| Great, but no coastline! - 7/15/2009
I lived in Charlotte for about 5 years. There are upscale "clique" neighborhoods, trendy neighborhoods, and dirt street neighborhoods, as you like. The culture life is positive (rhetoric intentional), except not many college football teams around. Shopping is excellent, churches are excellent (some may be clique-ish), entertainment is excellent. To get to the beach, though, is a major undertaking. There are nearby lakes that take SOME of th burden, but a "day at the beach" is a day driving.
Many and various businesses, small and large. Some big banks, but who cares, the Daltons? Industry and bar-be-cue restaurants abound.
Interesting place, but not much for sailing. I live in Raleigh now, I'd prefer Charlotte.

I’m looking forward to relocating to Charlotte, NC. How is the job market there? I have over 15 years of administration support experience for a top official in local government.

| Finding a good mate do not depend on the city you - 6/15/2009
I read some negative views from singles about Charlotte in this site. Let me tell you something. First, thank God that we have all been created different. Some people like the place they live in while some do not. I do not believe that finding a good mate depends on the city you live in. It is true that big cities like NYC,Chicago,Washington DC, L.A, Miami,Atlanta have pleny of good looking women, places where you can meet them, and exciting nightlife to entertain them. However,an advice I want to give to all single people is that finding the right mate mainly depend on how you treat and love women, how you see yourself, how you see life and poeple around you. A woman that you meet in a big city will not be particularly better than the one you meet in a small southern town like Charlotte. It is what people have in their heart that count the most.
I am from Charlotte, and I have been living in NYC for two years. Based on my own experience, I do not think that NYC is the right place for raising a family if you really need the best for your children. Unless you want to be single and play around for the rest of your life, I believe that we should judge a city by the best thing it can offer for the future. Southern cities such as Charlotte, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas-Forth Worth are not like NYC but they offer a good view of the future because they are economically growing in all fields: Jobs, housing, business opportunities, education, and the best of all is that the cost of living is affordable.
So, again, we are all different.But. if you are planning to move somewhere, make some requirements based on what will benefit you in the future. Do not fool yourself by the system.

It is so hard to find anything here that suits my tastes.
The best thing is the location, in between ocean and beach.

| Charlotte... Southern city without charm or hospi - 4/1/2009
I would like to start of with the positive things about Charlotte. It is an extremely CLEAN city without much urban decay, The city has been vigilant about keeping Charlotte sanitary, and ridding itself of anything unsightly. The job market here is strong, especially the white-collar banking sector. Property is reasonable and tends to appreciate. If you happen to be a race fan, you will meet a lot of other race fans who live here. The Lowe's motor speedway is just 20 miles north, and they are building a NASCAR hall of fame in "Uptown" Charlotte. There are two major league sports teams here, the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Bobcats.
Now to my opinion...
I have lived in Charlotte for 20 years, since our family moved here from new England when I was 17. I was excited about the move at the time, and was eager to enter the community. However, I have found it incredibly difficult to relate to people who live here. In 20 years, I have met and kept just 2 friends.
I am an affable person, and am fairly outgoing. I usually have no trouble at all making friends. In fact, through my business, which allows me to travel, I have met a half dozen or so very close friends from other states and other ares of this state, and visit and stay with them regularly! I simply cannot seem to relate to people in this community.
There is something bizarre about the culture and collective personality of Charlotte. There are plenty of exceptions, but generally, most Charlotteans I have met are unfriendly, standoffish, phony, arrogant, and disingenuous. And they have an uncanny knack of putting their worst foot forward, especially in the blue collar service sector.
There seems to be two basic segments of society in Charlotte. One are the natives of this region who are a little bitter that so many "yankees" have moved here. So many times I have said "hello" to people like this, only to be completely ignored, or shot a dirty look. What's that?!?!?!
Then you have the transplants. Many of these people are here because of job transfers. They mostly come from larger northern cities and hold white collar jobs. Some have been here so long that their children are reaching adulthood. These people tend to be very standoffish, phoney and arrogant. This mix of cultures is not at all a recipe for southern hospitality.
As a city, Charlotte does not seem to have an identity. Charlotte is not really known for anything at all. Living here, a friend and I joke that Charlotte is known for getting rid of it's own history. In it's vigilance to keep everything new and modern, Charlotte has thrown out the baby with the bathwater. There are very few historic buildings or old business sectors. They have banned eclectic business signs, so there are few true landmarks for the average driver to be captured by. There just doesn't seem to be much character to the city. Though it is clean and modern, it is cold and neutral. Not captivating in the least!
Charlotte has not been allowed to evolve naturally into whatever it should be. The city council acts as if it has an inferiority complex. Charlotte is like the poor kid at school who wants so badly to be popular, and will do anything he can to fit in, but is resented and rejected because of it.
You may be wondering why am I still here after 20 years... Well the only reason I have stayed is because my immediate family is here, including a niece and nephew who didn't have a father. Now that they are grown, and my sister has gotten married, I am excited about moving!
I think one major factor in Charlotte's unfriendliness is that people are not necessarily here because they want to be, it's just where they have wound up. That goes for the natives too. Charlotte has wound up being something that they don't relate to or really like, and I don't blame them!

