This area had been formed out of Bertie and Chowan Counties back in 1760 when local citizens petitioned for new administrative boundaries - posthumously named after British Army Colonel Francis Seymour Conway 1st Marquess Of Hertford whose successful career within government continued mid 18th century onwards.
