i loved memphis!!! - 4/28/2006

I visited memphis in September and fell in love with it. I don't understand when ppl say that the driving is bad and that ppl are rude. I found the nicest ppl and ppl are so laid back that it's a pleasure to drive. the weather was amazing, try living up here in the north where you have 10 feet of snow and it's in the minuses for months. Now that's depressing. I'd like to know where the best place to live in Memphis, i think when you live somewhere it all depends on where you live, 'cause every city has poverty and crime. My husband and i with our two children want to live in Memphis. Where are the best schools?

It's ok but no place to raise a family. - 4/20/2006

As a single person or married with no kids, Memphis isn't that bad. But when you have kids, it pretty much sucks. Really high crime rate, bad public schools, the list goes on. The only really good thing is the zoo.

Not the worst place... - 4/16/2006

I lived outside of Memphis (Bartlett) for 12 years (I now live in Nebraska) and graduated high school from there. Memphis is certainly not the most appealing place in many ways: high crime over a vast majority of the city, poor school systems, trashy looking in alot of places, horrible drivers, racially divided politics, etc... But the same can probably be said about other cities as well. Memphis does have some positive qualities: outstanding bbq, great music, good museums (including the Civil Rights Museum), a great zoo, relatively low cost of living, and a very tolerable winter climate. The parts of Memphis that are nice, are some of the beautiful places in the South. But if you have to move here, I recommend moving to the suburbs. Nice, friendly atmosphere with southern hospitality, affordable housing with safe neighborhoods, abundant dining places and movie theaters, and a decent (but not great) public school system. So moving to the Memphis area is not like moving your family to Hell. With that being said I certianly find Lincoln and Omaha NE to be far better places to live! Overall Memphis is a great place to visit and an good place to live (if you can learn to deal with a few things).

A Few Facts You'll Want To Know - 4/8/2006

Memphis is number one in infant mortality and child pedestrian deaths in the United States. Memphis is third highest in crime, nationally. Double check the property tax rate, it's high compared to surrounding areas. Use extreme caution when buying in Memphis...

Memphis is what you make of it! - 1/24/2006

Memphis is like any other city of one million plus people. As always, we need to improve in every aspect because nothing is perfect. Living here you have sports (PRO & Minor League), arts (off broadway theatre & art galleries), Music & Entertainment (concerts, blues, jazz, and everything else you can think of), Special Events (Memphis in May International BBQ Festival & Memphis in May Music Festival), outdoor activities (such as access to biking and hicking trails, water skiiing, hunting and fishing, sky diving, and the list goes on). From the people stand point, it all depends on the crowd you surround yourself with. If you are around the right people and make the right decisions, you should be happy with a place like Memphis! There are so many ways to get involved with this city and meet new people for example St. Jude, The Boys and Girls Clubs, MPact, and countless other organizations always can use volunteers. Any city is what you make of it! The cost of living is lower compared to other cities of its size. The job market is very active due to corporations such as FED EX, International Paper, Auto Zone, Technicolor, William Sonoma, Service Master and countless other major companies that either have their HQ or major presence here in this market. And like other cities of this size, we as a city are trying to figure out solutions to the problems that we do have in order to make this a better place to live. As my heading states, Memphis, like any major city, is what you make out of it!

Memphis is an AWFUL place to live. I agree with all the negitive things that has been said about Memphis here. Its all true! I have lived here for 8 long years. I cant wait to move away! I have NOTHING good to say about Memphis. It is a depressing place with close minded people and nothing to do and no job opps. It truly does feel like im wasting my life away here. I dont see why people would vacation here or wish to move here.

Becoming a Great City - 1/10/2006

I moved from KY in 1998 after school and Memphis was a hell hole! I lived in Bartlett and was just getting to know the city. I moved downtown 5 years ago and have seen a tremendous tranformation of the once very questionable downtown area. Downtown is a great place to live, rent a downtown apartment single or empty nest or live on MudIsland if you have children. The race card is played often but it is getting better with more opportunity and better education. Plenty of things to do! I challenge anyone show me a better sunset than that on the Mississippi. City shcools still suck but private is the way to go living in the city. Untapped area around Shelby Forest is great as well but schools suck. Always have Germantown and Colierville and Southhaven to look at if your pretty close minded. GO GRIZZ!

Great place - 1/1/2006

Memphis has great entertainment for everyone, growing economy in distribution and medicine, and short commute times. Very hot summers, cold winters (a couple of inches of snow 1-3 days a year), wet springs, and pretty fall. Small town charm with big city ammenities. Nice suburbs with a low cost of living.

Memphis, TN - 12/27/2005

The other commenters have an ax to grind, for some reason. Memphis has as many problems as any other large city, but it's hardly without advantages: the friendliest people I've ever known, better-than-average race relations (that "blond in the grocery store" has to be lying; that's entirely implausible), four distinct seasons, affordable homes, beautiful trees, a good variety of restaurants, a world-class chamber orchestra (in a suburb) headed by Michael Stern (Isaac's son), Good ballet company and orchestra, FedEx HQ, St. Jude (with a Nobel Prize-winner on staff), Hilton Hotels HQ, AutoZone HQ, IP HQ, a pro basketball team, first-rate minor league baseball, two great independent bookstores, indie coffee shops, good live music. Grumble if you will, but there's a lot here for those willing to shut up and get out of the house.

