Fast-fading haven—- - 8/31/2021
I bought a home and moved here 9 years ago. I knew absolutely nothing about the culture, community or neighborhood. I knew no one. However, I had passed through on vacation and knew the history of the area and especially liked the geography! Coming from a long life in the Deep South, I’d always dreamed of living in or near the mountains. I also needed to escape the southern climate!
Taos is everything and MORE that I could hope for. However, things are changing very fast! Rich outsiders have always been here, both as full-time residents or second (and third) homeowners. Because of Covid, a sudden influx of VERY rich has driven up housing prices over 200% in less than a year. There’s always been a dire shortage of affordable housing here, and now NO rental exists for working families. Property taxes are becoming prohibitive.
