Health in Colorado - 12/12/2009

Colorado is a great state for people wanting to stay healthy. There is a wealth of outdoor recreational activities for all levels of fitness. The culture of Colorado is geared toward good health, alternative lifestyles, and supporting local growers.

Perception - 11/5/2009

We live in Switzerland and visit my father, who lives in Fort Collins regularily. From our point of view Colorado has a high quality of life. We are trying to narrow down where in the state would be a good place to move, should we decide to move back to the States. I grew up in MN and have been living in Europe the last 23 years.

Doesn't get much better than Colorado - 10/12/2009

I came out West on a fast horse named Dreaming. I was uncomfortable in my own skin back then, American Indian on one side (storytellers and sadly missing from the landscape by the time I arrived just after WWII ended) and Irish/Welsh/Scottish on the other, I wanted to escape the 60's and all the protests of Boston (my protests were with my family and not global or universal or so I thought) CO captured my fancy and kept it for 32 years; I lived in the high desert of the Grand Valley and adored the smell of sage before breakfast, cattle and horses scattered across my rented land (all 160 acres of it by the vast CO River); I took myself and my young son camping and 2 wheeling in my tiny VW bug, went on jeeps trails I shouldn'ta been on (people talked about where and how high they had seen me up in Battlement Mesa or wherever); I wanted the Old West, the familiar West of my NEngland television set and if I couldn't have that, I was going to recreate the passion all by my lonesome. I had bald eagles over my head daily eying my 16 cats (don't ask how I started with 1 and got to 16), I had good ol' boys and drunks and cowboys and gossips to contend with, afterall, I was a danged "Easterner" even if I was living by myself with no phone, no man and no gun, I was still "suspect" because, well, I was an East Coast lady. And alone. I weathered that storm. I learned about myself, gardening and how to make it on nothing, making "do" and in the end, after I thought they all hated me for being different, I came back with my now grown son and a gentleman from the gravel pit my "home" had become said "Oh, this place belonged to a gal we now call the Little Pioneer" and I practically cried. Colorado HAD understood my spirit afterall. They knew what I was doing there and they got me before I even "got me". I can write more profoundly about the West thanks to my life lessons learned in the sage and the rabbit brush, I couldn't or wouldn't be my "self" without those lean but richly rewarding experiences I couldn't have gotten in my living room, watching the Lone Ranger. I am a Little Pioneer, I own that, I think it defines all of us who come West with a big dream of finding or changing something within ourselves. The Real West exists if only in our hearts souls and in our intentions.

In general the Colorado climate is very nice. But if you don't like any snow, then this is not the place to live.

DON'T MOVE HERE!!!! - 10/21/2008

There are about 15 prisons in and on the outskirts of this place, and the mind-set is "Arrest, Lock-Up, Lock-Down. Colorado has more prisons than any other state in the nation. That is their "business." They need statistics to continue this business. Lots of testosterone just waiting for an opportunity to express power. Fremont County is extremely poor and has no ordinances governing licensing of contractors, so anyone can hang a shingle. They are also notorious for taking your money and running instead of doing the job. The Building Dept. says, "Oh, he's done that to lots of people, but we don't have laws to stop it." Yet, they arrested a 60+ yr old grandmother whose home was intruded by 3 women who thought because she was crying (over a leaking roof) that she needed to be put away in a psychiatric institution and tried to take her away. She was mortified, humiliated, had to spend a night in jail, had to pay for bail, had to undergo many court appearances and faced 6 years in prison - all because, after warning these 3 women 3 times, she got out her gun to get them out of her home. The sheriff never asked her what happened. They believed the women, who had only taken 2 classes with this lady over a year earlier and didn't really even know her. I know it sounds like it could never happen, but it did. Then they refused to allow her to press charges for breaking and entering and attemptede kidnapping against these women "because it would just look like revenge." I've been here 2 years and can't wait to get as far away from this attitude and stupidity. I feel like I moved to a Twilight Zone!

No mosquitos! - 4/7/2008

If you like snow and low humidity, Colorado is the spot for you. Summers can be hot but with it feels cooler because of the lower humidity. Conversely, the winters are milder because of the higher altitude. The sun feels warmer in the winter so if you're outdoors in December, you might have to remove your jacket. We don't have that many mosquitos here, especially up in the foothills. We live in Coal Creek Canyon and we saw perhaps 2 mosquitos all summer last year. It's very common to have snow one day and 60-degree weather the next. This truly is a great place to live.

Best Decision I Ever Made - 1/1/2008

As a software consultant, I have traveled to many states/countries over the years, and often take vacation in the southwest U.S., mostly in Colorado. I have moved from a small rural community in Ohio to northcentral Colorado a little over a year now. It took me nearly twenty years to move my family to this beautiful state. My only regret is that I wished I had done this sooner. The quality of life is second to none here in the picturesque state. Abundant wildlife can be seen just about anywhere you venture to. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, combined with breathtaking views in the mountain, canyon and valleys, it's a clear reminder of why I moved my family here in the first place. Another thing about northcentral Colorado is that it is conveniently located geographically from many national parks and monuments in the neighboring states like Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and South Dakota. All are easily within 6-8 hours drive, and ideal for long weekend trips or vacation. Today, when I travel across the U.S., I am thankful each time I return home from a business trip, and enjoy Front Range view enroute to northern Colorado. There is no doubt in my mind that I have made the best decision in my life by moving here. A word of advice for those who are contemplating on moving: It pays to do countless hours of research and homework prior moving, especially when one has to consider for job, school, family and community. Best of luck on your endeavors. Mike Smith

Housing overpriced - 12/9/2007

Being from the South, I am used to much more home for the money. When I have to settle for one half the house for double the money, it does not work. Looking to relocate close to mountains in a growing area. Probably either Greenville, SC or Fayetteville, AR.

Searching for a great family friendly and diverse - 12/2/2007

I live in colorado springs. I am married with an autistic child. I am a black female disabled veteran ( I was in the Air Force) my husband is in the Army. We have lived here for 3 years And I love the scenery but it is hard to find jobs and the rental and housing is sky high. I am an army bratt! I started school in Germany and graduated high school in Hawaii I know expensive and this is it. When our son was in kindergarten I picked him up from school instead of my husband and the next day the kids Jumped him.they said he was not yellow white he is yellow black and used the N-word. I was shocked my husband looks mixed or latino and my son looks just like him. I sometimes get those attitudes when my husband and me go out to eat at some places such as Briargate area, Woodland Park, Littleton, etc. I am surprised I only lived here previously when my dad was stationed here when I was 9 I am now in my early 30's. I like to find a place that is cultural, family friendly, We like to eat out sometimes as family and others as mommy and daddy time, education is a must with and autistic 7 year old, and jobs. we are looking for a good place to raise a family. I would consider other cities in colorado or any state for that matter any suggestions?

Great place to raise a family - 10/25/2007

I just love Colorado. If you love the outdoors Colorado is hard to beat. Great place to raise a family. Lots of fit and attractive people who are not scared to carry on a halfway intelligent conversation. Lots to see and do. Altitude and dryness make the cold not feel all that cold. A beautiful state with breathtaking views. Lots of public land set aside for all Americans to enjoy. People seem to not be all that materialistic. Native Coloradons don't brag about their state. It pretty much speaks for itself. Colorado is not perfect but it comes damm close to it. This is a state you can feel proud to live in.
