Just some advise from a transplant - 10/18/2007

For those of you who are thinking of relocation to Greenville, SC. It's tough out here, like some else posted, if recruiters or employers see that you did NOT graduate from Clemson, that you will not be considered for a good job. I relocated here from S. Florida and that's what me and my husband have gone through for the past 1 1/2.

Greenville is a Great Place to Live! - 10/9/2007

I totally agree with Jonathan from Easley. I lived in Greenville for several years and absolutely loved my experience there. We relocated to NC for an educational opportunity, but now that that's over, we will certainly move back to Greenville if possible. Greenville is a great place to live and not at all "small-town". The population listing is deceptive because that only represents the city population, whereas most people live in the county limits, not the city limits. The downtown area is very small in size, but is packed with fantastic restaurants (everything from pizza joints to fine dining), shops and other businesses. There are lots of nice, yet affordable neighborhoods throughout the city, and the whole area is just beautiful. And the city is situated in a great location, close to Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC, as well as the beautiful western NC mountains. And the coast is only 3-4 hours away! If you enjoy outdoor activities, there is plenty to do and the weather is relatively nice all year round. The people are very nice and friendly, and there is a lot of diversity due to the international businesses that have chosen the Greenville/Spartanburg area as a base of operations. Greenville is an especially nice city for retirement because of its low cost of living and wide variety of recreation and entertainment options. Its a great place to live and I would highly recommend it to anyone!

Question on crime - 7/20/2007

I am reading such glowing reviews about Greenville, then I look at the crime index from this website and it is a 7 which is fairly high! For those of you who have written good reviews about this city; what is your feeling about this? Are you experiencing a great deal of crime or is it isolated to just a certain area, or what?

Greenville, SC is a good city if you have children - 7/20/2007

Greenville, SC is overall, a very nice city to live in. It is a great place it you choose to raise your family in a nice, safe place. It's a pretty place, although there isn't a lot to do unless you have children, and associate with others who have children. Atlanta is two hours away, Charlotte, NC is two hours away, and the closest beach is about 4 hours away. So, if you want to drive a few hours you can have some fun. But, you will have to drive to go anywhere that really has anything interesting to offer. On the reverse side, although Greenville has come a long way as far as diversity goes, it still has a long way to go. Greenville is in the middle of the "Bible Belt", thus the city government tends to have a heavy hand in trying to keep out events, concerts, establishments that is doesn't feel is 'christian' in nature. Besides, Greenville, SC "IS" home of Bob Jones University. Need i say more?

Why I choose to move to Greenville - 6/29/2007

Throughout my life I moved around a lot, and I do mean a lot. I've lived in GA, KY, PA, TX, OK, FL, and now SC. On top of that my parents lived in TN, LA, MS, and AR. Greenville has been a town that has brought the family back together. What brought us all here? It should be asked why did it take us so long to get here. I worked in outside sales in Atlanta, and the daily grind of Atlanta traffic was beginning to show it's ware on me. I knew that I wanted to have hair into my 30s, and that wasn't looking like an option the way that things were going. I began to reevaluate what I wanted in the future, and where I had previously lived where I was fond of. I kept coming back to Lexington, KY. The thing is, I hate the cold, and I did not want to miss out on my alma mater's football games. I also wanted to be centralized to be able to do everything from going to the lake, the beach, and the mountains. As you can tell from what I previously wrote, traffic was another concern of mine. I longed for the days when I didn't spend half as much time getting to and from work as I did actually working. My search began, and having had narrowed it down to three cities (Greenville, Greensboro, and Chattanooga) I spent some time visiting each. For me the choice became very clear very fast. Greenville had access to all of the recreational places that I enjoyed, a family feel, a bustling downtown (unlike many other communities founded on textiles it has reinvented itself), and virtually no traffic. It hit the nail on the head. Now I can't say that work won't ever take me away from here, but I do know that deciding on moving here has proven to be one of the best choices that I have made in my life.

