If you have a family, move here! - 12/24/2007

I've lived in Boston, NYC, Philadelphia and Seattle. I am a medical professional with Master's and would live no where else! The people are the most gracious and friendly I have ever met. I am a conservative and found it acceptable for residents of the other cities I mentioned to "bash at will" when it came to my values and what was important to me and my family. I find it interesting that some people who don't find complete and immediate acceptance for their liberal life choices can't accept the life choices of conservatives who disagree with them. So much for a free country! I suggest you do leave and move to the love-filled major metropolis environment. Keep the crime, the rudeness, the intolerance, the danger, the traffic, the lack of faith. I'll take Louisville any day!

Not too conservative - 12/13/2007

Louisville is not too conservative. The comment from the Denver native is from Shepherdsville, KY (which is less progressive). There are plenty of good liberals here in Louisville. Just visit the Highlands neighborhood. Louisville is affordable, has low crime, low traffic volume, and is constantly growing. It is a large city with a small town atmosphere.

HELP!!! No place for a non-cookie cutter person. - 8/25/2007

I tell you what...if you are not from here or some where close; if you are not a standard Christian; if you don't love George Bush; if you don't hate homosexuals; if you don't mistrust non-whites; if you don't think that a good time is drinking, vomiting, eating lots of pork hot dogs, getting in a fight and then driving home drunk is a good time; if you don't think that educated people (by educated people I mean people with a high-school diploma)are snobs; and you don't think that ANY disability means a person is a 'retard'; then perhaps you are not going to do well here in Louisville. Chances are if you are reading this you are one of those High-school-ed-ja-ma-kated folks, and we don't like your type around here.

Looks good to me! - 8/13/2007

To that comment from Denver liberal, believe it or not, majority of the US is conservative. It is just those "big city" liberals who think everybody must be like them. Get out of your liberal bubble and face the real world, the conservative world. Thanks for your comment, I just might move down there!!

Not a bad city... - 7/10/2007

I've lived here for over 30 years. Some have called it segregated and conservative yet I've seen more interracial couples here than I have in the majority of cities outside of the bigger ones like NY, LA, etc. The great thing about Louisville is its a laid back city that's very affordable. A very nice two bedroom apartment shouldn't run you anymore than $700-800 a month. A decent house can be had for $180,000. The downside is the job market here isn't as promising as in some other places. The weather is sporadic - between May and Aug you can experience a few moments of pleasant weather, followed by violent storms, humidity, more storms, more heat and humidity, more pleasant weather, repeat. If anything its a great small big city. A glorified sports town ruled by College basketball fanatics, friendly and easy going but leaving a lot to be desired. Great to retire or raise a family but singles may find themselves wishing for more. The nightlife has it's ups and downs. Club goers should look elsewhere but bar hoppers should have plenty to choose from, everything from redneck bars to trendy frat brat spots.

Louisville - 7/5/2007

While I have traveled extensively and lived between homes in this city and Florida, I have always maintained a primary residence in Louisville. Louisville has the best and worst of what a city offers. The advantages are: - a small town atmosphere; - relatively low cost of living; - friendly people; - easy to get just about anywhere; - moderate climate; - situated on the Ohio River; - beautiful terrain with rolling hills, parks, trees and bluegrass; - Churchill Downs and The Kentucky Derby; - University of Louisville Cardinals Football, Basketball, Baseball, etc.; - great restaurants; - active arts, city events and festivals. The disadvantages are: - small town politics and cliques; - distinct gap between advantaged and disadvantaged; - inexcusable public school system; - coal powered and polluting electric company; - carcenogenic chemical manufacturing plants; - polluted air; - bankrupt sewer district run by mayor; - poor land-use planning of farm land and undeveloped properties; - no broad scale initiatives or coordination of government agencies, developers/builders and the private sectors toward conservation, green sourcing, open space and clean up of our city's air, earth/ground or water; - job and economic environment remains stable, but flat, not dynamic or growing; - no authoritative, effective citizen oversight of local government operations.

Kentucky's worst kept secret!!! - 6/13/2007

A great city to visit but a horrible one to live in. Not a very educated population. The public school system is very poor and most send their children to private school who can afford it. Most buildings look run down and very racially divided.

Love the Ville - 5/19/2007

The last poster surprised me as I'm also from Denver...yet I love Louisville and find it very comparable to Denver. Denver and Louisville are predominantly conservative and religious though not overwhelmingly. Pople are friendly. The pace of life is relaxed and traditional. I love Lousiville. The one downside is the job situation. Lexington may surpase Louisville in importance simply do to jobs and the economy. Yet, plenty of people in the Ville make a good living and support their families just fine. If you've got a college degree and a little work experience it is just fine to live, IMHO.

Don't move here - 5/16/2007

Hands down this is the most segregated place to live, mentally and physically. I moved here from Denver(why?)to get a change of pace. The pace slowed to a halt. Everything here is traditional and overly conservative. Not a bad idea when it comes to crime etc., but there are very few citizens here willing to expand their minds to let this place grow to its possible potential. Downward spiral....Good luck Booiville!!

Louisville Has Potential, but Not Worth the Move - 5/13/2007

I moved to Louisville five years ago. Of the places I have lived in Kentucky, Louisville is by far the nicest. Not as racially inbalanced as Lexington, not as snotty as the rural communities; this town has a lot going for it. The Highlands is a wonderful place to spend a nice evening; there are theatres and playhouses; there's baseball, plenty of college sports. But the job market is disgusting. The majority of jobs available could not sustain a family. The downtown area needs major work to become any type of entertainment factor. Taxes in Louisville (and Kentucky in general)are deplorable. There's no such thing as a middle class: there are the very rich and the very poor. Those who work hardest to make ends meet are taxed the hardest. Though the majority of people I've met here are very nice and helpful, it's just not enough to make up for poor business/job prospects, little neighborhood pride, and little effort put into growth. The mayor is a wonderful person, who I would love to see run for Govenor, but he's got very little to work with. Visit Louisville, but live somewhere else.

