Little Rock, AR - Rich on recreation, poor on cult - 5/7/2007

Little Rock is a great place for people interested in the outdoors. Great, uncrowded hiking, fishing, and hunting very close by. Culturally it leaves something to be desired. The music scene is fairly low level.

northwest arkansas area has more going for it, tha - 4/19/2007

there is more jobs, more upscale stores, dining, etc in the fayetteville-bentonville area. and it is the 6th fastest growing metro area in the nation. so i would for sure check out northwest arkansas first before the little rock area. plus the crime rate in n.w.a is 10 times lower and one of the safest metro areas to live in. so check it out. rogers is a great city with lots of develpment.

would like relocation information anytown Arkansas - 4/10/2007

I am thinking about moving from the Daytona Beach Florida area, as the party lifestyle is just getting to be too much here. It has been increasing and my sleep has been DECREASING. I am looking for a low crime, QUIET safe friendly place to live that is moderately priced. I have looked at the crime stats and it says it is HIGH CRIME, but saw a few posts where it said that the population is 2000 and low crime??? what did I miss. if anyone can help me find more information and tell me why you like Ark. or maybe another town (I am open to suggestions) Thanks!!

Little Rock- A Microcosm of Everywhere Else! - 3/28/2007

Little Rock has something for everyone! If you are a conservative, liberal, artist, eccentric, radical religious right-er or farmer...you will find your kind in Little Rock. With less than 2,000 people, it is a diverse 2,000! Little Rock central (Heights/Hillcrest/Foxcroft/Robinwood) is so small that it's like a high school. You know everyone, they know you, and everyone is jockeying for alpha status. However, as you head west into Chenal, you have a certain anonymity. A good portion of these people are transplanted from elsewhere, and they don't care who you are, where you live, or who you know. Little Rock is big enough we enjoy the things people in big cities are doing- and thanks to the internet we are only about 10 months behind everyone else. Yet, Little Rock is small enough you don't contend with horrible traffic, endless lines, pollution or too much stimulation. Little Rock can become a little repetitive. You find your core group of friends, go to your favorite restaurants, favorite stores and that is that. But how many people in more exciting cities venture beyond their established footpath anyways? My loop includes going to the Little Rock Racquet Club for pilates and swimming, eating dinner at Cheeburger, Cheeburger or 1620. I go to Target, and Walmart out Highway 10. I shop at Kroger, go to Salon Nouveau (go see Joey!), and back home. About once a month I drive to Little Rock Airport, consult Southwest Airlines 'Ding' service, and jet to a new and unusual city for around $200 round trip. Miami, Charleston, Austin, Houston, St. Louis....are fun, fun, fun- but when I'm done I yearn for the simplicity and ease of living I have in Little Rock. Being from Colorado, living in Texas, and moving to Arkansas has provided me with a diversity of experiences. I had an opportunity to move to Austin last year. After a seven day visit I was jonesin' to get back home to my Little Rock. Traffic was horrendous, and although it is an amazing place to call home- Little Rock is like Austin was 25 years ago! Anyways, Little Rock has natural and undeveloped beauty; a strong economy, is relatively inaccessible (getting here from anywhere is challenging), and has everything to make it one of the hippest southern towns out there. Our schools are another issue, but if you can afford to pay for the myriad of private schools here- you will have the best of all worlds.

Yes, Little Rock has suburbs. - 12/28/2006

The city of Little Rock has about 185,000, while the metro exceeds 750,000. You can live in North Little Rock, West Little Rock, Sherwood, Maumelle, Jacksonville, Conway, Benton, Bryant, for a short commute to Little Rock, or some live in Hot Springs, a tourist village about 45 minutes away for a longer commute. There is a lot to do in Little Rock, in terms of shopping and entertainment anyway. The landscape surrounding the city is interesting, too. Though some may say it has a violent history of segregation and racial issues, Little Rock is just like any other medium-sized American city and has its many parts.

