I think this town has finally worn me out - 10/18/2009

Ive lived in memphis for 34 years and watched it go from a good city to , a reverse racist, crime ridden dump. The education system in this city is awful, and now that we are having our second child, and private school is becoming too expensive, I think we are considering moving on. Its one thing to live in a city where your own mayor calls the white people "haters" and suppressive racists. Its one thing to live in a city where the crime is top in the country. Its one thing when the preachers in some of the churches, call people like me "white devils". BUT its another thing when i think about how my children are supposed to deal with it. For now , Im here. Self employed , and trying to get by. Currently , anyone looking to move here, I would highly reccomend, STAY AWAY!!!!! In the words of the great Mike Tyson, "I love this town, everyones just like me".

We hate this place! - 7/6/2009

We have lived here for over 5 years now and can't wait to get the heck out of here! I've lived from coast to coast-Burke, VA to Monterey, CA and many places in between and I can first hand tell you this is the worst place I have ever experienced!! EVER! I would never recommend moving here! In fact, when you talk to other people living here about the city, 9 out of 10 will tell you that they too hate this town. From the politics to the crime to the weather to the HATEFUL people, this place is the worst! We now have a 20 month old son and we are trying desperately to do whatever we can to move! Husband and I have great jobs, but that's how they suck people into this city. We make more in our jobs here than we would up in many places up north and east, which is crazy! But many places of employment have to offer more money b/c not many people want to move here and rightfully so! Please think twice before relocating to Memphis! You'll thank me for it later!

It sucks, but its home! - 6/16/2009

So I've read some postings about Memphis on here. I'd like everyone to know that yes, we are a rough crowd. Yes, quite a few of us are under educated. And yes, a lot of us are crack heads. But hey, but who isnt these days! Some of you may have visited for a week, some of you may have been here for a while. I've been living here for 17 years so if you wanna see the good side of Memphis, hit me up! Please be prepared for the most adventerous night you've ever experienced! PS please note though, while it can be one of the most amazing cities, everyone who was born/raised/lived here over 75% of there life are begging for a chance to get out including myself!!!:)

Memphis - 6/6/2009

Memphis has its own charm. Crime can be a problem in some areas as in many cities but downtown is generally safe, particularly areas frequented by tourists. Spring here is wonderful, fall is pretty much non-existant, winters are short and mild for the most part and summer can be unbearably hot and humid. Music is a huge part of the culture here and so is food-the city smells like smoke and barbeque a good bit of the time. The greatest asset Memphis has is the Mississippi River, though it is unappreciated by some.

crime in Memphis - 4/4/2009

I've read on some reviews about Memphis on how dangerous it is to stop at red lights in certain parts of Memphis. My husband and I are from Idaho and are going to be there this July for a day and a half. We are wanting to go to mudd Island, overton square, Graceland and the zoo. We are staying at the Heartbreak Hotel in Whitehaven. We were in Memphis for the first time last December and didnt feel very safe down town or in Whitehaven except for the Heartbreak Hotel and Graceland........We were told that Whitehaven is a dangerous part of Memphis.....would this be where it is unsafe to stop at red lights??? So after reading information on the crime situations down there .......I'm a little scared to bring my two daughters there and tour the city more than just Graceland. Thanks, Tana

Don't Even Think About Living in Memphis 03-25 - 3/25/2009

I am a born and raised Memphis. I have lived here for over 40 years, and the only reason I haven't left is I can't afford to. Between property tax increases, and real estate depriciation, I can't leave. This used to be a wonderful place to live until about 1980. The population used to be working individuals who payed their bills. Now the population is mostly composed of illegal aliens, and criminal elements. The crime is out of control. Memphis was listed by FBI stastics as the most violent city in the US. There is a shooting virtually every day, and a murder at least every other day. Street Gangs control the public schools, and a lot of the neighborhoods. Property taxes are raised sometimes twice a year, and the CITY GOVERNMENT throws away the money on raises for their own salaries, with many making in excess of $125,000 a year as a public servant. The mayor redecorated his office at a cost of $1 Million dollars of taxpayer's money (to redocorate????). Live anywhere but here. Save yourself the pain and anguish..............

My Home Town - 2/7/2009

When you live somewhere your whole life, you tend to see only the bad in it. So the bad, the government is corrupt, police are corrupt, we have plenty of them go to jail, the school system sucks so bad that I can't wait for my son to graduate this year an when he does he doesn't read or write worth a lick, as well as, alot of his friends, the mentality of people here is don't care about anything, is why I think there is so much crime, I blame that on our leadership, and yes we are gang ridden, Memphians exist they don't live, unless you are rich and can afford Germantown are Collierville, in Shelby county not Memphis city, one county two governments, which I think they schould consolidate. Does all this happen in every city, probably, just not as bad. Ready for the good, we have southern hospitality, go down to the river at sunset on a nice day you see all walks of life in one place together being friendly enjoying a God given beauty, can't help but enjoy Memphis in May, music fest, bar b q, Beale st., the parks-Shelby farms, the zoo, convience, but, to live here, alot of people always say they have been trying to leave here but, never do. There must be something that keeps them here. I will say are city is working on there issues, I remember when we won city beautiful, I am confident we can be there again, cause it is trashy now. All in all it is home. So, welcome, whoever chooses to call Memphis.

Paying bills - 1/30/2009

I recently finished school and began to make more money and for the first time ever I'm not living hand to mouth. I'm a single woman with no kids who just finished nursing school. Right now Memphis is very affordable for me. Why I want to leave Memphis has nothing to do with cost of living. Unfortunately in Memphis no amount of money will guarantee security in your own home. The utility bills are a bit high, but right now for me it's affordable. Now I'm looking for the whole package in a city, including safety.

