Michigan: trash tier state Ready to throw in the towel with this state. I would recommend looking elsewhere to move, if that’s what brings you to this forum. Frankly that’s what I am in the process of doing. I’ve spent my whole life here—if life in Michigan is as good as it gets, then God must be playing a rude joke on us. To start off, as recent graduate, I had to hustle pretty hard to get a job paying a living wage. How hard does it have to be? As far as economic opportunity, this state is the pits. If you find a job paying enough to cover your rent, its because you’re probably working for someone evil. My father spent his whole life jumping from job to job because of layoffs. I never felt secure and our family internalized that sense of economic instability. Housing is not California expensive, but it is NOT affordable. We have miles and miles of boring suburbs, devastated inner cities, boojy McMansion towns, and rural no mans lands. Our so called affordable housing is uninhabitable. Look into what it’s like living in Flint or Detroit. Our state has failed them badly. We have a tremendous amount of segregation in Wayne County alone. To be frank, it is a region with f*cked energy. Moreover, I have to disagree with the pablum about our four lovely seasons. There are 2-3 seasons and winter is about 5 months long. Fall can be nice. However, it is normal for humidity to be in the 50s-90s year round. Whenever I leave the state, I feel less sweaty and don’t have daily sinus headaches. Be prepared to feel suffocated if you want to live here. Detroit is cool—if you’re into music it’s the place to be. Great venues and it’s a city with a real vibe. However it is also the place where business and govt fails it’s residents with inhumanity and impunity. Maybe you heard about our state government diverting funding to Detroit public schools, in order to subsidize the billionaire Illich family’s business ventures. Don’t fall for the comeback stuff too much either, the residents of Detroit have been struggling and stressed by exploitation for decades. Nothing ever got better out here, and it probably never will. We have lots of coastline, and a gorgeous natural setting in our UP, but for many people never enough money to get there and enjoy it. Frankly, if you’re okay with having no economic opportunity your whole life, you might as well do it somewhere where the weather is more comfortable, like Texas or California .
