No jobs to be found here - 8/30/2008

I'm an IT professional with 25 years experience. I have sent out approximately 30 resumes every month for 3-4 months and have had only one company even bother to reply with a "No, thanks." My husband is a district manager and can't possibly find time to interview all the job inquiries he's receiving. The economy is bad elsewhere but it's rock bottom here. Our only hope is leaving.

Not so bad - 7/14/2008

Ok I was raised in Cleveland well actually just 25min south in Hinckley Ohio but I went to church every Sunday on Public Square (Old Stone First Presbytarian Church) I have lived ther for well over 20 years. Since leaving the military I have moved and lived in The Woodlands Texas for 5 years Sparks Nevada for 2 years and I currently reside in Orange Park Florida. Cleveland is a great place to live near I do not know what it's like to live downtown but I know its a nicer downtown area than so many other larger metro area's. The museaums (Natural History,Art,Science Center,Crawford.) They have something for anyone, the zoo, rain forest and nearby Rock and Roll hall of Fame,Football Hall of Fame, Progressive Field,Browns Stadium,Quiken Loans stadium, and How wcan we forget just take a 40minute drive West Northwest to Cedar Point Rollercoaster capital of the world! And if you like sports fishing or water sports enjoy 9940 square miles of Lake Erie!! Ohio has a lot of ammenities that other states wish they had, Cleveland population has dropped but there are plenty of local companies, celebrities and resident's that are trying to revitalize Cleveland it's a great place and I always come back to visit there is always something to do!

Democrats paradise - 3/25/2008

The city is full of them. If you enjoy a city that is consistently ranked as the poorest city in the U.S. A city that has a filthy downtown, terrible weather poor schools, high foreclosure rates, high crime, dismal infrastructure, a lake with few beaches open to the public and liberal democrat politicians that are clueless yet content in status quo. Cleveland would be for you. Cleveland is a city that used to be. The future is not getting better here. Democrat all the way to bankruptcy and proud of it. Welcome to Cleveland

Don't believe the hype!! - 1/4/2008

CLEVELAND SUCKS!!! I've been forced to live her my entire life but now since i am iin my last year of high school, i can't wait to get the heck outta here. There is nothing to do here. All the malls are losing stores because no one is shopping in them so there really isn't any where to shop. The schools suck. I'm African American and sometimes in school i am embarrassed to call myslef that!! Some people in my class are still trying to read!! How insane is that? All it does here is throw down snow storms and rain and an occasional sunny day. Don't move here unless you have no other options.

Great City !! - 7/27/2007

Cleveland is a great city with lots to see and do. The city has first rate cultural and medical institutions. The Cleveland museum of Art is rated one of the best in the nation and the Symphony orchestra is among the best in the world. The city has a phenominal metro park sysem that circles the city . There are great biking and hiking trails with unsurpassed scenery and beauty. Summer time is my favorite . The weather is great and there's pleanty to do The islands like Put N Bay off the shores of Lake Erie are fun to visit. There are hip, trendy neighborhoods like Ohio city and Tremont with cool eclectic restaurants and cafes. Housing is very affordable and Cleveland has some of the best home vaules in the US. Definitly a good place to live and work!

Best city in Ohio-A great place to raise kids, but - 5/29/2007

Cleveland is a tragic city. Once one of the greatest metropolises in the United States, Cleveland has now sadly decayed to a shadow of its former self. Example: my grandparents lived in Cleveland as young people and moved to Los Angeles in middle age. When they come back to visit they always comment on how the place has lost so much of its former glory. Regardless, Cleveland has retained much of its glorious past in its cultural institutions, including the Cleveland Orchestra (one of the best in the world), Playhouse Square (productions could be better but are still great, especially for a city this size), Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and many wonderful museums. The suburbs around the city are good for raising kids due to a low cost of living and top-notch public schools. What makes the Cleveland area so great for a middle-class family is that it can take advantage of the cheap housing and good schools in the suburbs while still enjoying the cultural benefits associated with the city itself. Cleveland has a New England feel to it rather than a Midwest feel because it is part of land formerly owned by Connecticut hundreds of years ago. Its downtown resembles the "classic American big city," which is why the Spiderman movies used Cleveland as a stand-in for New York. Cleveland is not great for young professionals because the place is hands down not as exciting as New York, Chicago, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. The lake is a great asset to the city-beaches are not something typically associated with Ohio but they do exist in Cleveland. The weather is horrific-the lake-effect snow dumps more snow than you could of thought possible and winter lasts very, very long...usually the first snow is in November and the last snow in April, with occasional 60 degree days in December or January or a week of sun in late November. Wintry weather is sporadic in November/early December and March, but basically constant from about Dec. 15 to March 5 The terrible humidity of summer can start as early as May and last into September. Spring and Fall are beautiful but short, especially spring. Recommended for: upper middle/middle class/poor families raising kids.

New Yorkers, Cleveland, etc. - 4/23/2007

Check these message boards for pretty much each major city and you will find that pessimists are attracted to this website. It's difficult to find positive comments for any city. It's almost as if they seek out this site to bash [insert the name of any city]. Cleveland is a great city with a lot to offer, and anyone with an open mind and an appreciation for history can see that. Northeast Ohio's current (and ongoing) economic situation contributes to a negative impression for those who are ignorant of the region, but I suppose that's why state/local governments should take it upon themselves to better advertize all the Buckeye State has to offer. Being modest people, we tend to sell ourselves short in that area. Don't be too harsh on the New Yorkers... in fairness, they bash every other city on this website just as much as they do Cleveland. I live in Orlando (although I'm from Ohio) and they complain just as much about "lack of culture" and "lack of [insert something ridiculous]" in Florida also. What they really mean to say is "there is no place like home, I'm a miserable person, I miss being in NYC, and I thought every place on earth was a carbon-copy of my neighborhood in the Bronx". Some people have little or no tolerance for any place that isn't "home". In their case, "home" is NYC. There happens to be a lot of them, so they are fairly vocal, and we hear from them frequently on the subject. Being unaccustomed to putting down roots and embracing the spirit of community, these people will leave Cleveland and move on to some other city, where they will be equally miserable until they eventual give up and move home.