MI to Greenville, SC - An Epidemic? - 6/8/2007

There appears to be a major population shift from Michigan to South Carolina, and why not? Michigan offers unemployment, limited opportunities for professionals, high cost of living, income and property taxes that will tax the miserable state out of existance, snow and Detroit. Ok, maybe a bit of exageration about the taxes, but the point is Michigan has almost nothing positive to offer and South Carolina offers much in the way of quality of life. The real problem could be how the current SC populaton deals with the rather large influx of us Yankees? I would only suggest we come together based on our differences - little as they are. None the less and like it or not, a culture change appears to be under way in the Carolinas, specifically the great state of South Carolina. Being empty nesters (praise God), my wife, sister and brother-in-law are making plans to relocate from Michigan to the Greenville, SC area. To date, there are two "absolutes" that must happen before the move. 1) Must have secured reasonable employment. 2) Must have sold our homes in Michigan. Based on current economic conditions in MI, and my limited research, absolute number two could be a bigger hurdle to over come than number one. Any and all advice and/or suggestions are most welcome. For example, not being able to spend a great deal of time in Greenville, what are some things I should be aware of - good and bad? What are some reasonable expectations in terms of employment, housing, and life in general? Please contact me at daveg2u@sbcglobal.net. Thank You.

Greenville feels like home, though we just moeved here from FL last July! WE have NOT found discrimination, but freindly people everywhere. We live on the East side and it's a great place...LOVE our "patio home" and neighbors. Climaate, shopping, cost of living, services avaliable are all here not to mention the GREAT down town area! What's not to love?? We plan to stay for good and are thrilled to be here!! Best choice of a move we've ever made. We lived in SE Michigan for 27 yrs: done w/snow/cold! You have 4 seasons here, but so mild, it's great! NO REGRETS!

Relocating to SOUTH CAROLINA - 5/15/2007

Hello All!!! My husband and I are considering a move to Greenville in the late summer/early fall. We have visited Greenville in the past and loved the atmosphere. We found some apartments that we really liked but are still weighing our options. We are looking for any suggestions you might have have regarding good areas to live in. (low crime, etc) Also if you have any recommendations on Apartment Complexes we would love to hear those as well. We are late 20somethings who would be relocating with 2 medium to large size dogs....any good places for the dogs to play? Thanks for your help!

Outstanding city - 5/6/2007

I voluntarily relocated with my job from California to Greenville, SC. I was born and raised in Ca. and was fed up with the smog, gridlock, and rude people. I didn't know what to expect, only saw pictures and read city guides, etc. I must say, I'm blown away. I would hold up downtown Greenville to any so-called high end, metro area (Westwood Village, downtown Pasadena, Beverly Center in CA.) It's relaxing, evenly paced, and very eclectic. This is what other cities think they want to be but are twisted in their thinking about where to sink everyone's taxes. The planners in Greenville have focused on what the people want ( take a hint, oh high and lofty ones in charge :). I've been here a month and have spent several days there just walking. I attended the annual Artisphere and was equally impressed. I love the beauty, shear amount of things to see and do,the great shops and restaurants, and above all, the warm and friendly people.

Greenville is a southern Gem! - 3/21/2007

My in-laws moved to Taylors, SC (north of Greenville) in November of 1996. Our family has visted them a couple of times a year since then. Everytime we come, the vibrancy of Bergamo, Italy's sister city just really excites us. From its ever expanding corporate sector and quaint, yet very progressive downtown, to its proximity to both Atlanta and Charlotte, Greenville is the ideal relocation destination. In fact, I will be exploring the viability of expanding of my family's very successful commercial janitorial business to Greenville on our next visit next month.

Keep it real - 1/31/2007

Hello, My husband and I are looking to relocate to the South. I've lived in Columbus, Ohio my entire life and my husband has lived here most of his life except when he was in the military. One of the places we are looking at is South Carolina. I guess I would like to know if anyone has any advise for us about moving to South Carolina. North Carolina is another place were looking at. Also Texas, a few others so if anyone has any advice on another southern state please share. My husband is a electrical apprentice. I'm going to school to be a Nurse. We have 4 kids so we were willing to rent before we buy but want to own a home. We would like to be outside the city but close enough to get to what we need to. Maybe buy some land eventually. Also were a mixed race family. I guess I'm a little nervous, all I know about how the South deals with us would be what I see on TV-and the not so warm welcome some of my family who is from the south gave my husband (not to offend any Southerners) but I loved the experience I've had on vacations and my husband is ready to go. I know you have prejudice anywhere but seriously I want to know what anyone knows or thinks about that particular aspect of it. Also the job situation, schools. Anything else you want to add.