| Best Life I Have Found - 3/5/2009
I don't know why some of these views of Charlotte are do negative. I have lived here for three years and find Charlotte to be one of the best big cities I have ever found. Quality of life, low cost of living, moderate crime rate, moderate traffic, and plenty to do in and around the city.
Charlotte rocks!!

| No jobs here... - 2/25/2009
Bad employer attitudes, bad treatment of people who apply, false job leads, firing at will, discrimination that you could never believe possible in this era (age and sex, not race)..background checks to wash floors, credit checks to waitress, Charlotte has no bank jobs left, no industry, very poor urban planning, small businesses going out left and right due to expensive commercial leases..but the home builders keep building...high ceiling homes where you still need heat in the "winter"..so your heat bills will be as high as living in NY or Chicago...unless your a teacher and want to work in a crummy school district or in the medical field..do yourself a favor, dont move here..I am ready to take burn my house down (kidding)..worst mistake I ever made. Stay up north...where there is more sanity...high taxes yes, but more work and more consumer rights..here, you are nothing!

| Bring Your Hear Home To The Carolinas! - 2/1/2009
Charlotte, NC and the surrounding counties has something for everyone! The Carolina Blue sky and sunshine warms the heart. Here in the Charlotte Metropolitan area, we are luck to have great school systems, two major hospital systems, health care, great universities, national sports teams, NASCAR, and the Arts. Proximity to the beach or mountains is fabulous. It's easy to day trip to Asheville or Charleston. So many wonderful nationalities, cultures are here. With Charlotte's predominate service and financial workforce, it truly is an international city. The city of Charlotte is called "Uptown", not "Downtown." There are two beautiful lakes that frame Charlotte to the North and South, along with the beautiful Catawba River. We have Olympic class sports centers, with the White Water Center being an exciting new addition to our region. Also, with Charlotte boarding South Carolina to the Southwest, we enjoy our SC neighbors and the many amenities that State has to offer. I'm proud of Charlotte, NC!

Great place to live. This city has been growing rapidly and the Cost of Living(specifically taxes) are increasing very quickly although it is still much cheaper to live here than most any northern city.

| Weather in Charlotte - 12/13/2008
Charlotte's weather is basically fine and I have no real gripes. It is often on the humid side, both summer and winter. With all the trees in this city, there always seems to be a high humidity, except during the dry days of colder weather. It generates alot of mold and frankly, encourages several types of allergins.

| A Very Narrow Minded town . Nothing like a City - 10/21/2008
First, they ran the African American county Sheriff out of town. He was elected to fill an open position and the county commissions took the election to court and had it thrown out. Then an African American man was appointed to fill a vacant Democratic city commission seat. The other Republican commissioners refuse to appoint him even though the law requires it. An African American man was hired to be the city police chief. Since he has been here, they (the media) have harrassed him and his family. They have gone back into his past, trying to dig up something silly like he's Britney Spears or something. Nevermind the fact that in the short time he's been here, crime rates have dropped dramatically and he's doing an excellent job. This town needs to wake up and realize what year it is. People of all colors are equal and should be shown the respect they deserve. This is no longer the white country town of 50 years ago. Get over it!
So, if you're an African American good luck finding a job. This is still the good ole boy club town with old money where it's who you know, not what you know.
It's not a good place to raise a family either. The crime rate is as bad as NYC or Chicago and the school system is laughable. The public schools are understaffed (but on a hiring freeze due to budget cuts), unsafe (hundreds of guns are confiscated every year), and low quality (test scores are abysmal). You must be able to afford private school if you have children in Charlotte. And you must also be willing to spend $300K on a house in a decent neighborhood. Anything less and you'll have bullet holes.

| Charlotte is Ok - 10/19/2008
I was transfered to Charlotte almost 10 years ago and find it a good place to live. The problem with Charlotte is that they have a politcal system and elected officials who have no idea how to run a big city and they are the problem. Crime has started to rise as well as unemployment as 1000s of people move to charlotte without jobs hoping to secure employment after they arrive.
Until the officials get voted out we are going to have problems. Charlotte is also a city with rumors and lack of fact news. Recently I read a post on this page that you could not find a quality home less then 250K or you had to move to south charlotte. That is so far from the truth it is not funny there are great places in North Charlotte, Huntersville , and Cornelius where the home prices for starter homes are 175K with good scools and extremely low crime. I think that people need to get good advice about Charlotte and the various neighborhoods and they will find that that is better then most places that they relocate from.
