What a sad excuse for a city... - 8/11/2009

Lowly education... Over-competitive people who MUST be first, always... Self-absorbed and extremely unaware of right and wrong... Unable to comprehend the 3 commons: sense, courtesy, and decency... Louisville is a place that starts out with a smiling face and the shake of your hand; on the surface it looks to be the dream locale to bring up your children. Live here awhile and you begin to feel the under-currents of something amiss; something just a tad 'off'. After having been here for 11 years - I cannot wait for the day I put this ass-backwards thinking, low-level of intelligence, narcissistic, and extremely callus and abrasive place in my rear-view mirror. The saddest part of it all - the people here that are so passive-aggressive, so 'smile to your face but I'll stab you in the back', and so 'I'm more important than you so get out of my way' - really do seem really, really nice at first; the type of people you'd like to be around. Many who move here - move away... "I'm sorry - I'm just not from here, so I don't think like that and I wasn't brought up that way. I'm more like the rest of the country, and now - I'm outta here."

Music - 7/21/2009

As far as the local music scene goes, Louisville is among the best. From the local venues to the actual bands, this is a great city to try new things.

A big small town - 7/7/2009

Louisville often aspires to be an Indianapolis or even a mini-Cincinnati but it is simply a big small town. It is an easy town to navigate but it is a very conservative town with a bit of arrogance thrown in for good measure. I have lived here on and off all of my life I know of what I speak. If you are a single women men do not approach you - unlike the way they do in other cities - and whether you are male or female it is difficult to establish friendships that are more than fleeting at best. The town - finally - got its first Starbucks in 2002, has yet to get an Ikea, its a bit behind in most things and it takes a few years to catch up with either coasts. To outsiders Louisville is "so friendly". Looks are deceiving at times. People will talk to you but it is not the sincere Southern hospitality that one finds in the real South (we are not the real South.Cost of living is a plus, its affordable and as stated above, getting around is easy. Very likely you will see the same car (or two) in the afternoon that you saw in the morning. A big small town.

Quality of life in Louisville - 5/12/2009

I have visited Louisville several times and am impressed with the city. It seems like a good place to live. I would like to know if it is easy to make friends there for people in their 30's or 40's. Do people in Louisville prefer people who grew up in Louisville or are they open to new friendships with people who grew up in other parts of the country.

pretty good place for a southern city - 2/18/2009

I grew up in Louisville and I remember it as a pretty decent place. The "South" is really not my cup of tea, but compared to other "southern cities", Lou certainly rates near the top of what I have seen. L is one of the ten most literate cities in the country according to Sperlings. The quality of existing construction is pretty good. Houses are reasonably priced and not poised for as much further decline as in some areas. Actors Theatre offers some good culture. There is a lot of interesting history there, such as regarding Al Capone. There are some negatives of course - climate, tornados, crime, good old boys, traffic safety, proximity to ocean, big mountains, desert, etc but most of those you would find in most cities in the inland south. I have lived in the Pacific Northwest for the past several years and like it here very much. I have lived at least a decade in the Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones. When I was living on CST, I often thought about how much I liked it in Lou. One thing to think about is what type of people have tended to migrate TO Louisville. A lot of wack jobs migrated to southern Calif. and look at that place. Home values down 50% so far. They basically caused the catastrophic economic depression we are heading into with their no doc real estate loans (altho the "no new regulations" republican party certainly contributed as well). I dont think I want to live there. E and SE Lou have always been a little more sensible than many other parts of the country. You have to take the good along with the bad. If the negatives I mentioned earlier are not highly weighted on your list of preferences, the Lou is worth considering. If I had any relatives in or near Lou, I probably would have moved back at some point.

I give it a strong B - 2/7/2009

Louisville is as about as good of a city for it's size as you can get. Housing isn't cheep to me, but it is cheep compared to most of the country. As a realtor posted, people do take pride and keep up their properties here and the city does a fairly good job as well. There may be some not so pretty areas of town, but the east end is great. Lots to do if you are a sports fan and like the arts. There is a new multi-million dollar Bio-Research park on the east end currently being built. We have factories that have been in some trouble due to the economy like Ford. We are the home of UPS air operations, Yum Brands, and Kroger has a big distribution facility here. Lots of businesses in several industrial parks around town. Unemployment is low compared to many parts of the country. Schools are good, although many like moving out to Oldham county for the schools. Louisville is a fairly clean city where most folks take pride in the appearance of their homes and come spring loads and loads of flowers and landscaping get underway being planted. We have moved from here on three different occasions due to circumstances on our part but have also moved back here three different times. Louisville must have something we like or we wouldn't keep moving back. Overall I give it a strong B.

Do not move to Louisville!!! - 9/22/2008

If you are thinking about relocating. Do not move to Louisville. I did two years of research before moving here. Also spoke to several people before moving. When i got here, the people were not polite, rude, and not helpful. The state's economy is very poor. The city officials are inadequate and the schools are underperforming. I am moving after my lease is up. It is not culturely diverse, their ignorance, stupidity, judging people without knowing thing. I could go on. This place is always going to be behind the times. Kentucky is the laughing stock of America. I am telling everyone i know not to move here. They will tell others and it will get around that this state is in bad shape. No jobs, no shopping, racism, uneducated, low income residences not made to become self-sufficent. Crime is growing, police are non-responsive, the mayor is going along with the status quo. People go to church just to continue hating. Some cultures hate their own. Corruption... Need i say more.

