Relocating from TEXAS - 6/14/2010

I’m looking forward to relocating to Charlotte, NC. How is the job market there? I have over 15 years of administration support and 5 years of childcare (owned my own home daycare). I will not have a job, but I will have some cash saved up, where is a nice place for a low-income family to live with good schools? The area I live in doesn't have public transporation and I have a really old car, does Charlotte have public transporation everywhere are in just select areas?

HIgh Crime in Charlotte - 6/5/2010

I am single but have become frustrated because of the high crime rate in Charlotte. I have two children who live with me part-time but am afraid to move more towards uptown charlotte because of high crime rates. I am forced to live way out in the burbs where there is little action for singles.

Where's My City Charm - 6/3/2010

My city, my city where has it all gone? This city used to be great now it's disappearing into an abyss. Where you ask? Where ever people think is best and the sad thing is that with so many transplants that's not so good (no offense to anyone)the city needs to get back some of it's history. That's the only way it'll regain my respect back.

living in the new south - 4/15/2010

I spent 2009 in Charlotte and was delighted by the climate, geopgraphical setting, friendly people, the beauty of the built environment and particularly, the quality of the medical care, which is first rate. It's a great place to live, raise a family, worship, etc., but it's a bit thin on preserving it's past. Much of the historical downtown has been replaced with modern towers, which are nice, but it lacks the depth that living history can give a city. You can find pockets of interest, but too much has been lost.

Charlotte NC...Bad Risk - 3/16/2010

No matter what anyone tells you about how great this place is..do not, I repeat..do not buy real estate here. If you have come from any kind of urban northern environment..you will be severely disapointed in the backward way of thinking that engulfs Charlotte...and as far as jobs go..there are none, they have been swept away along with the banks. My suggestion to any, who want to get away from overtaxed environments like NY, FLA or others..is..rent first anywhere you go..and give it two years..also consider retiring where there is good culture sporting resources, boating, golf etc. This was the biggest financial, emotional mistake I have ever made. Its up to me to try to warn you.

quality of life - 1/2/2010

Charlotte, North Carolina is the reborn south. Although most of the population has migrated from other cities and appears very diverse it is not ,the mindset and culture is still very south and the underlying issue of racism is very prevalent. Housing is affordable and select neighborhoods provide an environment for you and your children to feel safe but like any other city that has trouble spots. As far as jobs, Charlotte is a huge networking city, so don't expect for Charlotte to be very kind in relation to work because jobs do not exist in Charlotte. Quality of Life on a scale of 1-10...... Ten is the highest. Charlotte ranks a 5,,,maybe a 6.

Looking for a job in Charlotte - 11/11/2009

I moved to Charlotte, NC in June 2008 from Casper, WY. My domestic partner basically brought me down here. For the most part I feel this was a fairly decent move except for one problem--I CANNOT FIND A DECENT FULL TIME JOB HERE!!!! For the time I've been here the only luck I've came to when it comes to employment is a part time job in fast food, which I worked there for 8 months. I've been unemployed since August. I'm looking for work outside cashiering/fast food, and no sales. These jobs just don't last me no matter how hard I've tried. I'm currently attending a university (which I don't know how much longer I'll be attending because I've been having a lot problems), and I have a GED. Most of my experience is customer service/cashiering/fast food, and a little clerical (total of 14 months). I want to look for something else--a full time job that will last me a few years and not a few months. The longest I've ever found a job is 8 months. I also tried sales/marketing jobs, but those don't do me any service, either. How do you find a job outside these industries? Is there any employment for a person like me? Any hope? How do you find a job in Charlotte?!

Charlotte climate - 10/7/2009

Charlotte has a moderate climate - very nice in the fall and spring. Summer can be hot and humid, but you can escape to the mountains with a 2 hour drive, and the seashore with a 4 hour drive. Winter temperatures are tolerable - rarely do we have snow, and when it comes it usually melts quickly. More of a problem are the occasional ice storms in winter that bring down power lines.

Happy Living - 9/15/2009

I have visited Charlotte several times this year, I think it is a beautiful state. I am moving out there in 3 months with my Boy Friend. We r a Interracial (Asian/Hispanic)couple. The majority is of Caucasian race there, all the places we have visited we have been welcomed by them all. I am sure eventually we will run into the Ignorance of people, but realize Charlotte is a religious state. Just pray for those of Ignorance and uneducated people.

Great place to live - 8/17/2009

Charlotte is one of the greatest places in the US to live and I've traveled all over the world and experienced many different cultures so I don't say this lightly. The biggest down side to Charlotte is that there is no water running through the uptown area so you don't have that kind of charm. But we do now have the white water rafting olympic training place so that's cool. But in terms of quality of life, the shopping is fantastic, the arts are wonderful, the sports events are plentiful from NFL to NBA to Nascar, and it's a fantastic place to raise a family. Because Charlotte was undervalued, the property values have not taken the hit that many properties throughout the country have taken. The average cost of a home in Charlotte is only $175,000. You have homes much less and you have million dollar plus mansions to choose from as well. Lake Wylie is 20 minutes south and Lake Norman is 30 minutes north if you like the water. It's 3 hours from the beach and an hour and a half from the mountains. US Airways hub is in Charlotte so it's easy to get in and out of. The traffic like any other big city sucks, and the public school system is not the greatest as we can't seem to get a state government in place that places value on education so our schools are sadly underfunded. Private schools are expensive but provide an excellent education. I lived here as a single person and as a married with kids person, and while it wasn't a great place to be single, I can highly recommend it for families. Taxation in Charlotte is the highest in the state in terms of property taxes at $1.30 per $1000. But it's convenient to live here and there's a lot of southern hospitality here.

unrestricted growth - 7/29/2009

When we initially moved to Charlotte we felt that it was provincial as compared to the Research Triangle part of the state. However,we soon got to appreciate the " big small town feeling" of the city. 10 years later things really changed. Violent crime always significant, increased to the point that Charlotte was considered one of the most dangerous cities. Traffic and pollution grew with the population. The city government was more concerned with population growth than quality of life of its citizens. It is hard for me to understand why people will move to places like Charlotte just because the winters are milder. I would rather shovel some snow than experience oppressive heat and humidity, pollution crime and traffic. In fact I would rather move back to Rochester or Buffalo New York than Charlotte.

Traffic not as bad as you may hear - 7/19/2009

Unless one is commuting to the Lake Norman area from uptown, the commute traffic here is so much less than Atlanta or even Raleigh/ Durham area. A 30 minute significant rush hour is about all we experience, with I-77 being the worst for congestion.
