I think this comment is very telling. Yes, if you want to live in the "Western Suburbs" and not be part of the city, life in Richmond is tolerable, but not very interesting. Wealthy, white, snobbish, competitive. If that is your cup of tea, then it works. It is interesting that this commenter listed lots of things to do OUTSIDE of Richmond, which is an indication that the city itself is AWFUL. In the city crime is high, parks are shabby, schools are terrible and most people living in the suburbs have no sense of really being part of this city. If you like living in a place where you largely have no interest in going downtown because the city is horribly run and not very well kept up, then it's an ok place to live. But I am sad to live here. MOved here from a city where even the surburbs were "part of" the metropolitan area, where the city council was respected, where the parks were pristine, where everyone wanted to go downtown all the time. If that is what you want, stay away from Richmond. I've been here 12 years now. It's a very sad, sad place.
