I have love for Cleveland...sorry if you don't - 6/3/2010

To all who have written horrible reviews calling Cleveland "disgusting" with its inhabitants all "crabby, cranky, and pale", I say that I'm sorry that you feel that way, but if you don't like it you can leave. We don't need any more negativity here. Obviously you have not bothered to explore any of this city other than the local sports bar, where of course you will see people drinking and watching sports (which is all you claim Cleveland has to offer). On Anthony Bourdain's travel show he claims that the episode where he explores Cleveland was his favorite. Why? Because we've got character. Yes the weather is rough in the winter, but we have beautiful fall, spring, and summer seasons as well. If you are not tough enough to brave a little snow, move back south. We could do without driving behind you while you are going 10 miles an hour with an inch of snow on the ground anyways. Downtown has its rough parts but also has very bustling entertainment districts with bars, comedy clubs, theaters, etc. such as E. 4th Street, W. 6th Street, and Playhouse Square. Sure it has its poor surrounding neighborhoods, but also has wonderful up and coming as well as historical neighborhoods such as Ohio City, Tremont, University Circle, Coventry, Little Italy, Asiatown, and the Detroit Shoreway with its growing Gordon Arts district. All these neighborhoods feature wonderful restaurants (4 of the James Beard Award semifinalists are chefs from Cleveland), concert venues, boutiques, art galleries, and more. And I challenge you to name any U.S. city that doesn't have its areas where crime is more prevalent. Cleveland has the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, the Cleveland Playhouse, The Cleveland Symphony, Cleveland Institute of Art, and Museum of Natural History. Throughout the year Cleveland's neighborhoods constantly offer free and family-friendly festivals celebrating art, music, food, and culture. Yes our sports teams, with the exception of the Cavs, can be frustrating. Yet every season we come back and support them in full force with new hope, because Clevelanders have heart. So, I challenge you to put just a little effort in getting to know what this city has to offer before pigeonhole the entire geographic area and all its people. The fact that Cleveland has its problems, yet Clevelanders remain tough as well as hopeful is just why I like it.

Weather - 4/30/2010

The Winters in Cleveland are cold and last from about late November to Early April. Spring & Autumn can be be beautiful with the blooming flowers and the changing colors of the leaves. Summers are nice and there is a lot to do with Lake Erie and the Metro parks. I have lived here all my life so I can't compare Cleveland with other parts of the country or the world but if you like the changing of the seasons Cleveland has them.

Burrr cold. - 3/3/2010

It seems to me after living here all my life you just never really get used to the weather here. Some say they do but i disagree. It is usally six months or more of day time highs under 55 degrees. There really is a sunny day shortage most of the time also. I have worked in the construction field a long time here and find it to be as boring to. I do love Cleveland though.

What a mistake - 12/11/2009

We moved here eight years ago from Atlanta for a job offer. The company was great, but quickly sold to British firm two years later and both my husband and I found new work downtown because we had already bought a house. The jobs are fine but we get out of Cleveland as often as we can just to recharge our batteries and remind ourselves that not every place in the country is so depressing. We came here young and vibrant and hope to get out with our health intact. It is very difficult to live an active, healthy lifestyle like we were used to living in Florida and California. Half the year it is too cold and the other half, you have to drive 30 minutes away to get out of the pollution and to see some decent scenery. It seems the main activity for most people is watching sports in bars, and drinking. I can't blame them with all these low grey clouds. Also, the health care and schools were touted by our realtor as in the top five in the country. Don't believe it - we have not noticed any difference in health care here than in any other city, and the schools are nothing to write home about...most are run down and underfunded. I'm not sure where people who tout the virtues of Cleveland get their facts. Probably wishful thinking, or they never had a chance to compare it to another city that is not in the "rust belt". On a positive note....people tend to be friendly...albeit a bit set in their ways. I hope someone has the vision and capability to improve it someday.

one thing that comes to mind when i think of cleveland is what the dirty, nasty slush and snow looks like on the side of the road when its winter and just terrible outside.its just concrete and greyness. buildings in the middle of starkness.diesel air. crabby cranky pale people and super snoots that like to get in little groups and talk while they stand really straight with their starbucks cups.

