| Beautiful city - 5/7/2007
I lived in Charleston most of my life and raised two children in private schools in the old historic district. I believe Charleston has more to offer than just about any mid-sized city in America. It offers so much history and culture as well as beautiful beaches and fabulous dining.
The only draw back is the prices of homes downtown now and taxes. If you can afford it, don't live anywhere but downtown.

| Charleston, SC - 5/6/2007
Charleston, South Carolina, is arguably America's most beautiful city. The downtown historic district features some of the most gorgeous 19th Century architecture in the United States. It's a very friendly place, and a very walkable city. Charleston has many outstanding restaurants, and a few other interesting tourist attractions. Other than hot humid summers and periodic hurricane risks in the last summer/fall, its climate is anywhere from perfect to reasonably good. A really bad day in the winter is a cold (mid 40's) rainy day, and they are few and far between.
Visting Charleston, and living in Charleston, however, are two very different things. The education in this area is mediocre at best. Most public schools are struggling. The private schools, while less expensive than those in the northeast, are generally very traditional and not particularly geared for today's forward-looking students. With the exception of the Spoleto Festival in late May/early June, there is no arts to speak of here. And "single A" describes the area's sports teams in many senses of the phrase.

| Can someone tell me...? - 4/3/2007
What is life like in Charleston for a single gay man (not into bar scene at all, but freindly social life suitable for meeting people)? I have lived around the world and am considering Charleston as a place to settle. However, I am also a Northerner? How much of an issue would that be?

| Humidity - 3/21/2007
I am not originally from here but can tell you that the humidity makes the summers awful! Winter is the best time of year to be down here and humidity is not a factor during that season.

| Lowcountry weather - A nice blend of the 4 seasons - 3/18/2007
Charleston weather is a nice blend of the four seasons, leaning a little heavy on summer. If you like a mild winter and an extended summmer season, Charleston may be the right place for you. Winter usually brings daytime temps into the 50's/low 60's with a few days of 30's mixed in just enough to wear some traditional winter clothes. Spring and Fall are really mild and can warm up quickly during the day and then cool off comfortably at night. Summer temp's can range from the high 80's to upper 90's during the day. The temperatures are really ok....it's our humidity in late July and August that can make it a little tough. You get used to it, make jokes about it, and then really appreciate it when the warm summer temp's transition back into a mild fall in late October/November/early December.

| I agree with "shop girl's" posting - 1/3/2007
I couldn't have said it better myself! Loved visiting Charleston and Isle of Palms but didn't know what this area was really like until moving here, WITHOUT doing my homework. Plan to move away in 2008 since we have to be in our house for two years or pay capital gains tax! SC itself isn't that great.

| Too hot and humid - 1/3/2007
My husband and I "retired" from Virginia to greater Chareleston area in 2005 impulsively and without doing our research. The climate here is oppresively hot and humid. We aren't staying!!

Great city to visit, ok to live in. Has a high crime rate, what the average tourist sees is not what the majority of the city is like.

| A question about the attitudes of the people. - 7/12/2006
I have a question for people who live in the Charleston but moved there from other places, about the attitudes of the people of the area. Please forgive my ignorance but we are considering a move to the area and I am interested in finding out how welcoming the residents are towards New Yorkers... er Yankees (and Catholics). I don't know if a vacation would give us a true feeling for the people because, everyone is nice when you're spending money but when you settle down next to them they may not be so welcoming. It is also important because we have a 4 year old daughter and would not want her to have a difficult transition into a move like that. Thanks.
P.S. I won't mention that 2 of my relatives fought for the Union.

| Anyone moved to Charleston from San Diego, CA? - 5/9/2006
My husband and I live in San Diego, CA and are looking for a place to move that is cultural, educated, full of the arts, has great people and very friendly. We have lived in San Antonio, TX, Pensacola, FL and Seattle, WA so we are used to adjusting to fast and slow paced areas. Anyone move from CA to SC and have comments on the experience? Or does anyone want to share their feelings about SC? We would love your input.
Also, we are a mixed couple. Will that be a problem in SC?
Thank you for your thoughts!
Heather

| Info About Charleston - 3/26/2006
Charleston is a quaint historic town on the Wando River. Home to individually owned boutiques and the crabshack. Good place for a week vacation, otherwise, no point in coming. It floods two feet in downtown every time it rains, good place for umbrella lovers. Be prepared to flip your calendars back 200 years. Unless your great great grandfather was a confederate soldier you will not fit in. Good O'l boys political system and general way of thinking. Terrible schools. Mold, dust, bugs, etc. I moved here without allergies and after 2 months had to go on steroids so I could breathe. Hypocrytical church nuts. No night life. Everything closes at 5 pm and is usually closed on Sundays. Home to lawyers, teachers, banks, realtors, and doctors. All of which who pretend to be wealthy when they are far from it. Most of the neighborhoods and houses are "dumps in the ruff". Think again if you are pondering moving here. If you are interested in vacationing. Stay at the Charleston Place hotel, shop downtown on King Street, go to the aquarium, and go to the market, take a carriage tour of the hisoric part of the city, you will enjoy it. I hope this information is helpful to prospective inhabitants of Charleston. :)

| Charleston, SC - 10/5/2005
LIVING IN CHARLESTON, SC
I would just like to tell everyone about my experience living here. Hopefully this will let you know if you wish to live here or not. Charleston, SC, like all places, has it's positives and negatives. I was originally born in another country, but I spent twenty years of my life here, so I know the place pretty well. I've also added bits of humor to hopefully lighten your experience of my accounts. Here it goes-
POSITIVES
Let me start by telling you what I like about about the area- 1. Very historic city- you can especially see this in downtown Charleston. Places to see- the Battery, Charles Towne Landing, Fort Sumter, the downtown flea market, and of course all the clubs & restaurants. 2. The beaches- One of the features about living in this small city is being close to the ocean. My favorite beaches are- the Isle of Palms beach and Folly Beach. Apart from the beaches is sailboating which is very popular around the area. The most general spot is around downtown. 3. Hospitality- Generally the people here are friendly and will go out of their way to help you. Like I said before; it's a small population area so most people already know each other and it's easy to make friends as well as finding a spouse and settling down here, just don't get anyone mad at you or they will kill you. No, I'm just kidding, the people here ARE nice. 4. Climate- Winters are short and mild with a trace of snow annually and summers are long and hot. Definitely a place for warm weather people. Rainfall amount is above average here and in the summer 15 inches of rain or more are not uncommon. Definitely a place for umbrella people. 5.Its laid back and life is at a slow pace- which is a good or bad thing depending on who you are and where you came from. 6. Countercultures- You will still see people into these movements here, especially in downtown- goths, punks, freaks, reggae followers, and a few remaining hippies- though their numbers have been falling into the endangered species category as of 2006.(except for rastafarians) 7. Nickname- Chucktown, cool huh?
NEGATIVES
Now for the downside of living here- 1. This place is too backwards- Set your watch back a hundred
