...there is only a few 1000ft bridges here to separate from Southern Culture... The relationships I have encountered here between men and women- has threw me back about 60 years... submissive, quiet women while men attempt to keep their stance as leader/ head of house/ group...Pretty sure women are considered 2nd class citizens here and are an accessory. That is why there are no singles, everyone is married at 23. I was pretty shocked to see this mentality still alive and strong here.

Wow. How rude! Conservative natices are close minded hillbillies? You sure will be asked that in Chicago, because Chi-towners are very proud of their city and take great honor in being "natives." You probably would not be asked that in NYC because people are too busy to care. It's called being neighborly and polite when someone asks you where you are from. That is called taking an interest in someone. Low classed??? So should I call you Euro-trash? I'm Irish, Italian, English, German and Cherokee Indian. I grew up in NY my entire 35 years. How dare you come from another country and insult the US? Just because someone isn't thinking like you doesn't make them resistant to change or close minded. Maybe you're the one who needs to think differently? I'm moving to Cincy in a few months and will be glad to NOT have a person like you there to taint the pleasant beauty that is Ohio. I think Europe is a great place for you. Best of luck.

As a native and a homer, I could write a long list of Cincinnati's imperfections, but as I read Leslie's rant, I can only surmise that she was one of them. How can someone so "classy and refined" be so rude, insulting and close-minded? I moved away two years ago - up the road to Dayton - and I dearly miss Cincinnati. I moved because the 60 mile commute - and my next door neighbor was burglarized - so off I went. My partner and I lived in liberal Northside. Crime was a problem, but I loved the neighborhood. It was diverse, close to everything, cost efficient, and the architecture of the old homes just wonderful. It was 10 minutes away from the university and the multitude of cultural and athletic offerings. 10 minutes away from a number of hospitals and top-level health care. 10 minutes from downtown, and all the restaurants and cultural offerings. Is Cincinnati exciting? No. But I never lacked things to do. I never lacked meeting people. It's a place where people get comfortable, and while that is a positive thing, it has its negative side effects. So if you come with a chip on your shoulder - which many people from more sophisticated places often do, you'll be treated like someone with a chip on their shoulder.

Clearly a person that could not compete. Cincinnati has many opportunities but generally, it is not a town of slackers. Hard work and education will be rewarded in this town of Fortune 500 companies. This is clearly a person on their way out. Cincinnati is a very friendly town and, this person was clearly an angry person that was not capable of making friends. I feel sad for this person.

You are correct in most of your assumptions. Cincinnati politically is conservative (Republican 1st District), but the socialists are beginning to take over. A progressive environment is a BAD thing as it destroys the fundamental values that made the USA a once great country. You are right about diversity. It is almost all black. White flight happened a decade or so ago. Cincinnati is not a great place to raise a family. Housing is by far NOT affordable. $750/month for a 2 bedroom apartment is 2-3 times what it should be, and that does NOT include utilities. Neighborhoods and schools - where did you say you came from??? Both are INFESTED with welfare ans section 8 derelicts. Criminals drive from Cincinnati proper to the burbs to buy their drugs then go back and sell them in the metro area. Criminals watch to see when you leave so they can come steal your central A/C, water pipes, etc.
