Indianapolis is wonderful! - 1/16/2012

I was born here in 1955 and have lived here all my life. I have read what some have written and I am shocked. Indy is wonderful, lots to do. We have a great zoo, museums, great places to eat from cheap to YIPES,we have plays, etc. If you can't find something to do it's your own fault, not Indy's. Yes,the eastside is not where most want to live BUT,it has ALWAYS been that way. I lived on the Southside till I married, lived on the Eastside then,(never again),and now live on the westside near Eagle Creek and I love it here. Housing is cheap. As far as the people being stuck up,are you crazy?? Indy is and has always been very friendly regardless of race. My ex husband is from California and we went there a few times to see his family, now, talk about snotty and stuck up,California people are all that and worse. I was treated like trash at the malls there and at restaurants. I'd live in a box in Indy before I would live in a mansion in California. I have traveled ALOT and Arizonia,Florida,California are the least friendly. Please, come to Indy and find out how nice people are and how much there is too do.

someone was not so happy living out in Indianapoli - 12/1/2011

There is nothing to do people do not have a lot of money, drunks try for young women from college. Does not sound all that great. I thought to let them know to go to church. Have a cook out having one whole street of pople that live there bring somehting to the cook out. Winter time make a snow man the best snow man that persons wins and the other have to clean out the winners drive way of sown for the rest of the winter. Play cards at each other houses the winner get to tell the ones who lost what to do. This can be for fun the winner tells the other some thing funny to do or can be doing something that the winner does not likes to do so the other can do for that winner. Church stuff is good. Think of it with way when you have a fight with someone and say some thing you shuold not have said at all. You don't feel like you did something great. You feel not so good. When you help someone out in some way you feel good about your self. Well that is your thank you. Goinng to church makes me feel good and it will help others out as it has in the past. The people that wrote on this site there is no art. Well get the women to make some blanks they can look it up on a computer on how and the men mske some wood work or something that they can look up. Sell it, show it off do something with it. People do not like to go for walks out there. Well some people think walking is borning. Have a swimming contest in the summer time and in the winter time have a sled race of some kind. Make life fun for you and that will help you feel better. If will help people change on what they are like from one thing doing nothing not trying to get any where to start by doing stuff. Eating right and being active is healthy then people can think healther too. I wish you all the luck out there. The person was not so happy with Indianapolis and the drunks going after young woman. Men and woman just working at a gass station not trying to go any where from that. All just making it seam like a dead end. Well get active with the people in the city of Indianapolis and lots of luck.

Indy Indy.... - 8/4/2011

Well I been here for 20+ years, native here. I am trying to get out ! The only good thing is the cost of living is dirt cheap but the bad thing is that you will probably want to cut your arm off before living here anyways. We are better than Detroit and places like that. Visit Indy and leave as quick as you came ! First Indy is great if you have no kids and want to live cheap! don't like arts or culture and most places are better if you are rich Indy is no exception. In other words with if you want your children to live in a dry Vanilla wasteland then go ahead. The schools unless your in Hamilton county are downright awful.IPS your child will get a great education in how to be a thug or redneck brat. The townships are the same with little better outcome in Washington townships. There is very little art and museums here only a couple and major operas and art presentations. The nightlife is dismal everything closes around 1am and you basically have two options broad ripple which is a mini strip for drunk college kids or downtown which is a cesspool of thugs or middle or upper class white men trying to pick up a drunk college student see above ! see blond girl kidnappings in the Indianapolis news! The college brats think their crummy IU degree is like Yale or something! All the art money here is wasted on the colts ! The weather is rotten during the winter time so another reason to stay away. The jobs suck don't get me started even for a programmer they insult you offering 10.00 an hour. Everything is divided if you are black come ghetto and rude or you will be an outcast. If you are white come rich and pretty or stay where you are. Oh Hispanics don't bother please you will be automatically said to be illegal. Hamilton county is the only mildly liveable part of the state and expect extreme racism there if you aren't white. The guys are losers and fat but they want a supermodel. They have no goals but to work at the gas station. Many of the women are the same way The Public transport is awful for a city of this size. You will never get home waiting on a bus and forget walking! Indy is walk a phobic no wonder everyone is out of shape. This isn't the place to try to make it in life in it is a great place once you're about 50 or you're kids are just about out of high school and made a decent living. Stay away !

Buyer Beware!!!!! - 10/23/2010

Indianapolis sucks! There are no jobs here!!! I moved here from Chicago, IL in February 2010 and have not found a job yet... Every temporary assignment that is offered to me only pays $8 or $9 an hour. The people here are stand-offish and unfriendly. If you are considering moving here, please way out all your options!

Indy - 7/14/2010

For Indianapolis' demographics the traffic scene isn't too bad. You'll get your occasional set-back but overall flows smoothly, even in rush hour. The cost of living is great. Indianapolis public schools have a higher than average drop out rate.

