Southern California - 12/10/2007

The number one reason I will regret leaving Southern California, if I do, is the climate. I hate really hot weather, but that typically doesn't occur here for too many days in a row, and usually is not accompanied by the high humidity that affects many other states. However, I may very well be driven out of this area due to the high cost of living (it isn't just housing) and the ever-increasing traffic. Of course, I originally came here from another state and therefore added my own contribution to the crowding, so I haven't a right to complain about that!

I grew up here but it's hard to find a home you can afford. The crime is horrible and more people always seem to find there way here.

ADIOS BERKELEY AMIGOS - 10/10/2007

Berkeley, CA is crowded. It's Rt. 80 Freeway, 4 lanes on average, is stop and go in the morning and evening. A 1,000 Sq. Ft. house costs around $500,000.oo. Summer temperatures are mid 70's, winter low 50's. Very nice weather - no rain from May to September. Winter rainfall is around 20". Summary: too expensive, too crowded.

Housing - 8/14/2007

I have lived in Southern California for 25 years and did not like it from day one. People were not friendly and then and still not friendly. The cost of housing is out of control. I live in a 4 bedroom ,2 bath house that does for 450,000. It is not worth it at all. We would not be able to afford it if we had not purchased it 10 years ago. Good jobs are not easy to get and traffic is horrible. I commute to work 30 miles. It takes me 1 hour with no traffic and 2 hours with traffic. If it is raining, forget it, you might as well get a hotel room. The air quality is terrible and it is the worst state to live in.

Bay Area Weather - 7/15/2007

The weather in the Bay Area is one of it's top attractions. Warm days, cool evenings. It normally does not rain from April to November. This makes planning for social events very easy. We do get rain and cooler temperatures during the other months but normally no snow and only rarely do we have freezing temperatures at night.

Its not right for someone to comment negatively on california, especially when comparing it to a place like alaska, which is not a place to consider in relation to a normal state.

3rd World Country - 6/16/2007

My opinions about California can mostly be applied to all of southern California. I moved here to San Bernardino in 1980 after 20 years of living in Buffalo, New York & Alaska. At that time I had thought California was my paradise and this is where I wanted to spend the rest of my life. I took full advantage of the opportunities available including the beaches, mountains, hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling, dry & warm weather, sunshine, cuisine, college, employment, Spanish history & culture, architecture, botanical gardens, etc... The list has no end. However, this was also the beginning of the illegal immigrant mass migration era into southern California which continues to this day. The strains placed against our hospitals, schools, employment (repressed wages) police, fire, social services, housing, etc... from 12 million illegal immigrants who have no desire to be American citizens and claim 10dependants so that they pay no taxes has had the effect of turning southern California from a wonderful place to live into a third world country with extensive suburban slums and at least 30% of businesses that cater specifically to immigrants. Instead of doing what is economically best for our communities, politicians are more concerned about not making anybody feel bad that they are a leech upon society. Over 50% of San Bernardino residents are on some type of public assistance, which those of us with a job are forced to pay for. Just take a drive through any residential community in southern California during the day and take notice at the large amounts of adults who have nothing better to do than hang out in their dirt & weed infested front yards consuming alcoholic beverages. Education levels in our school districts are absolutely embarrasing for a state that was once the premier educational hub of the US. My wife & I are very patiently waiting for the day to come when we are eligible to use our retirement so that we can get away from North Tijuana AKA southern California.

Davis California has the best non-car transportation anywhere. Bike lanes abound, and a University, student-run bus system carries the rest. Low carbon footprint from residents in this burg.

San Francisco, City of extemes - 5/10/2007

Very beautiful, entertaining city by the bay. Extemely tolerant and extremely intolerant. Gays and dogs are coddled and encouraged. Kids, family and the military are 2nd class citizens being phased out as city politics becomes more progressive. Local politicians alarmingly distant, arrogant and socialist. Fabulous food, spectacular setting peppered with prostitutes and homeless. Neighborhoods such as Chinatown, Italian north beach and the financial district transport you into another dimension. Steep, undulating and colorful Russian and Telegraph hill are impossibly charming. The tenderloin is drugs, crime and homeless headquarters. Real estate continues to soar towards 1K a square foot as the rest of the country tanks. Wonderfully mild but dramatic weather. Surrounded by ocean and bay with constant marine activity. Exciting and engaging, the city needs more moderation to thrive and survive.

Southern California Dreaming - 5/7/2007

My husband and I have been living in California for the last 3 years. We are relocating for a number of reasons, but the main reason is the cost of living here. There are many things that have a negative affect on living in this state; the immigration problem, housing costs, gasoline prices, inability to live where you work, no transportation alternatives, to name a few. We've found we don't have many possibilities here, either for a family, or to get ahead financially. There is little to no focus on culture and the arts in many cities and neighborhoods, many people find it more important to worry about their car or their favorite reality show rather than other pursuits.

I like everything about California except the high cost of living. I'd like to find a community that is more affordable than San Diego. And I'm willing to buy land and build. I also want a place waith water--no desert communities. I'd like to be within half an hour to a city with some culture. Anyone know of such a place?