not that bad - 9/7/2009

I am from Erie, PA and my wife from Buffalo, NY and believe it or not the economy and jobs are much worse there than in Cleveland metro area. So for those of you complaining about the bad economy; cheer up - things could be even worse! It is true that jobs are very hard to find here. It took me a year and my wife three years to find a good job even with bs degrees. So if you move here be prepared to search for work for a long time. In the meantime, there are low wage/no benefit service & factory jobs to be had to get you by. At the moment there is only one single area of employment where you can be guaranteed to find professional work quickly and that is health care. Nurses, etc can find work here easily. If you are lucky enough to finally find a good job, you are set because Cleve metro area is so cheap to live. If you make 25K and up you can consider yourself rich here, have a decent lifestyle, and you can even afford a home! There may be more jobs in NYC, Boston, ATL, San Fran, or DC - but an average working person can never own a home - you will always be renting. Don't waste your time trying to work in anything related to manufacturing. Manufacturing here and all over the US is in a death spiral and, unless some major worldwide shift occurs, the future shows nothing but more declines. The big auto plants here are sure to eventually close and then they never hire from the outside anyway. There are some major companies here but, as I said, they are hard to get hired at. Progressive Insurance, Cleveland Clinic, Sherwin Williams, American Greetings, Eaton, some banks and lawfirms. There are allegedly biotech and green technology jobs here but I've never seen them. For job hunters, don't locate way out in the far suburbs like mentor, elyria, or avon. This is very limiting. They are too far away to be able to reasonably drive to say, the other side of town. Even better - locate between Cleve and Akron so that you can double your options of finding work. Avoid the I-77 corridor areas like Medina. This road turns to gridlock every single day from people trying to drive north to downtown in the morning and south in the evening. I live in west cleve suburbs and drive to akron for my work. Cleve metro area is divided in half; the east side and west side. There are issues with the way the highways are designed that make it time consuming to travel from one side to the other so people normally stay on their "side." For some reason the locals don't like the other side - whatever one that it is. Cleve itself (the corporate limit) is not livable because of rampant crime and nonfunctional public schools. Murder is commonplace within the corporate limit and police (they do the best they can) are totally outmanned and underfunded because of disappearing tax base. It is majority segregated ghettos. There are some rich white settlements in places like tremont and certain parts of downtown but they are exceptions. This condition is only going to get worse as recently a court case has allowed police and fire workers to live outside the corp limit. Expect an exodus out of the last remaining semi nice parts of Cleve corp limit - north collinwood and west park. This is nothing unique about Cleve - this has happened in every big city - do further research about white flight, suburban sprawl, etc.. There is public transit here but it is only useful to go to downtown. That is really the only place that it goes. It is nice to park at a muni lot and take the train or park&ride bus downtown to avoid rush hour traffic. There are some good schools in the area especially the cuyahoga county community college system. There really isn't much in the way of a four year residential public college in Cleve and no Ohio state system school here. Cleveland State is a good commuter school. The closest thing would probably be Kent State or University of Akron. Forget about Cleveland Institute of Art 31K/yr or Case Western University 36K/yr. They are for wealthy people only. It's not really affordable for anyone middle class.

Re: Relocating to the Southern State's - 8/12/2009

I would like to know if relocating to the south. Which state is better North Carolina or Atlanta. If you are looking for a relaxed, calm atmosphere. I prefer to be away from the college town's. I really like Cary, Nc. Although I hear Atlanta suburbs are really nice also.

Sorry some people do not like... - 6/23/2009

I'm sorry to hear that there are people who do not like this city. I grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland. I had the privilige of going to Indians games in the summer, and Browns games in the Fall/winter. I also enjoyed some of the best music ever, from blues, to rock. Lets also mention all the fairs and festivals that are free in the summer; from the Cleveland Rib Burn Off, to the Feast of the Assumtion in Little Italy. St. Patricks Day parade is also a well known event, that the local schools are closed to celebrate! Do they do this all over? Raleigh? Charleston? Charlotte? These cities do not even come close... so you think you might be happier with nicer weather? Weather may be better, but what good is it if you have nothing to do. I have to say, I moved to Cary/Raleigh 5 years ago. Not much to do, No music, (only if you like family friendly, for this bible belt city) Summer fairs and festival don't happen here. Only 1-2 a year and you do not even know about it because they don't advertise. Also, it is very, very hot here. I cannot wait to leave here, and find a more interesting city that has some flavor.

Run!! Run as far away as fast as you can ! - 3/25/2009

I have lived in this cesspool of a town all my life, if I could make enough money I would be out asap. I am still working on that part. There is absolutely nothing to want to bring people here. Horrific economy and joblessness. Public schools are a disaster. Crime is awful. Weather is worse. You get what feels like 15 minutes of summer. Then what feels like decades of cold, nasty winter, don't forget all the lovely lake effect snow. Our politicians our currently being raided by the FBI, they are all scheming money hungry thieves.I wouldn't even recommend my enemies live here. I probably could only think of 3 places less appealing, Detroit, New Jersey and hell. The single positive thing I can say about Cleveland is we have one hell of a basketball team. Go Lebron, surely he will leave for greener pastures soon too...