Bored in Louisville - 7/20/2008

I have lived and worked in Louisville for the past 15 years after spending several years in Nashville, New York, and Maryland which are all better places than Louisville. During this time, my kids have been victims of the poor school system here and I have not had any type of job growth or wage increase in five years even with a PhD. Sexism is alive an well as the good ole boy network rules this region. Once you reach a certain point here in a job, even with a PhD, there is a plateau and I continue to ask myself why my husband and I continue to stay. Well, we tried to sell our house; however, the prices in our east end neighborhood continue to decrease over what we paid for it several years ago and there have been no buyers. My husband's company has constructed several condos and lofts downtown; however, many are still empty. There is little to no progression here. It is boring and the only thing to look forward to is Thunder, Derby, and the day we move away from here. My kids all went away to college out of state and are way behind other students in college maybe because the school system here is going down the tubes and my kids have no intentions on ever coming back. Many of the kids whom graduated with them in high school have become stuck in this black hole. If you can leave this place, do it. As for the culture, or the lack of culture, it is Kentucky, so you can't really expect much.

Louisville - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - 6/24/2008

The good - nothing beats the Kentucky Derby and the weeks leading to it. This it the only time this town becomes alive and fun. There are quite a few great and unique restaurants in the Ville that offer excellent choices. Churchill Downs and other attractions make this place what it is. Louisville is a good college sports town loaded with Cards, UK, and IU fans galore. The bad - There is a large ignorant, racist, and uneducated population here. Living here for 6 years, I have found out that many are close minded and unwilling to change. Another bad, finding any type of career advancement positions is near impossible. Employers are not willing to pay college grads fairly. If you are looking to score a big salary, Louisville is not the place for you. Chair restaurants continue to move in and push the mom and pops out. It gets really dull and boring. Louisville tries to be a big city but is stuck in small town thought. The Ugly - The TARC has to be one of the worst public transit buses that I have been on, you will need a car if you move to or visit this city. The cost of living is higher than what I expected. Groceries and goods are the same here as they are in Chicago and Indianapolis and gas is even higher in some areas. Gangs and crime continue to grow. There is not much to do outside of derby. The school system is not too good. And RACIST people once again makes my ugly list. I just accepted a new job in another City. Louisville has provided me with good memories, but it is time to move on. Many Louisvillians seem to grow up and stay here and rarely travel to explore other areas of the country so their view of the rest of the world and content with Louisville can be expected. I would not say this is the place if you are looking for cultural and other activities and diversity. Besides drinking and bars, that is it. I am married and have a 4 year old and this is an average place for raising a family and does have many parks, but not much else.

Not just for Simple Minds - 5/11/2008

I must strongly disagree with the previous posting that Louisville is for simple minds. I grew up in Louisville and left in the mid 1990's because I did feel this way. After having lived and worked in several cities throughout the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia for the last 12 years, returning to Louisville has been a more than pleasant surprise. It is one of the most progressive small cities I've ever visited or lived in. Yes, the sports bar scene is disproportionately large, but there is also ample room for progressive living. Please give Louisville a chance if you're on the fence!

Great for simple minds - 4/23/2008

If you're a simple minded person that likes a big city feel, Louisville is perfect for you. There is no room for progressive thought. Most people my age (21-35) like the bar scene. There are few cultured areas. For the most part, "culture" to Louisvillians means looking at a few paintings of guns and/or horses, or guns pointed at horses, or horses holding guns. I like to call most Louisvillians "sophisticated rednecks." They live in nice houses, make a decent living, but don't have much going on upstairs, and whatever is going on up there is not subject for review. Very archaic mentality here. Ashamed to say I was born here. Hey, the weather is nice, though.

Louisville Rocks! - 3/17/2008

Such a great place, I moved from Cincinnati. There is so much culture. I have no idea why it says the population is about 250,000. There are well over 1 million people living in Louisville. And as for the person who freaked out about Louisville being conservative-Hello, Shepherdsville is NOT Louisville. Obviously, you never visited the highlands. Louisville is awesome, and the person who said most of the country was conservative was right..why are the people who always preach tolerance, not tolerant?

Raise your family here! - 12/25/2007

I am a physician with a pursuit of a Master's. I have lived in NYC, Boston, Philadelphia and the Seattle area. Louisville is the most gracious, friendly, open town I have lived in. I am conservative and it has been a breath of fresh air to live with people who accept differences in people, yet stand firm in their own beliefs. I have experienced the rath of liberalism and their inability to allow differing opinions from their own to coexist. Louisville allows this, while embracing a local heritage, kindness and faith like no other. You can have the large metropolis, the crime, the traffic, the rudeness, the lack of tolerance in the places I have lived! Louisville is a breath of fresh air in a world of compromise!
