Air quality - 11/25/2006

I am planing to move out of St. Louis and one of the reasons is the bad air quality (29). I feel like I am getting sick from that. I was thinking about Greenville, and was shocked to see, that it is rated even lower (23). Can anybody tell me, how bad it really is? Thanks!

Greenville is wonderful! - 11/24/2006

Count me as someone who has fallen in love with Greenville. I can say that after having lived in places like Charleston, SC, Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD, and Boston, MA (all great places in their own right). Despite loving my time in each of those other cities, and realizing that they each have great things to offer, Greenville stands out. Do not let Greenville's "city population" of ~56,000 fool you. South Carolina has strict annexation laws, preventing the city from gobbling up adjacent land like most cities. Greenville County's population is over 400,000, and like the city of Greenville, is the most densely populated in the state of SC. The Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area was around 1 million in population as of the last census, and has been growing at a steady rate. And guess what? Greenville is a progressive place. You might be shocked to hear that if your perception of Greenville is conservative politics and Bob Jones University (both have little influence on the area as a whole, especially the latter). The city just banned smoking in all restaurants AND bars, and the county just passed a 2% tax to fund parks and tourism. The region tends to be conservative as a whole, but individual differences are embraced. It is not uncommon at all to see interracial couples or gay couples walking down the street in peace. It is also not surprising to hear people speak different languages and embracing their culture (the international presence is strong, thanks in part to companies like Michelin and BMW having their major North American operations here). The downtown area is amazing. It is clean, charming, and there is a lot to do. The city has put a lot into the urban core over the last 15 years or so, and it has definitely paid off. There are great hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops. I have taken numerous visitors (both personal friends as well as business clients) there and they are almost always blown away. It's almost as if people don't know such a treasure exists here. That secret is quickly becoming more known, though. The city has a wonderful river (with waterfalls) running through downtown, and developments are springing up all around it. The arts scene here is great! And if you are an outdoor enthusiast and/or enjoy the mountains, opportunities abound. I guess I have rambled enough, but I will conclude by saying that this place is much more than I ever expected it to be. I moved here thinking it woul

I totally disagree with Roger..except I too enjoy being arround water. I moved to Greenville from Arizona and adore it! Greenvile has water, too...rivers, streams, creeks..and a lovely drive to the ocean. I don't consider myself a particularly religious person, and fail to see the significance, unless it shows people here have not only faith in themselves, their city AND a higher being. People here without fail have been extremely helpful, friendly, and gracious, and the city offers a wide variety of cultural opportunities as well as universities and great medical facilities. Affordable housing, low unemployment and a vital downtown district. Great shopping and dining. I guess attitude counts for a lot...including keeping s job:-) Thanks, Greenville, for welcoming me home!

Boring, and Religion Rules Here - 9/29/2006

I've lived in several places in my life, and Greenville, unfortunately, happened to be one of them. This was the lousiest, most depressing eight months I've ever spent. (Luckily, I was fired from my awful job.) The people here are staunchly right-wing, and to call them conservative is an understatement. I cannot see how anyone could call this town pretty; it's bleak, and architecturally an eyesore. It's also a long drive to the ocean. Yes, I know the mountains are gorgeous, and close, so that's good--if you happen to like the mountains. (Me, I prefer the water.) I was so glad to leave this town, and I would never, in a million years, even go back to visit. Even if someone gave me a million bucks, I would not move here; life is too short to be perpetually miserable.

Any help will do :) - 5/31/2006

Can anyone recommend the best areas to look at houses in the Greenville area and which areas may be best to stay away from? It would be greatly appreciated. We'd be moving from Florida with 2 children (1st grader and 3 yr old). A safe neighborhood and good schools are important to us (and no hurricanes, hehe). Also, any bad sides of Greenville to keep in mind? Thank you!!!

Great quality of life - 5/20/2006

My family & I moved to Greenville in August 2005 from the Northeast and so far, have found it to be a great place to live in the South. A temperate climate, sunny days, friendly people, an awesome downtown area, close to the mountains and about 3 to 4 hours from great beaches, all in all it is everything we were hoping it would be. We had looked into Florida before moving to Greenville because we love warm weather and going to the beach, but after taking everything into consideration, we realized Greenville would be safer from hurricanes, less humid and congested than Florida, a much more affordable place to raise a family, and with the vision they have for the future, a place that will only continue to get better and better!

Considering moving to Greenville. - 5/17/2006

I am considering moving to Greenville from Florida. I am looking for a place that offers steady employment, great public schools, affordable housing and a pleasant climate. Everything I have read on Greenville sounds like what I am looking for. Is it?

A great place to live - 4/25/2006

We relocated to Greenville from upstate NY almost 8 years ago. The climate is wonderful, the people are friendly and there is always a lot going on. We would never go back north!

Great and getting greater - 4/1/2006

Unbelievable -- what effective leadership can with a downtown. Vibrant and friendly ---favorite part is the River Front Trail---a great asset for exercise, without fighting cars.

Very little interest in preserving trees - you see large parcels stripped almost daily.