Boring place to live... - 5/23/2010

Indianapolis has an OK downtown with average restaurants and bars. "Average" defines the Indianapolis area. The Indianapolis area, indeed the whole state, is big on Colts football, NASCAR, Pacers basketball, obesity, asphalt, cement, constant road work, the State fair, lots of TV, fast food, SUV's and pickup trucks, schlock sports bars, and a large minority population. All of the foregoing appeal to the class of people one might expect. The suburbs are typical America, the rich keep to their private clubs and estates, members of the middle class buy the largest homes they can afford, and low income people are about as trashy as anywhere; and, there are a lot of them. Everyone drives and drives and drives. There is little public transport. The suburbs grew far ahead of planning, so the traffic is not good. There are much worse cities, but everything else being about equal, you would do well to avoid Indianapolis.

Crime is on the rise - 5/10/2010

The crime here, in Indianapolis, is on the rise. Every time I turn around something is happening. I can't talk to a neighbor, friend, or family member anymore without being told about someone being shot, robbed, assaulted, and or their home being set on fire. Not to mention what's being reported on the news. It's getting ridiculous and I'm ready for a change. I living about 15 min from downtown and it the crime doesn't get any better the further out you go. I have friends and family that live in the cities surrounding us where the crime rates are not as high but even they are seeing a major rise in crime. Indiana needs to make a change and quick. Until then I wouldn't recommend anybody move here, especially if you have children.

Climate - 1/12/2010

I honestly can not stand cold weather and Indianapolis is definitely a cold place to live in the winter. The change between seasons is brief. It pretty much goes from freezing cold to sweltering hot without much difference between the two. Wish there was more distinct seasons.

Indianapolis north side is peaceful, but can be a - 11/17/2009

One thing I can say about the area I live in Indianapolis is that it is very peaceful. I live in an apartment complex on the north side of Indianapolis near Carmel (96th and Keystone area) and I never have any problems with life. Rent is $765 for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment with a fenced in patio with small garden area where I plant a garden. My apartment is facing a lake and has washer/dryer in my apartment. I have a good job as a special education assistant and make around $14/hr, which I manage to live on while raising my two children. So, I would say that the quality of life here is peaceful, but there are not a lot of exciting things to do in the area. Now and then, there are concerts, plays and shows that come through town, but on the average, there just aren't a whole lot of fun, recreational activities to do on a budget with children without repeating them more than once.

Recreation - 10/19/2009

Nickname for this city is Nap town. Should give you an idea what is available. Indianapolis is a big suburb surrounded by cornfields.Very little out door activities available except the usual. Running, biking, walking etc.Indy has a good rowing center. The club seems active and has big plans for the future. They row at Eagle Creek.Eagle Creek is too windy though. Other clubs call it "Windy Indy". Some clubs I was told do not want to come here to compete. This area is pretty flat. No elevation for about 300 miles east or west.No hiking until you get south of here. No water except for the White River which I have never seen any kind of boat on.

My hometown - 8/9/2009

Indianapolis is pretty strong economically, especially for people who work in the medical research and health care industries. It is moderately conservative, although there is a healthy liberal community here as well. People who wish are young and raising children find many areas very appealing because of the ease of participating in extra curricular activities. THere are very strong private, magnet and charter schools. The Indianapolis Public Schools and some of the township schools are struggling --but the good part of that is that they still have life and are focused on improving. The arts, places like the zoo, Children's Museum and Indianapolis Museum of Art are private and have little support from local government. The good thing about that is that the local government is telling them what to do. And, they are all premier destinations. Those who are in the arts (the artists) are the losers in this town because so few companies and individuals value the arts and what they can do to make this a preferred place to live. Pretty crime is too high here and I'd like to see more prevention (i.e.--better public schools). Historically, the traditional approach toward creating better citizens focuses on punishment rather than prevention.

Racist - 7/27/2009

I have never lived anyplace before where there are such strong dividing lines of race. Blacks live on the west or south side, whites live on the north side, nobody wants to live on the east side. There needs to be integration in this city to stop the hatred.

Don't do it! - 7/27/2009

I hate this place! I have lived in NYC, Phoenix, Southern California, Northern California and of all of the places I have lived this is my least favorite. I was expecting a cool car culture kind of place and instead people are stuck up and full of them selves, I don't get it! Might be okay if you have a family, are not interested in the arts or culture or food or travel or interesting conversation and want a cheap place to hide.

quality of life - 6/16/2009

I grew up in Indiana in the 80s and moved out in 1999. In some ways I miss it. The people are friendly. The cost of living is very "realisitic" and reasonable. And Indianapolis is a growing city and 13th largest in the US. But it seems lately that is where the good ends. Most of Indiana is just flat, dull and nothing to do. Good paying jobs are few and far between. And it has only a few big business Fortune 500 headquarters based here compared to many states. The state must do more to attract future industries and younger workers. Indiana in some ways, is a great place, but is often politically close minded and regressive. It seem as though the state's policymakers either dont care about the state's future or are too shortsighted and narrowminded to think outside the box. But I guess Indiana's problems are the same as everywhere else. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give the Hoosier state a 5. I would rather live there than in places like KY, WV, OH, MI and those great plains states.
