| Life in Knoxville - 10/29/2012
Home grown, corn bread feed. No place like Knoxville, If you came here and didn't like it I guess you just don't like the finer things in life. True Tennesseans are the most awsome people you will ever meet.{ Meaning thoes born and raised here.} You have to love football and the song Rocky Top, Be down to earth. Most of us dont put to much thought into culture things. We have lakes and streams and beautiful Mountains, Gatlingburg, and Dollywood and a whole lot more. Restaurant's galore, what ever kind of food you like we'll have here somewhere. I have lived in other places and I always come home. We have a lot of different religion's here what ever your's might be I'm sure you will find your church. Most people here don't live in the fast lane they like to smell the roses as we go by. Knoxville has a little bit of anything your looking for if you'll take the time to find it. This little town has the same problems as any other. I dont know of any place you can live crime free,& drug free. Now on the down side /Kids run wild in the city streets, { I think most parents have to work and aren't home to keep up w/ them } Traffic is awful, crazy weather, not a lot of good paying jobs,{ they are out there if you have a good education.} I might add we have several mall's. Walmart is where most people shop. When tragety hit's we turn out in great numbers to help.

| Wonderful place. - 10/2/2012
I have lived in Knoxville since 1994. I moved from Fresno, CA after retiring from a career in Law Enforcement. The quality of life is so high here it's off the charts. I actually picked Knoxville as a place to retire and I'm glad I did. Wouldn't live anywhere else. Lots of activities for families and I'm never bored with plenty to do in this part of the world.

| Religion - 6/27/2012
This is a very religious city. On the surface it isn't as evident but, it ties people together here(Christianity). If that's your worldview this is a great place, if not, you will hit brick walls in most relationships including:business interactions and general group ventures.

| Don't Knock Knoxville - 12/12/2011
Heres is my take on Knoxville:
Easy to drive around;
Lots of scenic beauty;
I find Tennesseans friendly and polite.
I think the culture is family friendly and conservative and slow.
Pace of life is slow.
It helps if you like UT Football.
Cost of living is low and so are wages.
Downtown is rundown unfortunately.
No state tax on income.
Sales tax is 9% across the board.
I feel safe here where I live although there is a low income section on the other side of town.
Art museums and culture events on low side.
I grew up close to NYC and have been all over the US; I really like it here. But it is not for everyone and onr would do well to know what you can live with and what you can't if you are thinking of moving here.

| The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - 10/10/2011
The Good: Knoxville has the main campus of the University of Tennessee. This is a city that supports college sports, especially football and basketball. Neyland Stadium at UT seats approximately 108,000 people. The stadium is almost always filled to capacity during home games. Knoxville is close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are great shopping centers and malls here, too.
The Bad: Two cross-country interstates (I-40 & I-75) run concurrently through the heart of the city. When you add all the local traffic, you have a nightmare. Even a minor accident on the Interstate can result in a traffic backup that runs for miles. TDOT recently completed the final phase of its Interstate upgrade so that there is no longer a bottle neck of traffic in downtown which used to have fewer lanes. But there is still far too much traffic to battle if you are a daily commuter. Air pollution is another problem. In the past, Knoxville has been on the EPA's "dirty dozen" list for the worst ozone and fine particulate pollution in the country. This is a bad place to live for people with asthma or other respiratory problems. This has been stated in the local media. I'm sure the excessive traffic has something to do with this.
The Ugly: There are many area in downtown and elsewhere that are a real eyesore. The downtown is not attractive and the development was done in a rather haphazard manner, in my opinion. There are many very old neighborhoods that look like ghettos. But the people who live there can't afford to live elsewhere. The city is a contrast between the rich and the poor.Crime is high here compared to the national average. Also, the cancer rates here are significantly higher than the national average, possibly because of all the toxic waste from nearby Oak Ridge (one of the sites of the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb).
My recommendation: Forget about Knoxville. I have lived here for 22 years and I know from my travels and my research that there many other places that would be far better than Knoxville. Happy hunting.

| Crime is a Problem in Knoxville, Apparently the Ci - 11/19/2010
Having been in law enforcement for many years here in Knoxville, I can tell you honestly, that the crime statistics are way above what is reported. The officers here, are directed to primarily direct their efforts to enforcement of traffic violations and DUIs.Enforcement of these issues make the city a good deal of money. There are quotas to be met, or should I say "goals", which is the new catch phrase of the day. As for crime, many things go unreported, or reported as a lesser offense. A Robbery, becomes just a Theft. Burglary is reported as a Tresspassing.Felony possession of narcotics, gets reported as a simple possession and so on. The reporting method makes it look like our crime rates are not that bad, when in fact this is turning into a dangerous little city. There are many neighborhoods that rarely if ever see a police officer, and property crimes are through the roof because of that fact. The judicial system is a defense attorneys dream come true. Crimes are routinly pled out to ridiculus levels of punishment. There was a murder committed here not too long ago, where the suspect received twelve years of probation rather than incarceration in prison where he belongs. So my advice would be if you kill someone here, don't speed on the interstate to get away, it's a sure fire way to get yourself a ticket... In closing let me just say, there are much nicer cities to move to, where there is more to do and see, and would be a lot safer for you and your family.