Visited Greenville & loved the city - 1/3/2007

I enjoyed my time spent in Greenville. I found the downtown to be very clean, beautiful, and charming. There were also plenty of shopping and dining opportunities available. I especially loved Falls Park on the Reedy River. It seemed surprising to find such a lovely park with waterfalls nestled in the heart of downtown. Greenville seemed to be a very family oriented area too and everyone was very nice and friendly. The city has a quaint charm and the downtown has somewhat of a European flair I just loved. In my opinion, Greenville is certainly a place worth visiting.

Great surprise..lived in most southern states - 1/2/2007

Hi, I originally was born in Chicago and currently live in Colorado. I am now 30 years old, married, with a two year old. A little more background, I have lived in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and my parents are in GA and FL themselves. Frankly, I am just trying to say that I have lived in the South most of my life. I graduated college and headed for Colorado and had the opportunity to transfer to Greenville, so my wife (she is from the west) and I headed out to see what the area was like. I had a huge fear it would be like a few places I have lived that had problems with being racist, horrible education, lack of a jobs, and rampant crime. The moment we got to Greenville, the people were very friendly, typical of a lot of southern places, the city clean and progressive. A teacher took the time at a restaurant to talk to us about her town. So did four outher people. They gave us their phone numbers for when we move locally. I was completely floored by the city. We are looking into relocating shortly. After living in Colorado (two cities) for five years, it was great to find a southern city that did have some of the problems other ones do. Not too mention the proximity to the mountains and the beach. Hope it helps!

The real scoop on Greenville - 12/29/2006

I've lived here for 7 years (in SC for 10 years). If you are any kind of engineer, have a strong background in manufacturing, or are in the health care field, or if you have attended Clemson University (the only university that anyone here has ever heard of...lol) then this is the city for you. If you have a business background, it might be better to look elsewhere. My husband and I received MBA's in 2001, and we've found that they're not worth the paper that they're written on. Also: I will receive hate mail for this, I'm sure, but I'm going to say it anyway, because it's the God's honest truth: I came down here from New York City in 1999 because I WANTED to move here. Moreover, I have always had a very "when in Rome" attitude about any place where I've lived (e.g., Washington, DC; Monterey, CA; Lyons and Nice, France). However, I have definitely encountered some anti-Yankee sentiment here. It's not pervasive, but it DOES exist, so be aware. Southern culture is very, very subtle, so you will not find anyone being overtly "ugly" or posting signs that say "Go Home Yankee" or "Yankees not hired here," but I had two recruiters (one from SC, one from MN) tell me in 2005 that the fact that I was from NYC was one of the reasons why I had been unemployed for 13 months. The lady from MN told me that she had had clients flat out say to her (not so subtlely): "Do not send me any 'Yankee' candidates." Sadly enough, old grudges die hard, and I've learned from observing my husband's family that this bitterness is passed on from generation to generation. No, we should never forget a very ugly part of our past, but the irony of the discrimination towards ME is that my ancestors were frolicking around in Germany's Black Forest while the "War of Northern Aggression (as the Civil War is referred to here) was being fought. Hearing it from the recruiter was like a kick in the stomach, and for a while it made me very bitter. I had suspected it for a while, I thought that I was just being paranoid. Note: you will NOT see this kind of discrimination at the big companies like GE, BMW, Fluor, Michelin, etc. -- case in point: I've been hired by three of them. Speaking of Fluor: FANTASTIC company to work for, can't say enough good things about them AND their Fluor-owned employment agency, TRS Staffing. Finally, if you do decide to move here, you MUST network. Believe me when I say that it took me many years and a lot of heartache before I figured out that Greenville is mu

Greenville is better without Roger - 12/29/2006

Thank you very much for leaving Roger (our cloudy weather stats. have improved). Wherever you go... there you are! So I doubt you are happy where you are now. Greenville has been my home for 11 years (moved from Los Angeles). The people are friendly, it has an incredible economy and it is much easier to get ahead than it was in CA. The surrounding communities have individual personalities. I love it here!!