Not the greatest, but not the worst either - 12/23/2005

I have lived in Washington D.C, Providence R.I., Boston and Memphis. Yes, the summers here are unbearably hot. Yes the city schools are terrible. Yes, everyone has allergy problems. The politicians are corrupt and even comical, and racial tension is higher than anywhere I've ever lived, visited, or read about. But the housing is affordable and commute time is short. We pay no income tax. Utilities and the overall cost of living are low. Many families can afford to have one parent stay at home with the kids. Most people (black and white) are friendly and helpful and would do anything for you. We have a nice zoo, lovely museums, the best minor league baseball park in the country, and the Grizzlies. Memphis has its problems, but overall its a nice community. And you can't beat the barbeque.

The worst of the worst - 12/12/2005

I am 29 years old and I have lived here all of my life. I cannot wait to move. Memphis sucks so bad that it makes you want to go to another country almost. The weather is too hot and human and has caused my entire family to develop asthma. There are no jobs worthwhile if you are trying to establish a career. The only good thing I can say about Memphis is that the ladies are thick and beautiful at Pure Passion. I homeschool our five children because the only at the schools are drugs and sex. Everybody claims to be saved but curse you out first thing Monday Morning. Don't let it rain or snow--people down here can't drive. I cannot wait to have another area code.

Sure, it's a hellhole, but - 12/1/2005

People don't want to say it, but the main reason why many people hat the city so much is because it is majority black. I am black and yes, I want to move out, but it is hardly the worst city in the nation. And not all the public schools here are bad. Just because a vast majority of them are majority black does not equal bad school. I went to majority white high schools because they try to reach you more and treat you better than some all black schools. But, a lot of these people hate te city because of that and if that is your only reason than some of you a re truely pathetic human beings.

I was born here but determined not to die here - 11/3/2005

The ONLY reason we're here is family. The climate is awful, we all suffer from allergies, racial problems everywhere. The city's political structure is corrupt, the schools are terrible (thank God we homeschool), and the job market is pretty sad. We are trying to hold out for a couple more years so I can finish nursing school but I'm starting to reconsider escaping and finishing school somewhere else! Besides family ties there is no reason to live here (unless you work for FedEx). Ugh!

Yes, Memphis is as bad as everyone says - 10/19/2005

This is coming from a life long Memphian (25 yrs). This city just gets worse and worse as the years go by. There's no need to repeat all the negatives previously pointed out. But I can say they are ALL TRUE. The only thing keeping me here is family but regardless I plan on moving in about 2-3years. I have no children yet because I refuse to raise them in this deplorable city. Everyone that lives here hates it, everyone that moves here hates it, and I'm not sure why anyone would want to visit here. Just stay away and put your money to better use.

great place to waste your life away.. - 10/17/2005

do not come here if you can help it. Memphis seems to be the light at the end of the tunnel for every white trash person in the south and every gangsta wannabe. If you want a "career" there are only 3 companies to work for: Fedex, Autozone and International Paper. Not many choices there. Beale street downtown has to have a police officer every 25 feet all year long because of all the crime. The good news is the cops are there, the bad news is that they need to be there. Memphis is ghetto. Memphis is redneck white trash heaven. Its an odd mix. In the burbs of Memphis you have collierville and germantown which is where the (predominantly white) upper middle class and wealthy live. Again, heavy, heavy police presence in these areas. Both of these towns have zero soul to them, just your strip malls with Abercrombie etc and the ubiquitous soccer moms in the SUV's. The problem is that since education level is very low around here, you get these wealthy white trash uneducated people who have inherited money from being here generations and generations....but they are still uneducated. You see rednecks living in $300,000 and up homes in Germantown and Collierville...very weird. Anyway, as someone who has travelled quite a bit in America, Memphis is the place you do NOT want to end up..you will hate it here..

Memphis is undesirable - 10/15/2005

I agree with everyone who commented that they do not like Memphis. I am a native, but have lived elsewhere and traveled greatly. I only came back to take care of family and I plan to move away again as soon as possible. Memphis is truly the worst place I have ever been. I can't think of one positive thing to say about it, other than that there are about two weeks in the spring and two weeks in the fall when the weather is perfect. Crime, corrupt politics, racial tension, a terrible education system, rude people, horrible customer service, no outdoor activities, notorious for allergy problems (people who have never had allergies move here and have them), unbearably hot weather in the summer, and gloomy weather in the winter all make for a depressed existence. And worst of all... there is nowhere interesting within comfortable driving distance to get away from all of this for a weekend. Three hours driving in any direction and you are still just in the middle of a bunch of trees with the same hot (summer) or gloomy (winter) weather and nothing to do. Want to go to the beach? Forget about it... nine hour drive, minimum.

Please, Please DO NOT MOVE TO MEMPHIS, TN - 10/7/2005

I was transferred to Memphis with my job from Atlanta, GA. I have been so "incredibly" disappointed. There is absolutely nothing to do. The city has a very lazy feel to it. Many of the citizens, 9 out of every 10 people I've encountered are on Welfare or cheating the government in one way or another. There is also a rampid "group" mentality in Memphis which accounts for so many of the residents continuing to support very corrupt local politicians because they think they can't get any better. There is also high crime, terrible schools, lots of easy availibility of "hard core" drugs (I've had to warn community youngsters). The other day I was stopped at a red light and too my amazement I saw an older lady that looked like she could be someone's grandmother buying "crack". I'm not kidding. She looked straight at me and simply hunched her shoulders and walked away. Homes are dilapidated and education in Memphis is not promoted. I simply can't find not one good thing to say about Memphis. I've been here for over 8 months and am seriously seriously looking to leave. It's simply depressing.