Little Rock, Arkansas - 12/26/2006

Little Rock has some nice areas - Hillcrest, the Heights, and West Little Rock. Much of the central part of town is low-income and high crime. People are friendly, but in a way that troubles me. They seem mainly friendly to each other, and not to newcomers. I've been here over six months and feel I have not made any friends at all. There also seems to be a certain racial tension (perhaps not surprising given the historic events surrounding desegregation) which I notice every time I encounter an African-American person, especially the cashiers at the local, mostly white, supermarket. It'something I never felt in Chicago (where I'm from) or in California (where I lived for many years).

Where to live? - 12/18/2006

We may be moving to the area in the next 6 months. I was hoping to rent a house. Where should I be looking? I have two small children and 3 small dogs. Does Little Rock have suburbs? Or does everyone actually live in Little Rock?

for those interested in moving to the LR area..... - 10/24/2006

Little Rock is not known for its factories or other blue-collar employments. There is much commerical and touristic growth in the area. It is similar to Tulsa, Oklahoma on a slightly smaller scale. It has some fun recreation areas such as Pinnacle Mountain State Park, the Arkansas River, the Farmer's Market in downtown, and locally is Wild River Country, a medium-sized water park, and Magic Springs, an amusement park in the suburb of Hot Springs. There is a large local population of retirees in the Hot Springs area, which is the largest retirement community in the nation. So come to LR if you would like to experience a large city experience on a medium-sized city scale.

Great Place To Live - 10/14/2006

The Little Rock/North Little Rock metro area is a great area for families and is known for local arts and attractions. Little Rock is classy. Education, although not rated high as a state, is great in LR. The population of the main part of greater part of the city is about 180,000, although the metro is almost 600,000.

Great Area - 10/13/2006

Little Rock and vicinity is a great place for families and overall every type of people to live and work. The city has a population of about 200,000, with a metro pop. of almost 600,000. Culture and the arts are greatly influenced by the different ethnic groups that have invested ideas and information in this area. The West Little Rock area is booming with residential and commercial growth. The climate of Little Rock is great in the fall and spring, when the weather is mild and drier. Summer is relatively humid and temps often soar into the upper 90s and low 100s. Winter is wonderful with mild temps and an occasion light dusting of snow. Although Arkansas has been ranked low in educational quality and opportunity, the city of Little Rock has great schools that provide plenty of AP classes, especially the Pulaski County Special School District. Many industries such as cellular phone companies + organizations are based in the LR vicinity. Overall, I have greatly enjoyed my experience in this part of central Arkansas.

Working in LR - 9/13/2006

I drive every day to work in LR from Conway and I occassionally go shopping here. Traffic is terrible on the weekdays and bumper to bumper during rush hours. Since I have looked into what it would be like to live in CA I would think the person questioning a move from CA to AR would find the cost of living much, much cheaper. My house in Conway is 1700 sq. ft, all brick, about 8 years old and was purchased at less that $120,000. This house would probably sell now at just under $150,000. For that price range in CA I would live in a cardboard box I think.

Boring - 9/3/2006

Suffice it to say, it's not a great place to live. People are not friendly and can be quite pretentious. And though it may not appear to be particularly segregated, there is still a lot of "us" and "them" mentality. I cannot wait to depart.

Trying to get info about cost of living in Little - 8/25/2006

I am considering a move to the Little Rock area since I have family there. I currently live in LA, and it's just too expensive, crowded, and overall not the best place to live. Can anyone give me more info about the quality of live/cost of living in the Little Rock area? I have researched alot about the job market there, and there seems to be plenty in my field. Of course, the pay is much less than here in CA but that's to be expected. I would like to own a home there, and I was wondering if it's realistic to own a home based on the salaries there. If anyone can provide any info, that would be great. Thanks!

Interesting Community - 3/1/2006

It's a good place for folks with families. If you're between 30-40 yrs old, single, professional, a minority and not a native of Arkansas, you may want to set your sights on another city because it is somewhat difficult getting connected in this community. But overall, it is a relatively friendly place with a variety of activities to keep you occupied. Great if you like the outdoors!

cost of living is skewed here - 2/27/2006

This is a cheap place to live, but the prices of luxury homes and the incomes of the uber wealthy mess up the averages. The gap between rich and poor here is like that of a third world country. Oh, and they tax food (along with every other thing) here.
