I don't know how people can complain. - 11/27/2011

Let me tell ya. I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Moved to Chicago in 1997 and just recently relocated to Largo, FL and I have read some of the things that people have posted about areas of Florida and in a way... It's kinda funny. Complaint: Traffic. This one is hilarious to me. I think out of all the complaints I've heard "Florida Traffic" wants to make me laugh the most. I don't think the 2 words even go hand in hand. Yeah, driving to Tampa from Largo will take about 45 minutes of your life between 7-10am but try having a 55 MPH speed limit and going 12 miles in about 4.5 hours. No special occasion, just a typical day. Complaint: Cost of living. Seriously? Hmmm. On average a pack of cigarettes in the city of Chicago is roughly $8.25 - $11.50 depending on where you go. Gas is anywhere between $4.16 - $4.86 depending on where you are again (87 octane). Obviously the closer you get downtown the worse off you are. My wife cooks at home and in Chicago she was running to the store every 2 day's to get fresh food and spent about an average of $20-$25 a day just for food... That's almost $750 a month just to eat... And I'm not talking about restaurants. These are home cooked meals. Housing, Was paying $950 for a 650 Sq. Ft. one bedroom apt. About $125 in gas and roughly about $120 in Electric. That's with all of the energy saving light-bulbs and all that good stuff. Here, I'm about half rent with only electric to worry about and I haven't seen a bill over $75 yet. Complaint: Weather. Yup, even saw a complaint that the weather is horrible in FL. lets see... Fl: 85 and sunny. Chicago: -25 and 12 inches of snow coming. during the winter months in Chicago you'll see an average of about 7-8 hours of sunlight. Have you ever seen the sun set at 4pm in Florida? I have in Chicago... Many many times. Complaint: Taxes. Largo area, FL 7%. Chicago, IL 12.75% + water tax, alcohol tax, milk tax, etc etc. I went into a local grocery store in Chicago because I wanted to buy a case of water. The case of water had a $2.50 price tag on it. By the time I paid for the transaction I spent $4.98... Once again. 12.75% sales tax + City Tax + Water Tax + county tax. I don't own property in this economy and if this is the way our economy is going to go then I will ALWAYS rent. However, Average property tax in Chicago for 2011 was roughly $7000.00 Every 6 months in the average neighborhood. Not sure what it would be in Largo so I won't make a comment on this but from what I see I

Climate in Florida - 10/28/2011

The Climate in Florida is really hot and humid in the summer. Even midnight it's sometimes 90°. The best time is in winter. So i don't recommend anybody with a bad immune system, weak hear etc. to move to Florida because it could be dangerous in the Summertime. Best time to travel is Winter though.

To the guy complaining about New York in Orlando P - 10/17/2011

Come on Miguel... Lets be real: yes Orlando is great but New York is not as bad as you say it is. I do not remember people being run-over by cars. Or knocked down for walking at their own pace amongst those walking in a hurry. I have NEVER heard of anyone being KILLED in the subway for making eye contact.. In the train I have not encountered people with their eyes closed or not making eye contact just to be giving a chance to continue living. It is not that dangerous in the subway - I've taken it at 2 am after my restaurant shift many times. I have found similar people just getting off work and peacefully going home in the train. Yes in the city people are in a hurry but I am not certain that I have seen too many people being Knocked down for walking at their own pace. I have been elbowed a few times and heard the word "sorry" from those who elbowed me. I have never been run over by cars just a few horns honking maybe. By the way drivers have the ''right away'' and I am smart to respect such rule. Also I am smart to look both ways to make sure there is no chance of being RUN OVER by an APPROACHING car. Drivers are not known to run over people ''just because''.. that is absurd. Some may be rude but certainly not killers. I lived there and did not find the EXTREME rudeness OR LACK OF SAFETY you mentioned.. Yeah SOME people there are rude-unhappy but there are also KIND & FRIENDLY folks who live peacefully and are in harmony with others. I was one of those and the many others I enjoyed company. I have encountered both but mostly I have attracted nicer people. Rats in the subway..? yeah but mostly in the tracks. Those you need not look at for they are gross... unless you give them a real ''threatening stare'' they may jump and bite (or kill) you... just like all the ''assassins'' in the subway. ''watch out: warriors taking the train ready to fight or kill..'' OH MY>>> what an exaggeration.. Who is the one with the attitude. Now I do apologize if you were beating or knocked down or ran over by cars.. or someone you knew was killed while taking the subway for looking at another. Then you may have a reason to be angry against the city... otherwise I think you may just be exaggerating .. '''JUST A TAD.... '''' I must add that I was in New York 9/11 and that was the most threatening situation I had encountered after being there for 7 years. I moved out of the city one year later... but I still think that apart fro

Florida WARNING! Only half that move to Florida st - 7/30/2011

The other half leave, usually a lot poorer and emotionally exhausted. Florida is one of the most traveled to destinations in the world. Because of that, many assume that living there will be similar to vacationing there. That's not always the case. Moving there, especially if you are selling a home where you live now to buy a home in Florida can cost you a fortune. I have seen people move to FL, buy their dream home then decide they can't stand it there and want to sell, selling for far less than they paid. So couldn't sell at all because the value dropped below what they owed on the mortgage, and that was before the credit crisis. Add in moving cost and a nest egg can get wiped out. Half the people who move to FL love it. Florida has no income personal income tax and provides it's citizens with asset protection just for being a resident, best in the US! If you are thinking of moving there, you just need to get info to help you decide which group you are likely to be in, BEFORE you move. Ron Stack, Author

Orlando, FL relocation - 2/15/2011

As another former Californian, I think you need to consider your values when considering a move to any of Florida. As some of the other posts noted, the schools might be an issue if you have small kids, (or plan on it.) Most of FL is more like another country than just another state. If you're Ok with that, the tax picture will make you happy. Certainly less than you're used to in CA. The weather? That's a personal preference. Crime is not any worse than big cities in CA, but the metro areas do have their problems. Overall, it's a personal choice.

moving to Orlando? - 12/3/2010

DO NOT MOVE TO ORLANDO,FL. the schools here not that good. when I moved here with my family back in 2001 from NY, we were appalled to find out that the schools here were rated #48/49 out of all the fifty states because there's just too much spanish kids who can't read, speak and understand English. Also, if you are not bilingual, you can't get no jobs and also, this is not the state for educated black people. I am highly considering moving back to NY or North Carolina. Florida is only good for vacationing and touring...that's it. Good luck

Too much heat, too much humidity, too many people! - 11/18/2010

I have lived in the Jacksonville Florida area since I was 10 years old and I am now past the 50 year old mark. The weather here is intolerable during the last spring through early fall months because of the heat and humidity. I don't know if it's my age or an actual change in the temperature because of global warming or what but, it's almost to the point where you break out sweating as soon as you walk out your front door. It gets so hot during the summer months temperature wise, then add the humidity and it's unbearable and I can't even make myself leave the house anymore unless I absolutely have to do so! The only people that might enjoy living here are the people that submerge their life in water sports so that they are in the water when they are outdoors. Enjoying the in the great parks, beaches, amusement parks etc. isn't even an option anymore during the daytime hours in these months, it's miserable! Additionally, the population has gotten so large that the trips across town, that use to normally take you a little while because of the size of Jacksonville land-wise, now takes you twice as long. And, the people didn't use to be so rude!