Louisville, Great to Visit, Not to Live - 5/2/2007

Living in this city for the past eight years, I can see that it has a lot of potential; however, the old guard is slow to change and the constant overcast skies can really make everyday seem gloomy. Pros: Louisville is a nice mid-size city featuring such events as Thunder Over Louisville and the Kentucky Derby Festival. There are many nice parks, there are many young couples with kids, it is both kid and family friendly, and in general, the people are friendly. The downtown area of the city is coming along with several high-rise office buildings and condominiums being proposed. Housing within the city and suburbs is affordable and the cost of living is relatively low as compared to other cities. Cons: Public transportation is non-existent. The TARC may be the worst public transit system in the country. Crime within the city is on the upswing and continues to be a problem. There are more signs of gang activity, drugs, and other violent acts of crime. The public school system is going downhill. My husband and I had to enroll our child into a private school due to issues we along with several other parents had with the public school system. The drivers around Louisville-Metro are horrible. Indiana drivers are the worst, but some Kentucky are bad too. Salaries and job growth are meager. Selling your home can be a headache and the appreciation values are minimum. My last con is that there continues to be a clash between racists, transplants, inbreds, poor trash, old money, and those that would like to bring more progressive change to Louisville. Though I really like this place, it is still stuck in the 1950s and I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel so we are moving. Louisville is a good place to visit, but do your research and think twice before moving here.

Common sense - 4/13/2007

As far as Culture, Louisville has it! Louisville has one of the oldest Victorian Neighborhoods in the United States, unfortunately ran by crackheads. Louisville`s downtown area is growing rapidly to accomodate the growing population, unfortunately, the cost of living is not balanced out with the wages this city offers. It seems like this city wants to grow, wants to expand its horizons, but puts itself in a catch-22 with the stubborn republican community (and we see where the republicans have landed us to date!). Louisville has so much room to stretch its legs, but it is almost like the city is too afraid to get up out of the recliner, stop being so comfortable, and start exercising health! Onto the real topic. Louisville drivers are insane. I have driven through Atlanta and Chicago, and drove through the New York, New York Metro, and their drivers arent as insane as the drivers here! People in this city are like lemmings! Too busy on their cell phones, in too much of a hurry to stop at a red light! I mean, come one! Enough is enough! The Louisville Metro Police department will not even do anything about it! I live on a one way street, and people drive down my street the wrong way ALL THE TIME, and mind you I have 4 cops living on that same street, who act like it is no big deal! The public transportation system is awful! The TARC(transit authority of the river city) has to be the worst transit system of any city! They are very inconsistent, never on time, sometimes early, which is a big no-no!! But the higher-ups dont care! They are too comfortable with the juvenile approach! And the streets! Heaven forbid you own a nice car! If it doesnt get dinged up from a stupid driver hitting you, then you are sure to lose your suspension from the poorly maintained roadways! Everyone talks about Jerry Abramson being such a great Mayor!! Yeah right! Come to Louisville to visit, but be wise about where you go, and dont forget to stop by the highlands too!! Plenty of yuppy snobs there, and pointless shops, which are slowly closing. Louisville Schmooisville.

Something for everyone - 2/27/2007

I have lived in Louisville all my life, except for 2 yrs in Mississippi (I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy)and 4 yrs in Lexington for College. It is a marvelous place to live. I am a Realtor and take great pleasure in showing people who are moving here (or are thinking of moving here) around this city. It never ceases to amaze me at how often people are suprised by what we have to offer. I think that sometimes residents of a city get stuck in a rut and they don't realize that this city is growing up all around them... and in fantastic ways! We have a strong Arts Community that supports each other and reaches out to schools and the rest of the community. Our Medical community is strong and growing in leaps and bounds. We have urban living, we have suburban living, we have country living, we have palatial estates... The public school system (although large) responds well to meet the needs of its children and parents. There is also a strong Independant school system if that is what you prefer. Although the median housing price is low the quality of houses are for the most part high. Louisvillians are very proud of their city and they take pride in presenting it well all year round (although we do have a spotlight on us the first weekend in May--Derby.) We take pride in our architectural heritage and the metro government's planning commision has an eye toward the future and a finger on the pulse of the past. We are moving up in this world and the nations 16th (or is it 15th now) largest city welcomes it's new residents and visitors with open arms! If you are interested in seeing properties in the Louisville area please contact me through my website www.glarhomes.com/annjames. Have a marvelous day!

I moved here from WV about 4 years ago. i then moved to memphis TN for two years and hated every moment. i couldn't wait to get back to the ville. i finally moved back about 2 weeks ago. And LOVE IT. i live in J'town (jeffersontown. louisville is a family oriented place, for young and old. you can always find something to do and enjoy. if you want to move and don't know where to move to, give louisville a chance. if you like to gamble there is a gambeling boat just outside of the city, horse racing (KY derby), arts, movies, shopping, and a great sports programs. thanks and hope to see you on the streets someday. chris

Not everyone is Nice! - 1/7/2007

When you think of southern charm Louisville is neither southern nor has charm. I have lived here for 23 years and am desperately trying to get out. There aren’t any local men who share the same values as I do, and the ones who are here are on this high horse thinking that they only deserve Tyra Banks look a like. Guys here are jerks, girls here are mean (and for no reason), oh how I can’t wait to see Louisville in my rearview mirror!