Go back to New York then... - 3/28/2007

To the New Yorkers that have posted here, you are getting a bad vibe from Clevelanders because of your New York attitude. It's so thick, it is evident in these postings. Please, go back to your over-crowded, high cost of living, and incredibly arrogant brethren on the east coast. I have lived in the Cleveland area for 17 years. Yes, Cleveland has its issues like any other city has theirs, I wont disagree with that.

Lackluster city - 3/25/2007

Cleveland is a depressing place to live, i am from NYC - this is the only city I have lived where the first thing people say is "Why would you want to live here"? that pretty much says it all. i agree totally with the other poster about the west and east side. And to expand on that, I hate shaker heights! These are the most phoniest elitist people you will ever meet, the minute I say I am from NY they put on this air that they are so sophisticated and wordly. They change their voices and start talking through their noses. This is a place full of wannabes. Its a dump, can't find decent work the salaries suck, the people have no personalities - it is the stalest place I have ever been I have travelled internationally. My ex is from here so we moved here when we had our daughter. I am relocating in the summer.

Cleveland- hidden qualities - 1/31/2007

Like another poster, I come from the beautiful Northwest, where I have lived most of my life. I have now lived in Cleveland for two years. Sure, there are no gorgeous mountains, the customer service is so bad I wonder sometimes if I am on candid camera, and there are some very desperately poor neighborhoods here. But there are also incredibly adorable neighborhoods of old-fashioned tudor houses and cute neighborhood downtowns. House prices are very low- especially compared to the NW. The lake is surprisingly pretty. The metroparks are crazy! They are way better than any park system in any NW city. There seems to never be any traffic at all. The job market isn't bad for college graduates, though I think it is bad for non-college graduates. And the weather- well it's pretty grey, and pretty cold in the winter, and pretty hot in the summer, but it is still better than gloomy NW weather! I never really experienced the seasons before- they are pretty cool. I am glad they don't all mush into one year-long damp, cool climate, like NW climates. Oh and the medical care here is very very good, and the museums aren't bad either. Except the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I thought that was pretty lame. Buncha clothes people wore when they sang. Anyway, I have a lot of fun here. But you have to do your research and learn about the area- the cool stuff doesn't jump out at you.

The Armpit of America... - 9/26/2006

I recently moved from the beautiful Pacific Northwest to Cleveland, OH. The move was due to a job transfer with my company and I regret it everyday of my life and it has not even snowed yet. I like my house and my neighborhood but it pretty much ends there. The cost of day to day living is far greater than Oregon. I pay more for utilities and food. The only thing cheaper is gas. Also the customer service here is hard to find almost to the point of being non-existant. Whereas in the Northwest the customer service abounded. Driving here is also a treat -- people drive slower but are very rude. No thanks for letting me merge wave and they will practically run you off the road. Theonly thing worth anything in the Mistake by the Lake is the healthcare. The Cleveland Clinic is an outstanding facility with caring and compassionate employees. I just got here and I can't wait to leave...

Cleveland does NOT Rock!! - 8/2/2006

I've been living here roughly over 2 years, and I have yet to find a good job! I'm educated, professional, hardworking and I get along with people easily... yet because I didnt go to Case Western or Cleveland Institute of Art, I must not know squat (nevermind I went to an awesome art school in NY... the state I originate from!) At first... this town seemed cool... cheap housing, lots of free activities, the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame... however, that appeal only lent itself so far! There aren't any jobs, the crime rate is high, the majority of people seem uneducated, and my biggest beef is the piss-poor attitudes of people in this city. Everyone bitches about how bad they have it, yet the only thing they do to remedy their situation is to crack open a Pabst Blue Ribbon Double Deuce, and cry in it! At first I thought this town was 'laid back'... I was wrong... it's not laid-back, its just LAZY! Trying to make a friend in this town is near impossible, since no one can get off of their dead-ass to make plans or actually pick up a phone to call you, yet they all bitch that everyone knows everyone, and they all went to school together. However when a newcomer comes along, they get all cliquey, and act like their turf is the toughest and coolest turf on earth! They all think the grass in greener someplace else... well maybe it could be if they weren't pissing all over their lawns and gene pools! And what the hell is up with the fat and out of shape shirtless men, EVERYWHERE! No one wants to see how many ribs you can eat or much PBR you've consumed... put it away!! I've also seen these t-shirts around town "Cleveland... You Gotta be Tough!" Give me a break!(start at the neck!) Why, because there are so many barfights in this town from all the drunken slobs? Oh and I noticed a big difference between the East and West side... downtown is in the centre (which looks like a ghost town after 6pm... you can pretend your last human on earth, with the exception of the beggars and vagrants). The west-side claims to be 'nicer and laid back' and the east side is apparently more 'cosmopolitan'. Let me rephrase this: west-side=lazy white blue collar slobs who are racist, and suburban ... east-side: more culture, but snobbier, oh and they at least allow the minorities live there, but in segregated ghettos... oh how nice of them! Both sides of town are pretty sucky, but the eastside at least has some good museums, however the eastside gets dumped with snow. Either way, this