When will the city fathers wake up? - 1/24/2009

It's sad when my colleagues tell me "don't park there" and it's only 2 blocks from the building. They say, "you'll get mugged or worse". It's no idle fear - there have been documented instances among us. We work downtown at the University. We're stuck here. The University is not about to move. It's so unsafe that I'm afraid to work after dark. I can't be safe walking to my car even a block from work. The buildings must remain locked at all times in order to prevent us from being attacked at our workplace. This is UNBELIEVABLE, UNCONSCIONABLE, and just TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. If the city of Memphis wanted, really wanted, to do something about this, they could, and would. Forget all the OTHER problems - racism, poor quality of education, really bad city services, terrible infrastructure. We just want to be safe in our beds and at our workplaces. When will the city fathers awake to the terrible ongoing situation and get real about it? This city has always had so much POTENTIAL, but at this rate it will NEVER BE REALIZED. It's pitiful the attempts of a few well-meaning people to put things right when the WILL to do it by the city gov'm't is just not THERE. I don't live in Memphis due to the crime, but must work here. That alone should tell you something. Dr. MLK Jr. is my ALL TIME hero. I believe in his dream. I felt a momentous sense of history on election day casting my vote with so many others who elected our first African American President. I felt Dr. King would have been so proud to see this day. But this city.......is doomed.......as long as we suffer from the constant twin scourges of crime and poverty - they go hand in hand. No hand outs! We want to work and are proud to. Let us do so in safety and security, give us the police protection we need and deserve! I've visited many 1st rate cities - Toronto, Minneapolis, New York, and some smaller ones with great quality of living like Burlington, Vermont. I can say unreservedly Memphis is the worst place I've ever lived with respect to crime, and that underpins ALL other aspects of quality of life. Sorry, Memphis but you have to do better than this.

Hot, hot, summers - 12/8/2008

Memphis has beautiful, long Springs with different flowering trees and shrubs everywhere appearing one after another. There are so many tree species that in the fall, first one type of tree changes color, then another. Spring and Fall are beautiful and mild. Winters are mild. Summers are hot, hot, hot! I've never been able to adjust to going outside in the summer, even at night. The heat is balanced by lovely flowers and flowering crepe myrtles everywhere. The climate is always changing day to day with a series of hot fronts from the south battling cold fronts from the south.

Relocating to Memphis - 12/3/2008

My husband, my baby and I are relocating to Memphis. Can anyone tell me about any safer neighborhoods in the city (like Midtown maybe??) or are the suburbs the only way to go? I don't really feel like a 'suburb' person but I am looking for a secure place to raise my little boy. Thanks for any input you have!

Summer is tough - 11/19/2008

Nice spring and fall - especially when the summer doesn't start too early or last too long. The winters aren't too bad, but I miss the snow some (not driving in it or shovelling it, I'm originally from NE) Summers can be barely bareable.

This is Memphis, watch your step.... - 10/31/2008

Memphis is a Metropolis with a large welfare population. We are crime ridden, have an almost hostile mayor with his own agenda, and lots of crooked politicians. We have a long history of tearing down our historical buildings and putting up fast food franchises. Most citizens prefer to stay inside after dark. We used to have a certain cachet as a funky blues river town, but things are becoming fairly homgenized and bland. We are basically an overgrown two bit town, with no clear vision as to where we are going. Oh yeah,as an added plus, we are located on the New Madrid earthquake fault!

1/3 Live Below the Poverty Line. - 10/9/2008

Need I say more. The crime and cost of living are directly related to poverty levels. I've been to Memphis and do not relish the time there. But, I would visit Graceland again.

Poor quality of Life in Memphis, TN - 10/6/2008

I have been living in Memphis, TN for about nine months now. I had visited a few times before having permanently translocated from Miami, FL to move in with my parents who have been living here for a few years. At a glance, it may not seem so awful but first impressions may be deceiving. Having grown up in a big city with stuff to do, Memphis is a ghost town. From the obnoxious cops to the early business closures, Memphis offers a lifetime filled with a lingering monotony.

What is wrong with this picture? - 9/27/2008

Imagine a place where politicians are convicted of bribery, fraud, and found guilty of sexual misconduct, then serve prison time, only to get re-elected! Now imagine a place where the superintendant of schools is forced to resign for sexual misconduct and then is elected city mayor. Now imagine a family (Ford)so corrupt and powerful that the points made above seem insignificant. Welcome to Memphis, TN.

Too Many Naysayers About Memphis - 8/30/2008

I've lived in Memphis most of my entire life (exception: Military service). I would say that one's opinion of Memphis will coincide with how you view the city in general. There are those that constantly complain/whine about the crime rate, taxes, and political/racial issues; the complainers usually don't do anything to solve/resolve the issues at hand other than run their mouths (in other words, complaining for complaining's sake). Then there are those, such as myself, who completely love this city. Yes, issues do exist; overall this is a GREAT CITY TO LIVE IN. In this day and age most of us who live in cities/urban environments will experience some of the same things to one degree or another. There are some things that happen no matter where you live (even in 'small town America'). Memphis is much better than a lot of places. There are many things to do and experience in this city and the outlining areas. We have parks, museums, festivals, concerts (some free), a multitude of community/civic/cultural events, theatres, well-known colleges, unique and eclectic community environments, sporting events, so on and so forth...You can always find something to do here. The ones who say that there is nothing to do here are hiding out in a box and need to come out of it. If you want thrive on the negativity that you may encounter or hear no matter where you go, then that is your option. There are many Memphians who would welcome you with open arms (I being one of them); some may complain, but they would still welcome you nontheless. Feel free to visit the Great City of Memphis, TN. Feel free to look for perfection if you wish - you might not find it, but go ahead and look for it anyway (we won't discourage you). The best thing to do is to look for the positive; after all none of us are perfect, are we?