| Knoxville: Cost of Living - 11/15/2010
We have lived for over 20 years in Knoxville, TN mostly because of the low cost of living. We have beautiful scenery and mountains everywhere, and the housing costs are very affordable, and still no state taxes.

| knoxville - 9/29/2010
Knoxville is a great little city to live in.
The location and natural beauty that is all around you is unique and worth almost everything. Knoxville is a real city but is so much easier to get around the the larger cities. There are a lot of arts and music people that live and display their talents there in the neat little art shops around market square, the old city and other places. be cause of a very large and major University being there you still get that 'center of the would and current events' feeling. IT's a unique city full of natural beauty.
You'll get used to the color orange and even embrass it.

| A New Yorker's perspective on Knoxville - 9/29/2010
I relocated to Knoxville in 2004. I was born and raised in Queens, and lived on Long Island for 20 years, so here goes.
The bad things about Knoxville:
-Only two seasons, summer and winter.
-Classic small-town inferiority complex.
-Horrible air quality due to the heavy truck traffic on I-40/75.
-TN Sales tax at a whopping 9.5%.
-Knoxville is practically owned and operated by the Univ. of Tennessee, AND the Haslam /Pilot Corporation.
-Other than Mexican or BBQ, the food is marginal at best.
-Most Knoxvillians have a blinding, almost cult-like devotion to UT football.
-No one comes out in the summer because it is too hot/humid not to sweat through your clothes in under 10 minutes.
-Minorities are seen, but not heard in Knoxville.
-One party rule - Republican
-Come here already married, because I hear the singles scene is terrible.
-Downtown is basically two or three streets about a half-mile wide.
-Dollywood is way over-rated!
Now the good stuff:
-No state income tax in TN.
-Government is MUCH less intrusive on your personal freedom here.
-Health care is excellent
-Lots of lovely lakes throughout the area, good boating and fishing.
-One party rule - Republican (good or bad depends on your views I guess, lol)
-Traffic is non-existant for the most part, compared to NY
-Real estate market a lot less volatile than other large cities.
-Malls everywhere if you like to shop.
-Things like car insurance, registration fees, licenses and such are half-price from NY.
-Very cost-effective place to live.
In conclusion, the good-ole boy mentality is alive and well here. I have found not all, but many Knoxvillians to be suspicious of 'Yankees'. They are polite to you, but you can sense the lack of trust/deep-seated fear they feel towards you. This needs to be balanced against the many nice people who are living in the present and no longer rehashing the Civil War.

| Stagnation - 4/5/2010
If you're looking for a place to raise a middle-income, conservative, college-football loving family, then Knoxville is your place! I have lived in this city for ten years and, unfortunately, must report that not a lot has changed during that time. For years the city has been run by the same few political families and from the looks of things, this trend is not about to be broken anytime soon. Politically, the area is very conservative; democrats do not stand a chance here.
Church plays a major role in the lives of most Knoxville residents. Whether you're only a Christian on Sundays or live by "the good book," you can expect many aspects of life to be dominated by the church. There are some high-points to having the majority of the population beating bibles, though. If you don't like the church you're attending, you can just walk across the street to the one there. Also, if you're of the "Wal-Mart Generation," there are numerous megachurches in the area where you can get your religion and your milk, too!
On the positive side, Knoxville is a beautiful area. Due to Mayor Haslam's bid to fill Governor Bredesen's shoes in Nashville, there has been a great deal of renovation in the downtown area. As election day draws nearer, you can expect to see more renovations! The city sits in at the foothills of the Smokey Mountains and is only an hour's drive to the National Park. The city is also convenienty located in the middle of several major cities. Nashville, Louisville, Charlotte, and Atlanta are within a few hours of Knoxville.
Culture here is... well, is developing. The music scene is very mature, and I don't mean "old-timey." Due to the University of Tennessee's music school and Maryville College's World Class faculty, the music scene in Knoxville is the only thing with a pulse.
Whether you're looking to slow down, or come to a complete stop... Knoxville will accomodate both. The city is like a step back in time with many folks still using derogatory names to describe the president and getting all their news from Rush Limbaugh. A good adjective for this city is "stagnant."
